Subject: Kirsty McColl
From: Dave the Gnome

If anyone hadn't heard the sad news, Kirsty McColl was killed the other day in an accident. While swimming in the sea off Mexico she was struck by a motorboat.

Kirsty was, for the uninitiated, the daughter of Ewan McColl and Peggy Seeger. She had a reasonably sucessful musical career with hit singles including Ray Davis' 'Days', the classic 'There's a guy down at our chipshop swears he's Elvis' [click] and, with the Pogues, 'Fairytale of New York'. She had just finished recording a series for BBC radio 2 about Cuban music and musicians and I was looking forward to hearing it.

Her dad was born in my home town of Salford (see other thread - Lyr Req: salford town ) A number of tribute concerts to him had been performed and were planned. One realy sad co-incidence is that Salford Council had planned a free concert, by Kirsty, early next year. The invites were sent out on the day of her death.

The realy sad bit of course is that the tragedy leaves her children (2 I think) motherless.

Dave, I don't think Peggy Seeger was her mother. Ewan MacColl married her later.

Kirsty's mother was a dancer/choreographer whose surname was Newlove. I can't remember her first name.

Good Luck.

My ajolopies folks - must be the 2 days break, too much festive spirit and lack of sleep.

Now you come to mention it I did know that Peggy was not Kirsty's natural mother because it was mentioned once in a radio interview. Funnily enough though, in the same interview, (I think - memory is a funny thing isn't it!) Kirsty did go on to say she had her mum and dad (refering to Ewan and Peggy)to thank for her musical upbringing.

I'm sure it was on Radio 2 around the time Ewan passed away but again I could be wrong - I usualy am!

Kirsty will be a great loss to her two children, but as well as that I always thought that she was a lovely person unscathed by the trappings of fame, I read only recently that she had bought an old house and was very involved in landscaping the gardens etc. and she was very family orientated
