Subject: RE: Help: JIM KWESKIN & JUG BAND ALBUM From: GUEST,TOM DOWLING Date: 16 Nov 00 - 09:41 PM Thanks again for all of your contributions to the search for the Buffalo Skinners. I appreciate the clarification from Mike Billo about the "Relax Your Mind" title. That sure rings true and jars loose some big time 60's type recollections for me. Thanks also to Mike Regenstreif for the confirmation that the version I am looking for is the one on the VANGUARD Greatest Songs of Woodie Guthrie CD. I was not sure that it was the same version. The sound bites from that VANGUARD CD that are available at Amazon.com do not include a 'hit' on the Kweskin version. I was reluctant to risk the expenditure without confirmation that this is the version I was looking for. However, if that is the same version as on the Relax your Mind album, I'm game. Also, "Hat's off" to Stefan Wirtz for collecting the Kewskin stuff in one place. I have not been there you, but will visit after I finish up these 'thank yous'. Also, thanks to Fretless for the Good Coffe House referral. I think I have been there. Is it the place associated with the Ethical Culture center on Prospect Park West? Finally, may none of us end up like that guy by the name of Kriegel. ("We left old Kriegel's bones to bleach.......on the range of the buffalo.") This is a great website!! Tom D.

Subject: RE: Help: JIM KWESKIN & JUG BAND ALBUM From: GUEST,fretless Date: 16 Nov 00 - 12:54 PM Tom, Brooklyn is good; that's where I first heard/heard of Kweskin. But it's a bit far from my current location in northern Virginia for us to arrange a temporary hand transfer of my copy of the Kweskin album. It does, however, put you in fine position to enjoy the weekly music at The Good Coffeehouse in Park Slope (http://www.bsec.org/events/currentcoffee.html).

Subject: RE: Help: JIM KWESKIN & JUG BAND ALBUM From: GUEST,Mike Billo Date: 15 Nov 00 - 09:17 PM Hi Tom; The reason you may be having trouble finding Kweskin's version of "Buffalo Skinners", is that it was recorded by Kweskin in his pre-jug band days on an album titled "Relax Your Mind" on Vanguad Records. I don't believe that's been re-issued on CD, but I could be wrong. Songs from that album are often thought to be a part of the jug bands work, because of the presence of Fritz Richmond and Mel Lyman, who would later become jug ban members. |

Subject: JIM KWESKIN & JUG BAND ALBUM From: GUEST,Tom Dowling Date: 14 Nov 00 - 09:49 PM I am keenly interested in obtaining a good copy of the album called "Jug Band Music" by Jim Kweskin and the Jug Band. I have checked the more well known commercial music sites, and, while there is a greatest hits volume, which has great stuff on it, "Buffalo Skinners" isn't on it. That is the tune and the version I am most interested in. I have heard about a dozen other versions of this tune, and still like the Kweskin and Jug Band rendition the most. I would appreciate any leads or suggestions any Mudcatters might have toward obtaining a good copy of this album. Thanks, Tom D. |
