Ted (inactive) Date: 07 Dec 00 - 07:39 PM There is a lot of information in the MIDI tracks that you don't really need to play through a song, though it is important to creating a listenable midi file--Of course, many of the MIDI files that you find on the internet are done by people who are not professional musicians or arrangers, and they often have extraneous material in them-- It really pays to open the midi up in a sequencer program and strip out everything but once through each of the melodies(most tin pan alley type songs feature an AABA, I know, but in music notation, you just put a repeat after the first eight measures) and ditch all but the melody, base, and basic piano track(and even that often does just as well if it is stripped back to just chords) A band can work up a great verion of a tune from the fake sheet, which may be from 8 to 32 measures of melody with the chords written above each measure. Unless you plan to take the time to actually orchestrate (note for note) a more detailed arrangement, you shouldn't have more than this (even the piano part that is usually written out on sheet music is usually unneeded). Don't let the fact that you can fill pages up with music in that Noteworthy program lull you into thinking that you have actually accomplished something--even after you've converted a MIDI file, it takes a lot of work, and a fair understanding of music, to turn it in to a readable, playable document. |

The book is called First Time Ever, which supposedly has songs never-before published in a song book. Fakebooks have the melody line, lyrics, and chords - not a full arrangement. Rich R and I are neck-and-next in our race to keep up with Sandy Paton's songbook collection. We may surpass Sandy in about 150 years. When I visited Sandy and Caroline last month, they let me sleep in the room with all the songbooks. I couldn't believe my eyes. What a collection! I need the music to give to the band that will be backing me up in my perfomance next week. I received the fax, Joe, and this SURELY gives me a good place to start (and I really think the band can do alot with it). Thank you for taking the time to find it and send it over -- now I can "doctor it up" if nothing else works! Brendy and M.Ted, it was more than generous of you to spend so much time opening the files and working on them. There is a repeated section of a phrase that shouldn't be there in the midi, and, well... we'll see! Kat, the link you suggested is great for so many things, and though I haven't found the piece I need, I'm still looking. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Ted (inactive) Date: 06 Dec 00 - 03:25 PM Brendy, Your point is well taken--I am not really sure what she wanted, and as I look back, she really wasn't very specific on what she needed it for-- That web site was kind of interesting--I liked the pictures of his old band, and, since he was from Philly, I got a warm feeling and wanted to know more about them and where they had played--Bad thing was that I tend to do "New Window with this Link", and ended up with about four of his midi files playing at once (one, unaccountably, was playing twice) and for some reason, a couple of them wouldn't stop when I closed the pages-- |

Ted (inactive) Date: 06 Dec 00 - 10:21 AM Brendy, When I said "cleaned up" I simply meant that it needed to be trimmed down to a manageable size--When you convert it to notation, you get a big stack of papers--many pages of an eight staved score--and the melody track includes fills at the end of a number of phrases, and an intro that she is not necessarily going to want to use-- Joe's fake sheet (where did you find it, Joe?) will probably be easier for her to work with-- |

I neither took you for a 'Newbie', nor did I suspect any computer unsavvyness on your part, and Kat, I certainly wouldn't want to frighten any newcomers away "again". I downloaded the midi, opened it in Cakewalk, a trial version of which is available for download here - Click - , and it expanded into eight tracks: 2 Guitars, Piano, Bass, Drums, Sax, Strings, and FX4, without any 'cleaning up' to be done. These could be viewed as notation and printed in glorious A4. However, I sometimes do have problems with obscure requests made by people who ask that the results of our searches be E-mailed, or, in this case, faxed, to them. I find it presumptious, at best. There are tons of links there which may lead you to it. Just doing a quick search there, I found out Gloria Estevan did a remake of it in 1998. Ted (inactive) Date: 06 Dec 00 - 12:12 AM Aria, The Midi needs to be cleaned up considerably before you can turn it into playable sheet music with a notation program--I put in an hour or so on it--I thought I could maybe get something useable by just editing a bit and then converting it to notation, but there are a lot of problems with the file--the melody has to be cleaned up a lot, and there is a lot of fill that needs to be taken out--It would actually be easier to notate it from scratch-- Unless someone comes up with the sheet music somewhere, maybe you can get by if you write out a chord chart--simply take music paper and write the chords out, measure for measure, make a note on the style, and have the pianist fake it-- This is a great song, and the recording is timeless--I'll bet that there hasn't been a time in the last twenty odd years that you couldn't turn on the radio some where and here it--funny thing though is that I've never seen it in any music collections-- |
