Thanks so much!! This is the first time I've tried this and it was great to get answers so fast!! I've got some of the answers to the "strange word" questions, which is a big help. I just would like to get the rest of the historical perspective eventually. I can't really buy the book Picking Sooty Blackberries before Saturday night, when the folk music group I belong to meets, but this was a great start!

If forum search is working, do a search on Ashton, as I asked those same questions when I first got the words.
However, in short,
"Peer rows" are pierrots, or clowns. I think it's a particular kind of clown, but someone from the UK would know better.
a "corky" is a practice ball in cricket, covered in cork. Let me see if I can find the earlier thread.

I saw Cockersdale in Bradford a few months ago, they were wonderfull, Jack Ashton was apparently from Morley near Leeds W, Yorkshire, he had children messmerised by his fabled or otherwise stories - he had a gift for telling fables.

I'd like to know the history behind the sometimes strange references in the song Jack Ashton, written by Keith Marsden and found on the Finest Kind CD, Heart's Delight.

What historical event(s) does this refer to? What are "Peer rows"? (that's the way it sounds on the CD) What is "bowling with a corky" ? Again, that's the way it sounds. Who is Sam Clegg?

Don't know for sure if the words above are correct!
