Subject: 'Our Captain Cried All Hands' Recordings From: Bat Goddess Date: 26 Oct 00 - 09:19 AM I've been going crazy (I know, I know -- I shouldn't make it sound like an all day trip) since spring trying to find a recording of "Our Captain Cried All Hands." The DT gave me the words, but not who recorded it. I "hear" a female voice -- and I can't locate a recording in my collection. I recently had the opportunity to ask Joyce and Danny McLeod and Louis Killen about it. Joyce was able to sing the (Anglican?) hymn that furnished the tune (if anyone could give me more info, I'd be appreciate it) and Louis sang a few more "Blacksmith" variants, but no one seems to remember who recorded it. The tune was collected by Kate Lee(?) or Lucy Broadwood in Monksgate, Sussex and later had the workds of John Bunyan set to it. The best recording I can think of is on Shirley and Dolly Collins'"Anthems in Eden". |

I just dug out (have I put this LP on tape?!) Shirley Collins' version: ;ovely, but not the tune I had in my head. Searched Martin Carthy LPs and CDs: I don't seem to own "Landfall." And then, yes! I do have New St. George "High Tea" -- and that is definitely the female voice I was hearing in my head. Don't know why I overlooked it in my search.
