My father (Paddy Malone) wrote and sang this song many years ago. It is what in English is called a double entendre sounding like fun to young kids with a crude but funny message for those old enough to understand it.

I only came across the thread now so it is probably far to late for the original submitter.

A song not to taken seriously and to be enjoyed for its ribald nature.

BTW, the ? in his name above is a replacement for an Irish "a" which has a "/" (called a fada) over it, similar some to French letters

Meaning that I think it's a weird song, not that there is anything wrong with the translation... Oh you know what I mean.....

I don't speak Gaelic, but I think the original made more sense than the translation!!

Subject: Lyr Add: AN COCONUT (Pádraig Ua Maoileoin)
From: GUEST,Philippa

I can't stand the song myself, but for you I'll make a stab at translating it. Explication will have to come from another source.

AN COCONUT

(Pádraig Ua Maoileoin)

Do thugas abhaile mo chóconut,
Do thugas abhaile mo chóconut,
Do thugas abhaile mo chóconut,
Is chuireas isteach insa drár é.

Dee-hi-dee-hiddley-hi-de-hum [x 3] [Dí-haigh-dí...]
Is chuireas isteach insa drár é.

Tá an clúmh ag titim dem' chóconut, [x 3]
Is cad a chuirfidh ag fás é?

Tá bairnigh bhán ar mo chóconut, [x 3]
'S is gearr go dtiocfaidh miongáin air.

Tá duileasc ag fás ar mo chóconut, [x 3]
Is caithfear é ' thumadh sa tsáile.

Cad a dhéanaidh mé 'nois lem' chóconut, [x 3]
Cad a dhéanaidh mo bhean is mo ghrá geal?

Tá leigheas agam's ar do chóconut, [x 3]
Is beidh sé 'na bhromach amáireach.

Cuir DDT ar do chóconut, [x 3]
Is scoil amach ar an mbhán é.

--- THE COCONUT
(Irish language lyrics are by Pádraig Ua Maoileoin)

I brought my cocomut home
And put it in a drawer.

The down is falling from my coconut
And what will get it to grow?

There are white limpets on my coconut
And it won't be long before periwinkles grow on it.

There's seaweed growing on my coconut
It will have to be immersed in the ocean

What will I do with my coconut now?
And what will my wife and my bright love do?

I have a cure for your coconut
And it will be fine and strong tomorrow

Put DDT on your coconut
And loose it out on the lea.

Someone out there must know the song An Coconut sung in Irish by Patrick Mullen with Na Shandies. I would be very grateful if someone could provide a translation. Thanks.
