I've been going crazy (I know, I know -- I shouldn't make it sound like an all day trip) since spring trying to find a recording of "Our Captain Cried All Hands." The DT gave me the words, but not who recorded it. I "hear" a female voice -- and I can't locate a recording in my collection.

I recently had the opportunity to ask Joyce and Danny McLeod and Louis Killen about it. Joyce was able to sing the (Anglican?) hymn that furnished the tune (if anyone could give me more info, I'd be appreciate it) and Louis sang a few more "Blacksmith" variants, but no one seems to remember who recorded it.

It's the other way round isn't it? The tune was collected by Kate Lee(?) or Lucy Broadwood in Monksgate, Sussex and later had the workds of John Bunyan set to it.

The best recording I can think of is on Shirley and Dolly Collins'"Anthems in Eden".

Thanks for that information, Manitas, the hymn being 'To be a Pilgrim'.

I have Martin Carthy singing it, with Dave Swarbrick accompanying on fiddle.

Martin Carthy singing "To Be a Pilgrim" or "Our Captain Cried All Hands"?

Gotta check my Shirley Collins LPs.

Thanks, Wolgang, that's what I meant. That's what I get for inserting extra bits and not re-reading!

Three recordings that I know to be currently available:

Byker Hill Martin Carthy with Dave Swarbrick: Topic TSCD342
Anthems in Eden Shirley Collins Harvest CDEMS 1477
Come Let Us Buy the License - Songs of Courtship & Marriage Topic TSCD651 ("Our Captain Calls All Hands") -Pop Maynard

Shirley Collins used a tune substantially different from the familiar one that most Revival performers record.  The third is a version recorded directly from tradition.  It was Vaughan Williams, incidentally, who set "Monksgate" to the Bunyan verses.

You've all just saved my sanity! (Well, what was left of it . . .)

I just dug out (have I put this LP on tape?!) Shirley Collins' version: ;ovely, but not the tune I had in my head.

Searched Martin Carthy LPs and CDs: I don't seem to own "Landfall."

And then, yes! I do have New St. George "High Tea" -- and that is definitely the female voice I was hearing in my head. Don't know why I overlooked it in my search. (Probably because I identified the voice as Maddy Prior; who knows?)

Thank you, thank you all. Now I can go ahead and finish learning the song. (Probably to the consternation of my music mates.)

Willards Leap recorded the song on their "Adieu, John Barleycorn" in the 70's. There's a YouTube link to it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yxbk1bdd_I4

The June Tabor link with the Oyster Band is certainly well worth a listen.

This recording by 80's group, Willards Leap ,can't be bested in my opinion.

Unfortunately they only made one LP before lead singer Roy Entiknap died.

Tracks from this LP can now be heard on You Tube so please listen.

PS could someone pls make blue clicky for me - "Make a Link" seems to be broken

I learned the song from the excellent Therapy album, One Night Stand.

Whilst I still have a copy on vinyl, I have no idea if this album was released on CD at all. It summed up at the time the folk club scene for me, and I bought it at a folk club booking they had many many years ago locally...

I was going to mention "Therapy" - [ Dave and Fiona Shannon ? - from the North of Ireland ? ]. I think I still have a cassette tape recording - very rough - of a live concert version of the song from some folk programme on radio, probably in the 1970s. Absolutely superb singing and guitar playing.

There's an unaccompanied version of it by June Tabor on Andrew Cronshaw's Till The Beasts' Returning album. The credits read: JT - vocal. Everyone else - admirable restraint.

There is our "pretty rough" version here it is just a rehearsal recording, nothing special. Should get the words and tune across though.
I remember Therapy, although I have lived in Canada since 1977, a guy I worked with dated Fiona for a while, until he figured out she loved her guitar more than him. Ahhhhh! Memories.

Mrs Pavane can be heard singing it (live in a club in Dubai, 1982) at this URL:

"The Distressed Maid"

The title is taken from 19th century broadsides in which it is printed - the name "Our Captain cried ..." seems to be a modern invention.

For the sake of completeness, here's a link to the version by The Druids from the 1970 album 'Burnt Offering'. (Scroll to the bottom of the page)

Forty two years on it sounds a bit lacklustre to my ear - but it was our first album. I think we cheered up a bit later on.
