What can a medical bloodtest show ? If you have cancer, allergies, heart-problems, diabetes ? Other things ?

depends on what they do with the blood.

Blood tests can show signs of parasite infestation, determine various genetic disorders, determine sex, disprove parentage (it cannot under normal circumstances prove parentage), and symptomology of umpty dozen plus eleventeen diseases

I'm told it can also trace substance abuse back by a year, but don't know if this is 100% true,a strand of hair can be pretty revealing too.I'm not medically trained so maybe I just believe the media

Are you wondering about something specific? If you want a list of all available tests, my advice is to check with your doctor or local laboratory. I'm sure they'll be happy to explain them.

If someone orders a blood test for you, they should tell you what they're ordering. While it's possible to test a blood sample for loads of things, a lab will only do the specific tests ordered by the doctor. In other words, if a doctor orders a blood test for cholesterol levels, you won't accidentally find out you have low irony levels.

Well stated Jeri. Everything depends on what they are looking for. Its not like looking at cell structure. The procedure and equipment vary from test to test and a lot of labs and docs use "Panels" which are groupings that can be done at the same time, but again, they are looking for a specific.

it heavily depends on what you do with the blood.
It definitely is not possible to proof paternity with normal blood tests (it is only possible to exclude paternity), paternity can only be shown with a reasonable security by doing a dna test.
It is also not possible to check for substance abuse which took place more than about a week ago (the kidneys clear out the drugs...), but in hairs many substances get builtin if they are in your blood. How far back you can proof use/abuse of a substance depends on the length of your hairs and its speed of growth (usually about 1cm (0.4inches) a month, so measure your hair to see how far back a test might reach).
It is possible to see whether you have had some infections (as the antibodies will be in your blood if you have)
It is also possible to proof your use of some substances in the near past (alcohol, drugs, ...)
For details, ask a doctor you trust.

Allergies can sometimes be determined from a blood test. Cholesterol levels. Blood oxygenation. Presence of certain by-products of drug metabolization (used as a marker for drug use). Toxic chemicals ingested or inhaled (lead in the atmosphere from car exhaust, for example). Counts of various types of blood cells (red, white, lymphocites, t-cells, etc.).
