Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Julie Ann or Julianne From: JB Date: 26 Apr 98 - 02:28 AM The New Christy Minstrels sang Julianne on one of their albums. I have seen a song-book for the album, but it's been years ago. The tune is similar to the one I've heard sung to Poor Wayfaring Stranger. Here are the words I remember to the chorus and last verse. (There's another verse that introduces a false lover and how he promised to make her rings of siver, but instead goes off a'courtin' another.) Have you seen her in the moonlight Silver rings upon her hand Now she wears a crown of sorrow And her name is Julianne The cabin door was standin' open On that wild and lonely night And the hound-dog he lay a dyin' In the gloomy fire-light They found her shattered empty rifle And the gown she used to wear But they never found poor Julie And they never found (they never found!) that hungry bear I loved the album that it was on, as a kid. My brother has searched the web for a copy, but it's out of print. I would be interested if anyone has info on where to find it. It occurs to me that you could do a parody of the above about potatoes named "julienne"

Subject: RE: Need lyrics From: MJ Date: 27 Apr 98 - 05:57 AM Thanks, JB. That's the one I was looking for. Do you happen to remember the name of the album? I've been looking for it for a long time. Thanks. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Julie Ann or Julianne From: Alice Date: 21 Jul 98 - 11:08 AM These are the lyrics I remember. I don't know the source.
JULIE ANNE
The shady side of sunny mountain
chorus
Julie's beau was tall and handsome
Out he rode across the mountain,
The cabin door was standin' open
They found a shattered empty rifle alice in montana |
Subject: RE: Wayfaring Stranger From: Philip Hudson Date: 22 Jul 98 - 04:22 PM alice in montana: I love the words for JULIE ANNE. But I must be a little dense. Where does the bear come in? Who killed who? Or are we to guess? To you who showed names of tune and word writers, I expect these were the arrangers. I believe this one goes a way back. Can anyone date it? - Philip Hudson in Texas |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Julie Ann or Julianne From: GUEST,Jennifer Busick Date: 27 Oct 00 - 11:27 PM I, too, would like to find the lyrics to Julie Ann. Here's what I know of it, from what my father used to sing to me. I know there's got to be at least one more verse.
'Twas this side of sunny mountain is the place it all began [Something's missing, here, I think]
Can't you see her in the moonlight, silver rings upon her hand?
Julie's beau was tall and handsome just a poor boy, with treasures few
Off he rode to sunny mountain ere the fields were wet with dew [Chorus]
The cabin door was standing open on that dark and windy night
They found an empty, shattered rifle and the shawl she used to wear [Chorus] If anyone could fill in the gaps (the ones I know about or the ones I don't) I'd appreciate it! Jennifer Busick^^ |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Julie Ann or Julianne From: Alice Date: 31 Oct 00 - 11:04 PM I posted the lyrics here in the past at some time. I'll search the forum and see if I can find them. You've got it pretty much there, except for
chorus:
Have you seen her in the moonlight
(same tune as Wayfarin Stranger) Alice |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Julie Ann or Julianne From: Jim Dixon Date: 13 Nov 00 - 09:02 PM The words have been posted here. and here (click). But it's not the song by Pete Goble & Leroy Drumm (JRO) |

Subject: ADD: Julie Ann^^ From: Joe Offer Date: 18 Dec 01 - 07:24 PM OK, this is what I gleaned from the threads and the recording, and what I'll submit to the Digital Tradition. Most of the transcription is from Alice, with some from Jennifer Busick. -Joe Offer- JULIE ANNE (Randy Sparks?) The shady side of sunny mountain That's the place it all began. There once lived the fairest maiden, And her name was Julie Anne. Julie's beau was tall and handsome Just a poor boy with treasures few, Still he promised rings of silver, For to prove his love was true. CHORUS Have you seen her in the moonlight, Silver rings upon her hands Now she wears a crown of sorrow, And her name was Julie Anne. Wake me early in the morning Ere the birds begin to sing I'll get silver from the mountain, And I'll fashion ye a ring. Off he rode across the mountain, When the fields were wet with dew But instead he went a ramblin' And a courtin' Jenny Lou. CHORUS The cabin door was standin' open On that wild and windy night And the hound dog he lay a dyin' In the gloomy candle light. They found a shattered empty rifle And the shawl she used to wear, But they never found Miss Julie They never found the hungry bear. CHORUS Alternate verses: He said, I am just a poor boy Gold and money have I none But I'll take silver from the mountains And I'll fashion you a ring Off he rode into the shadows When the fields were wet with dew But instead he went a-roving And he courted Jennie Lou. Have you seen her in the moonlight? Silver rings upon her hand Now she wears a crown of sorrow And her name, and her name is Julie Ann Cabin door was standing open On that dark and windy night And her hound dog lay a-dying In the lonesome firelight. Alternate titles: Julianne and Julie Ann One version was attributed to Randy Sparks of the New Christy Minstrels, but it is not known whether the song was originated by Sparks. tune: similar to Wayfaring Stranger^^ |

Subject: RE: Julie Ann song From: GUEST Date: 11 May 07 - 04:48 PM I learned the JulieAnn song back in school in southeast Colorado in the 60's. I sang it to my daughter when she was growing up and now we both sing it to her twin daughters. It originated in Pike County Ky back years ago. I found nn article on it online by Googling " and she wears a crown of sorrow " |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Julie Ann or Julianne From: GUEST,Guest Date: 03 Sep 10 - 11:08 PM As for Julianne...The answer to the questions is in the chorus line. She did him in to put it mildly. When I was a folksinger in Texas in the middle 60's this was a favorite song that we performed at colleges and high schools and the people always wanted to know the story of how and when and why..This is the best answer I can give..Hope it settles some wonderment. |

I have an old copy from when I was just a pup and got another new copy of this a few yeras ago on eBay but I have never been able to find the guitar chords for it and zowwie I was justa fishin around and landed the best fish I ever caught right here. Many thanks to oly669 for providing the chords, I really apprecaiate it and so will my guitar as soon as I put the song together. I don't know about the neighbors level of appreciation as I am a piker at the gitfiddle and hope I can learn this song before the rest of them move out. Thanks again. Don flatbushdoc@gmail.com |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Julianne (New Christy Minstrels) From: GUEST Date: 18 Mar 14 - 05:53 AM My mother sang this to me as a lullaby when I was little. She learned it from her mother, who learned from hers (etc.) from the mountains of North Carolina. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Julianne (New Christy Minstrels) From: GUEST,Brenda Date: 09 Mar 15 - 10:13 AM I heard this song from YMCA camp in the early 70's. I absolutely loved this song. I never thought I'd find ALL the words again. Thanks to all of you, I think I now have them all. For the one that asked about the bear? I think he broke into the cabin and she tried to shoot him, but he ate her. And the dog tried to stop him too, but them hungry bears are pretty strong. I don't think Julie Ann killed the boyfriend. He was just a...well, not very honorable! I would LOVE to talk to the person that penned this so long ago! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Julianne (New Christy Minstrels) From: GUEST,Tom Date: 16 Jun 17 - 04:10 PM I agree with Brenda (3-9-15)...while her beau, who lied to her, was gallivanting around doing what he shouldn't have been doing, Julie-anne was left alone. In spite of having a rifle and a dog for protection, the bear got her and the dog, leaving only her shawl and the empty rifle behind. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Julianne (New Christy Minstrels) From: Deckman Date: 16 Jun 17 - 05:04 PM My dim memory says that this song was actually written by the late Terry Wadsworth. He sang with the group for a short while. I can remember him singing it me. I also vaguely remember that he was broke and "sold" the song rights to Randy Sparks for something like $50. bob(deckman)nelson |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Julianne (New Christy Minstrels) From: GUEST,Elder Dan Date: 31 Aug 17 - 01:10 PM I grew up (in the 70s) with lots of New Christy Minstrels, my father was a huge fan and would play a lot of their songs on guitar himself, and I recently stumbled back across this one - having long forgotten it, but boy the memory ran deep when I heard it again. Now my 7yo has started grooving on it, she seems to really dig its spookiness. Hearing it again after all these years, the one new thing I feel like I've realized is, it's a ghost story. The chorus talks about her in the present tense - wearing a crown of sorrow in the moonlight, wearing the silver rings she was promised in life but never received. |
