This is a real pretty song sung by Jean Redpath. I would love some help with the chords. Thanks a lot.

Dan is this song the Curragh of Kildare, which goes:
the winter it has passed
and the summers come at last
and the birds they are singing in the trees.
If it is I can help you Den.

There are ABCs of three tunes for it in an old thread here (Search Forum for 'Curragh'). Feed them into Henrik Norbeck's ABCMUS and it will figure out the chords for you.

Den, yes that is the song. Please help. Bruce, I don't quite know how to do what you are saying. Sounds very useful though. Thanks.

I don't have the address of Henrik Norbeck's home page, so go to fsgw.org, click on links, and scan down to his homepage and click on it. From there you'll have to click on his new address, and when you get it, just look for ABCMUS, and download it. His program doesn't recognize the standard tempo designation with Q: and L: of the tunes in the Forum, but you can probably ignore that, especialy if you just want chords. Under 'Play' in his program click on chords and you'll see them. I trust you know how to copy the Forum thread to your computer, strip off the HTML and relabel the file with an extension .ABC

Dan, I used what I believe is the common tune from Bruce's collection of three and ran it through ABCMUS for you. I made one small change by intuition as I don;t have an instrument handy. Hope this helps. Regards, John

Email me, and I'll send it to you as a MIDI file. Not everyone (me included!) takes to ABC format - I prefer 'real' music!!

ABCs of the three earliest known copies of the tune are in the tunes file (S2.HTM) for the Scarce Songs 2 file on my website. www.erols.com/olsonw

Go to www.chivalry.com and there is a version of Curragh of Kildare sung there that you can listen to. Click on the section "Cantaria" or do a search. They also have lyrics.

Bernard - I prefer midi's myself - but ABC has the advantage that it can be posted in a text message, yet still easily converted and heard. Of course if more people would learn midixt for posting to the forum, then both options would be available.

of course the simplest thing to do would be go to the entry in the DT and click on the link that plays it there.

I know the 'advantages' of ABC, but I've yet to see it do the tune, accompaniment, percussion, etc. 'Real' music...!

Some likes it, but I doesn't!! It would be a boring place if we all liked the same thing!!

This was not intended to be thread creep for ABC v MIDI - just an honest offer to provide the tune with accompaniment in a small file - about 6Kb is hardly massive! HTML emails are bigger!

Truce?!!

Accompaniment??? I thought Curragh of Kildare was an air to be sung solo and unaccompanied - anything else will detract from the singer and the words.

If you come on paltalk and ask, I can play you a Harp guitar version of the song done by John Renbourn and Robin Williamson. Yours, Aye. Dave

Nope I was just lookin' for the chords off the top of someone's head. I just didn't want to go throught the trouble of sitting down for 2 minutes figuring them out so instead I thought I'd blow that time on the internet! Sorry for starting up a big ruckuss about something that has absolutely no relevance to the wonderful song. But Bernard warned me that the nonsense would follow.

Cheers!

Subject: Chords Add: Curragh of Kildare
From: Bernard

The chords as I play 'em...

G............Em............C........Am......D
Winter it is past, and the summer's come at last
........C...............G.......C......D
And the small birds are singing in the trees
......C.................G.............C.......Am...D
Their little hearts are glad, ah, but mine is very sad
.......G............C...Am........D
For my true love is far away from me
.........C...............G.............C.......Am....D
And it's straight I will repair to the Curragh of Kildare
.........G...............C.......Am....D
For it's there I'll find tidings of my dear
Hope they line up correctly - I've found that a non-proportional font and dots seems, usually, to be most reliable (here's where I shoot myself in the foot...!).

Don't worry, 1979- it's called thread creep- and there are several possible routes here, but we've already exhausted the unaccompanied singing discussion elsewhere, Snuffy... *LOL*

Methinks, Noreen, that Snuffy was throwing my own words back at me from 'elsewhere'!! However, it could just be coincidence...

Adding 7ths, susses, etc., is a personal thing! I put them in but never write them down, as I never play it the same way twice!!

As it 'appens I usually go from D to D7 between lines to give a feeling of movement (don't want any remarks about constipation, thanx!)...

Added to that, I tend to connect C and Am with a c - b - a bass run, G to Em with g - f# - e, and C to G with c - b - a - g.

Lump that in with wobbling my fingers around on the chords, and it starts to go beyong a simple text explanation!!

Keep an eye open for my next album, as it's going to be on it...
