Subject: Shanty Party in Portland, Maine
From: Naemanson
Date: 10 Dec 00 - 10:35 PM

We are organizing a Shanty Party on the 27th of December in Portland, Maine, at the China Sea Marine Trading Company on 10 Dana Street in the Old Port of the city. China Sea is a store specializing in maritime artifacts, curiosities, and salvage. You can see their web site at http://www.chinaseas.com/.

The fun starts about 4:30. You can bring your own beverages and food. I don't know what will be made available but I believe, at this time all that is available is space and plenty of singers. We will be starting off with shanties and sea songs but who knows where it will go from there. The present members of Roll & Go will be there as well as some previous members. I expect Uncle Jaque to be there as well as the owners of the shop. The owner, Stevens Bunker, used to have his shop in Baltimore and was a member of a shanty group down there.

Keep your eye on this thread for more details.

Barry, I think Portland is about an hour north of Portsmouth, but I haven't been there since I went to the Jethro Tull concert in the 80's and a car exploded in the parking garage.

Jets - gotta sing!

I'm hoping to make it.

Jeri's about right. I figure 45 minutes to an hour from Portsmouth.

I know Wednesday is a weird night to have a party but maybe in the future we can do something like this on a better night.

Jeri! You haven't been to Portland since the '80's?! Shame on you. We'll have to correct that. *BG*

Let's figure on a summer shanty party and get a goodly group gathered to raise our voices in song and lower the level on the keg.

I'm planning to be there if the weather ain't too horrid. On a work night it could be a stretch for some of us. Perhaps we could have pizza sent in?

I've advised a few correspondants of this, although I'm not sure many can come. Advised that it may not be real appropriate for little kiddoes, although that's our Host's call entirely and no doubt we could keep it reasonably "clean and sober" if that became an issue. We can stow the "salty" stuff for another night.

I may have to start brewing up a keg of 19th Century stout or larger (it's a little different from what's on tap these days) in preparation for a spring haulaway. If in summer, a bit of haying elixer may be needed to ward off solar prostration.

Seasons Blessing t' ye all, Mates!

Yer's Aye; Uncle J. Yarmouth Maine

Brett, I'm still planning on coming, unless the car needs a new engine or something. It's not looking that bad, BTW. Probably ignition system - wires or plugs. And for those of you who don't know what the blazes I'm talking about, my car started running like crap (which doesn't move too quickly) on the way to the session last night, (which was very good) and Brett came and I made him sing "Tanqueray Martini," and mostly lost my own voice, except nobody noticed except me, and this is a very long sentence.

Jets, you don't gotta sing, but you don't gotta feel like you gotta sing good to sing at all. It sounds good when people sing well, but it FEELS good when everybody just sings!

We're starting fairly early, about 4:30 or so. Therefore it will run as late as you can stay. Everyone has to work the next day so I would guess no later than 9:00 if that late.

Ah well, might as well say this publicly. Unfortunately I'll be working (I work 3:30 - midnight) so I can't make the party -- and Curmudgeon will be getting his beauty sleep as he has to be up at 5:30 a.m. the next morning. (No, we don't get to see each other from Sunday night until Thursday when he gets home from work.) Sorry we'll miss it, though. It will have to be another time.

I'm SSW - Northwood,NH. It's in between Portsmouth and Concord on Rt 4.

I generally like to drive myself because 1) I can leave whenever I want, and I don't have to work the next day, and 2) I can sing really loud. I may leave early, because I normally get lost, and I'd rather get lost while it's still light out. I'm willing to consider carpooling, but you may be a distance away that would make it unreasonable.

Spoke with Captain BUNKER Sat. night at the 3rd Maine (Civil War Reenactors) party and caroling-in-the-rain affair on Cousin's Island. He indicated that there will be a case of adult malt beverages on site, and whatever others choose to bring is optional, this being a pretty much "private party" - although the shop will be open to the public, so we want to keep it reasonably civil. He seems to concur that this may not be the best place for little kiddies, and sang me a verse of a chantey he learned from one of the "real deal" Chanteymen he has personally known and sailed with (which has probably never been written down) to illustrate that point. Cpt. Steve is a worldly and articulate deep-waterman whose stories can keep one spellbound for hours - trust me!

Kendall: If you have yet to meet Cpt. Steve, It's well worth postponing your southern migration for a day or two. You will have a lot in common, I think, and I will be most surprised if you do not become good "Shipmates" almost immediately.

For anyone making a long haul, especially if the weather gets iffy: Our quarters have a few extra beds, Daughter having moved on this year, and we are about 20 min. North of Portland. I could arrange my schedule to take the following day (Thurs) off to at least cook breakfast and keep the wood stove poppin' should any sojourners care to take refuge here. We had 25 for Thanksgiving, if that is any indication of space available - not all 25 overnight, but we could easily put up a half dozen or so... and a couple or 3 in the 27' motor-home, if we can keep the gas furnace going all night (it's been a little tempremental lately) or hardy campers come equipped with arctic sleeping-bags.. could be fun!

I'm not sure how Steve & Sharon are set up for internet access from the shop, but a PalTalk Concert hookup might be fun for Mudcat Cyber-participants. Just a thought.

If this works out well, hopefully the next one will be on a weekend.

someone mentioned a "Session"; in the Southern Maine area? When? Where? Pray tell!!

Naemanson: In reply to your recent query of Chanteys I know (sort of/partial):

John Kanakka-Nakka, Ol'Moke, Clear away the Track, Haul Away, Leave Her Johnny, Strike the Bell, Cruisin' 'Round Yarmouth, The Mermaid, The Arabella ("... Pumpkin puddin' and a bulgine pie.."), "Fiddler's Green" (Contemp.).. working on Dave the Ancient Mariner's Halifax version of "Whup Jamboree" (sure wish he could hop a heliocoptor or cutter and join us)... and can probably back you up on a few choruses of some of the other old standbys like "Rio Grande" or "General Taylor". Does anyone have any objection to my bringing a VCR camcorder and taping this for posterity? I know that some groups have a proprietory issue with that sort of thing and want to make sure averyone is comfortable with it before I even show up with it.

Look forward to this, and to meeting more 'Catters!

Blessings of the season -

Uncle J.

Well, it's official. Here is the annoucement that Charlie emailed out to everyone:

Stevens Bunker and Sharon Bondroff, owners of the China Sea Marine Trading Co. in Portland's Old Port and the Roll & Go sea songs collective cordially invite you to attend a musical get together in the back of the store on Wednesday, December 27th, from 4 pm on. There should be lots of nautical singing and jamming, as well as ample opportunity to explore the store's fascinating nautical inventory. The store is located at 10 Dana St., just off Commercial St. behind the Port Bakehouse. Refreshments welcome. Hope you can make it. For more information, email Roll & Go's Charlie Ipcar (ipbar@agate.net) or call the store at 207-773-0081.

I assume the term "Refreshments welcome." means BYOB but as you can see from Uncle Jaque's post up above there will be some stuff on site. Maybe we can take up a collection when we get together and order in pizza's. Anyone interested?

For those of you coming in from the south here are the directions to the China Sea Marine Trading Co. The actual address is 10 Dana Street, Portland. Dana street is a very short street between Commercial and Fore Street in the Old Port of Portland. Parking is haphazard but shouldn't be a problem at that time of the day and week.

I-95 North
Take the I-295 NORTH exit, exit number 6A, towards SO. PORTLAND/PORTLAND DOWNTOWN.
Take the US-1A/FRANKLIN ST exit, exit number 7.
Turn RIGHT onto FRANKLIN STREET ARTERIAL/US-1A S.
Turn RIGHT onto COMMERCIAL ST/US-1A.

Watch for the store on your right, half way up Dana Street. This will be easy. Dana Street is only about 50 yards long. You can see a picture of the store front at http://www.chinaseas.com/.

WARNING! This store is full of nautical memorabilia and clothing. It could be hazardous to your wallet!

Last I knew, you'd be coming South on Commercial St. from Franklin, the junction being near the ferry terminal. Dana would then be on your Right, just past DiMillo's on the opposite (landward) side. It's a little cobblestone street that pitches uphill from Commercial. I am planning to park, if parking is not to be found on the street (as it oft is not), at DiMillos Lot which is within easy walking distance. It might cost a buck or two depending on how long one stays, but shouldn't be all that bad. If it snows enough for Portland to declare a "snow emergency", anyone who tries to park anywhere gets towed off to the impoundment lot where the ransom is high to redeem one's ride. We hope, of course, that the weather is cooperative.

I'll be interested to hear if Kendall knows any chanteys, "real" or domesticated, that Cpt. Steve does not... or vis versa! Leave the little innocents with Granma, Moms & Daddys... or deal with the Teacher's frantic call about what little Buffy and Ryan are singing about the playground next week!

Uncle Jaque is right. And so is Kendall. Kendall lives south of Portland and probably comes in to the Old Port the other way so it would be a left for him.

Try accessng the maps in Yahoo if you want to get a visual on exactly where the place is.

For the New Hampshire contingent, you'll find parking a lot easier than Portsmouth on a Friday night.

Jets! I just figured out who you are. Bring your little accordian and some French work songs!

I wouldn't miss this for the world. I don't play an instrument but I really like to sing. Looking forward to putting faces with names and meeting fellow Mudcatters. This site has been a wonderful discovery. Thom

How about SQUID? As I recall from sojourning in the "Land of the Morning Calm" (So. Korea) some moons ago, it wasn't all that bad. "Kimchee Pizza"??? Hmmmm...

I'm nea big on anchovies, neither Mate... (*Uurrp!*) but me & the Mrs. do hope we can get some grub on board around 1800 or so. No doubt Cpt. Steve knows where the best is to be found in the area.

By the sounds o' this crew, it may be a good thing that yore Uncle J. will be under responsible adult (Spousal) supervision.

Lookin fwd to it!

dont eat calamari (squid) tastes like fishy catheters to me. There are many good restaurants in the area. However, I would be reluctant to leave the singing just to eat. Pizza, yes, pizza.

The stuff they have in Korea is dried. Dried squid, yum! (Ecccchhh!) They sell it off the back of trucks. I once saw a guy buy some from a truck and bite off a hunk like it was some weird chewing gum with tentacles. I happen to like kimchee, but dried squid is just gross. I can handle the fresh stuff, but don't like it - too much work to chew it. I couldn't really say how similar it tastes to a catheter, though. Forget the squid pizza altogether.

I happen to like anchovies on pizza, though.

I have had squid in America and octopus in Spain. I prefer the octopus if old tire rubber isn't available.

Sins, I'll be kind enough to bring a container to put the leftover balls in and [sigh] you can keep your box.

Hmmm, what should I do with the variety 12 pack of Shipyard ales that I got at the office party? Should I bring it along or leave it at home? Tough decison!

But Kendall, I also like the people who will be there tonight and I have a sharing side to my personality. Consider how willing I am to share the bourbon balls with Jeri (once I get her away from the tin).

I guess I'll bring the beer and enjoy any that are left over.

Brett, keep your hands off the balls until I get there!

We had a great time! Do I need to say anything more?

Oh all right, we had a wonderful time too.

Oh all right, I'll give a FEW more details. I was one of the first through the door and helped set up the room. It was a wonderful place to sing sea music. We were in a big open space surrounded by nautical memorabilia of all sorts. We were seated on chairs, sea chests, and an overturned skiff. When I left to get the pizza at about 5:30 there were seventeen people in the room. When I got back the crowd had swelled considerably but I never counted to see by how many.

We had a good representation by the Mudcat. Remember that this was not intended as an official Mudcat gathering. Nevertheless Jeri, Barry Finn, Kendall, Sinsull, Uncle Jaque, Thom M, Willie-o, Jets, and Bren showed up. On the other hand the Roll & Go crew (7) was there minus one plus three old members who showed up. Als we were visited by Castlebay (Fred Gosbee and Julia Lane), Chuck Romanov of Schooner Fare, and myriad others who stopped in to sing. The music ran from about 4:30 to about 10:00. Everyone had a good time and agreed we need to do it again.

Special thanks go to Stevens Bunker and Sharon Bondroff for hosting the gathering.

And Uncle Jaques didn't pull out his Smith and Wesson 29? Must have been a quiet crowd.

Seriously Naes, sounds like a fine ol' time and I'm anxious to see a few pix.

Gosh and dagnab it! All those Mudcatters and Roll & Go AND Fred and Julia!!! Reallly (3 els worth -- Elsworth? No, that's further up the coast) sorry I missed it. Was busy having a bad night at work, starting off by suddenly remembering (or, rather, not remembering) almost all the way there that I had left a heater either turned on or plugged at home so had to turn around and investigate. Made me an hour late and the night went downhill from there. For what it's worth, Jeri, I had "Fire Down Below" in my head all night!

Really wish I could have made it! (So, did the pizza have anchovies? I love sewer trout! And the squid, did you have squid? Or did you just sing "Squid Jigging Ground"?

No squid and no anchovies, but the pizza was very good. (All organic, I was told.) Nice combination of spices on the top. Would have liked two or seven more pieces.

Kendall really did have folks practically rolling on the floor with a couple songs, and he's very good at strumming along and waiting patiently until he can continue the next line.

Linn, I did Fire Down Below. Also Mollymauk. People didn't seem to know the refrains/choruses, but by the song ended, they were sure singing along with gusto. Claire was there with Fred and Julia.

Uncle Jacque was having fun. (I loved the great coat he wore.) No one discussed politics, and there were no shootings, fist fights or verbal arguments. There was no time, what with all the music.

I had a great time! Thanks to Stevens and Sharon for hosting!!! Thanks to the people who organized the event, especially to Brett (Naemanson), Chief of Pizza Operations and Mudcat Invitations.

Great report Jeri. You would have done well with the anchovies though. The other night when I was reading this, the damn thing really made me hungry and although I try to watch the sodium, I went into the pantry and cracked a can of anchovies and made a sandwich.

Sorry Uncle Jacque, but you're going to take a ribbing for awhile but I'm glad to hear you made it and had a good time too as I saw on both threads.

I'd think Kendall would be great at that as he's had much experience and his timing is undoubtedly superb.

So......Pictures?

Uncle Jaque, if you don't have access to a scanner give me a call and I'll scan your photos too.

Uncle Jacque, for those who have never met him, is a dead ringer for Hulk Hogan - a foot shorter and two hundred pounds lighter. This is Sinsull on Kendall's computer.
Barry Finn was nothing short of amazing. Kendall had me in tears with "I Don't Look Good Naked Anymore". I don't remember all the names but there was a concertina player who was wonderful and got everyone singing. And a tiny lady playing a huge base. Roll and Go kept the music moving - some lovely voices there. Fun time for all. Thanks, Brett for letting us all know about it. And thanks to the captain and his Mrs. for the hospitality and the tales.

Brett, I don't think Pene's doing the photos anymore. I don't know if anyone else is either.

On 1 Dec, I sent some pictures to Pene Azul from Barry's party, along with an e-mail asking if he was still around. The photos aren't posted and I received no reply. I don't know what's going on. That's why I started my Driveway page.

We'll work out something for the photos. The first step is to digitize them. Well, actually the first step is to develop them. The first pictures on that roll are from the sea music festival in Portsmouth. I guess I should get my ass in gear.

Catsp.49: A "Smith" Mark Twenty-Niner (Cal. .44 Magnum, for those of a more pacific disposition who may not be familiar - made somewhat infamous by "Dirty Harry"'s expert use of one in the movie by that name) is a fine, albiet rather massive piece. Alas, I do not own one - it would be a challange to discretely conceal one of those whopping irons even on my portly frame! Not to mention the fact that Smith & Wesson has fallen into disrepute with us Pro-2nd-Ammendment types due to their capitulation to the Clinton Victim-disarmament crowd's litigation blackmail scheme. Our responsive boycott seems to be having a profound effect on their British-owned bottom-line, by the way. Take that, King George!

Such .44 Mag as I am close to is an old Ruger 7 1/2" barreled single-action ("Cowboy" style) Super Blackhawk, purchaced in days of virile youth, alas long gone by. I used to hunt with it, when I hunted; have not done so for about a decade. Since I make my living with my hands as a Lanternsmith, I am reluctant to abuse them with the decidedly violent recoil which the big .44 is notorious for, and have not fired it in years.

Don't underestimate the emotional catharsis of blowing a half-gallon can of water into an explosive fountain downrange 'till you've tried it. Just remember the ear and eye protection; my occasional neglect of earmuffs or plugs in the past has no doubt contributed to my current significant hearing loss in the upper frequency ranges, which does not help any in tuning an instrument.

I started the "After Action Report" secondary thread, since I notice that after about 75 messages, our marginal PC takes a long time to download it all so I can check the last message or two. I'm hoping that those of us who've been on this a while might "jump over" and expidite things a bit.
