I think you may be thinking of Larry "The Bird" Mootham, an extraordinary harmonica player/singer from Ottawa.

I am extremely sorry to say that Larry, a longtime acquaintance, died suddenly this fall of a heart attack. He was 45. A couple of weeks ago there was an all-day benefit/tribute memorial show for him at the Rainbow Bistro in Ottawa, a fundraiser for his daughter.

He recorded a CD (maybe more than one) with the guitar player he worked with the most, Vince Halfhide, which was nominated for a roots/traditional Juno award (Canadian recording industry thing).

Larry was a great guy, a natural storyteller with an ebullient personality that made him always fun to encounter.

I'll get the name of the CD and other info and post it here.

Jeez, it IS hard to find Larry on the Web. There's a bit of info and a picture on blues guitarist Paul Fenton's site.

His recordings if available should be gettable from The Ottawa Folklore Centre.

And it turns out he actually won a Juno.
