HI.... FOr some reason i can't remeber i started building elf lutes
or as you's call them bazookis of the irish type..any way i heard about the gdad tuning and got partway there with my experiments
with strings and box's and necks...and.for some reason GDGB spoke
to me
iam a singing book man with a liking for majors and minors
but i also like listining to the planet of the elves radio that
comes out of this thing beautiful easy to play runs of celtic
fiddle tune stuff betwix the bazoo soundin cords

    my question is are elves sending us messages when we play

You know, that had never occurred to me, cheese. Now all I need is a left handed mandolin player who'll lend me his mandolin, and I can amaze the company and myself as well with all kinds of chords I didn't know I knew.

If it helps (and if you already play guitar), EADG tuning - top to bottom - is the same as a guitar but upside down. Try playing upside down guitar chords to get you started. Bozouki is great for backing but - unless you got VERY big hands - be careful when playing tunes, as I know of one person who had to give up playing for a while due to RSI (repetitive strain injury) getting those big stretches. For this reason I play mandola, as you can do the stretches for tunes without injury and back tunes, too, though you don't get the depth of a bouzouki. Obviously, it's horses for courses.

Don't know about plucked strings, but with fiddle, ADAD sets up LOTS of sympathetic resonances with after tones. Can drive you crazy, but if used correctly sounds a lot like pipes. Same with EAEA.

Mandolin/banjo/fiddle tuning is a bit fussy. ADAD you get the octaves ringing out all the time, and it's great for rhythym.

And with ADAD it's easier not to get trapped into playing chords, you naturally tend to play play diads instead, and that's got a lot of advantages with many Irish tunes, because you don't nail them down into deciding whether they are being major or minor.

Or I suppose since the difference between the two tunings is only that the first course is tuned up a full step, all you'd have to do is modify your existing chords by lowering the notes on that course one full step (ie two frets).

The Mandolin Cafe website has links to various chord charts and I think you can get at it through the Mudcat links also.

GDAE is the same tuning as mandolin. You are playing your bouzouki like an octave mandolin. Any chart of mandolin chords will work. I prefer for myself GDAD but especially if you have large hands and fingers with good reach GDAE offers all kinds of possibilities.

Yes but I'm not too sure how far up the neck the mandolin chords would go. A tenor banjo book (Irish tuned to GDAE) would be better, if you can find one.

To anyone who could help,

I am trying to learn the 4 course Irish bouzouki, and doing so quite badly. It is tuned to GDAD as that is the only tuning I have chord diagrams for. As I am a bit unhappy with how GDAD sounds I was hoping some kind soul out there could could give me the chords for GDAE.

I know I could check a book (but I left it in the UK when packing) or see a music teacher but I am in the middle of nowhere currently and will be so until into the New Year so I am stuck.
