I've been asked to look after my next door neighbour's small personage on Christmas Eve. Having never babysat (sorry, CHILDsat) on my own before, Can I have some tips on how to keep them quiet? I have said I'll threaten her with SINGING!!!!! Or storytelling, as the case may be :-))

If you are going to sit on a child make sure the nose is clean and that no breath can escape or be inhaled once you have sat. After a few moments they stop struggling and go nice and quiet. This gives you a few nice hours before the parents and then the police arrive who will take you and give you a nice quiet Christmas dinner. Merry Christmas. Christmas Eve should be an easy one.. all you have to do is say "Santa won't come until you're asleep...." they actually want to go to bed (doesn't mean they'll sleep though!!!)

you can do the leaving carrots out for Rudolph, and cookies and milk / whisky for Santa, and hanging up the stockings......

I'm going to miss it this year... working night shift..... ah well........ but I'll be home to see mine open their presents in the morning.....

I'm leaving mine because I have to work (hospitals don't run themselves overnight)... hubby will be home though.... I'm sure there are other shift workers out there.... or maybe they want to go to a midnight service..........

given the choice I'd rather be home....

I thought the singing and story telling was a splendid idea but I don't have children so what do I know? Christmas Eve should be the one time you can actually get the little ankle biters to behave. Hospital workers, firefighters, paramedics, police... these are the people out working on Christmas Eve; maybe this is the story behind the parents of these kiddies. Single parents, especially, may not have much choice.

Thread creep: if you ever encounter any of the above on a holiday such as Christmas, please thank them and be extra gracious. I'm sure they'd rather all be home with their families. I worked Christmas Day three years in a row during my residency, and the extra appreciation made a big difference.

Shift work is it, exactly, my friends. Mr. and I have been married 27 years. "Children" are now 22 and 16. He has had exactly 3 Christmases off in those years......cops, ya know. Somebody has to be out there "protecting" us.....we now voluntarily give up Christmas Eve/Day if there are any with small children at home and if we have it Off, so that they may have what we never did......we just always worked around the shift hours.......eat, open presents, whatever, whenever.....also, please remember the Doctors, nurses, firemen, paramedics, Ambulance personell, etc. on this day....they all work.
