Six Strings North of the Border

I have spent the last two days listening to this new Borealis relase, every chance I get. This album is a treat! It is a vertibale feast for the acoustic 6 string guitar lover. There are 15 fine tracks, from 15 acoustic guitar masters - superbly recorded and presented, and our own Mudcatter Rick Fielding kicks ass with great arrangement of Hesitation Rag, a fine finger style blues number that compliments this collection beautifully. It one of my favorites on the album!

There is some variety of musical styles represented here, actually, for acoustic music connoisseurs - there is a wide variety. There are some lovely solo instrumentals in open tunings, some Celtic and Celtic style melodies, some blues/jazz tunes, and more.

Congrats to Rick and to Borelais for this great record. I hope y'all get a chance to add this CD to your collection, and I'd love to hear the thoughts form those of you who have already been listening to this fine album.

I happened to hear Jason Fowler's album with "Shi Big, Shi Mhor" (his version of the title) on it, thanks to Rick, and was thrilled to find it on this CD as well. Really first class album all round.

Yep, Jed, it is an excellent collection. I picked one up when I went to The Ark, in Ann Arbor a week or so ago to hear Rick. It is a wonderful collection with great arrangements. The licks are spectacular. Get it and enjoy it.

There's a cut on that album by J.P. Cormier that is practically dumbfounding simply with the speed of his flatpicking. Speed in itself doesn't do much for me, but J.P. plays technically cleaner and faster than anyone I've ever heard. He's not generally well known but, oh boy do the rest of the pickers know him!

One night I marvelled at his skill when he picked up a fiddle and played a slow air in Bb. Great pitch, timing and dynamics. As a fiddler/guitarist he has only one equal, and that's Mark O'connor. I think they're pretty good friends.

I saw J.P. Cormier on the East Coast music awards on CBC. He aboslutely blew me away. I plan on getting this CD. I'm sure it will lead to getting more Cormier stuff.

I think Borealis did a great job selecting a wonderful mix of styles and tunes. All the players are top notch and the recordings excellent. I have shared this album with a few friends who have all loved it!

actually I love the way the whole thing flows ... a good mix of tunes and styles. It keeps your interest by exploring different sounding tracks, building a theme, moving to a new one. And every track is excellent.

Let me put in another word for Jason Fowler. A WONDERFULLY clean player. Not as flashy as some, but a master of fingerpicking composition. See him if he comes to your town.

Met JP Cormier at last years Bramton Folk Festival, I was doing the CD sales at the time. This guy comes up and says can I put a couple of CD's here, I am playing backup guitar. I forget even who he was backing, I said sure, same rate as the rest. He left four CD's, after his "backup" set, they all disapeared immediately. Such is this guys talent. It was called "JP and Larivee", I was unhappy that I did not get one for myself. He's a really nice guy too. JohnB
