Subject: Music nr Guildford?
From: GUEST,Ben

I'm a guitarist/singer into tunes & traditional songs, and I live just west of Guildford. Problem is, I've not been able to find any clubs/sessions or folk musicians in the area, so I'm getting a little bit fed up playing in the living room. Is there anybody/anything out there?!! (If there are willing players a venue could be sorted) or email me - mbwilliams85@hotmail.com

Have you tried doing an internet search? I just had a quick look using the www.google.com search engine - I typed in +guildford +folk +music (so that it would find all three words) and there was a promising start - a few sites which looked like they might lead somewhere. My geography is not good, but Fleet should be somewhere near guildford (seems to have a GU postcode) = and if so then that would be worth a look as I've always heard of it as a good club (not been though). There seems to be a folk-dance society listed & they must know of folk-music clubs etc just by being in the same interest area - so hopefully there might be some leads if you have a go at that. There must be 'cats closer to you though - so hopefully they'll respond. I'm in Reading, so don't know the Guildford area too well, except for the truly excellent Guildford Festival which we go to each year (an amazing mix of old eighties bands, folkie stuff & techno thingies &tc which all manage to co-exist happily together for the weekend). Plenty of singing on the campsite at night too. There's a thread about locating folk clubs - have you had a look at that? I think that recommends libraries & such as a good source of info. Best of luck,

Kris

Tom: In search of the grail. You're close to New Haven etc. lots of places to play. Get yourself a copy of the New Haven Advocate. It lists lots of Open Mics etc. (If your into open mikes.) For example, tonight in Chesire there is an open mic at Pattaconk 1850 Bar & Grill and in Hamden at Playwright there is an Irish seissun. Further out in Mystic, Ct., Christine's Heart and Soul is always looking for preformers. Through these contacts, you may find other musicians. Good luck. Also, I prefer playing in the kitchen--the acoustics are much better. (Okay a smartass comment.)

If you mean Guildford in Surrey, England you could also try Dorking Folk Club which I think is still held in the Watermill pub on Wednesday evenings. Dorking is about 10 miles east of Guildford. This has always been a friendly club with a lot of local musicians. I used to run it for a few years but left England about 10 years ago. It's possible Andy Smith, who's a fine guitarist, still runs it. Another good option is Cobham Folk Club, just a short drive up the A3. I think that is on Fridays. This has always had a very high standard and good guests.

Peace,

mcmoo

Sorry...made a mistake in my last post! That should be Claygate Folk Club, not Cobham.

JRW: I live in Branford, Ct. Although, I didn't start the thread. Guest Ben spells it Guildford as opposed to Guilford so I'm thinking it is not in CT. And I agree, I prefer playing in kitchens too when I'm not in the cooks way.

Try www.folking.com and check out their club listings. Fleet Folk Club, every Tuesday, Fox & Hounds, Crookham Rd Fleet Hampshire. Anchor Folk Club, Blue Anchor, Addlestone Surrey, every Thursday night. Bracknell Club, Southill Park Arts Centre, Bracknell Surrey (you'll have to phone them for details or the AC nay have a website) Dorking Folk Club, Wednesday nights, Watermill inn, Reigate Rd, Dorking. (Yes, for all you in the States there really is a town called Dorking in England, ho, ho.) You might want to phone the Watermill or there is a number for an Andy Smith 01306 889238 who can probably advise you. Good Luck.

More for concerts than sessions etc. but . .

Also well worth trying the West End Centre in Aldershot, and the ceilidhs in Godalming.

Also - a posting to uk.music.folk is likely to turn up suggestions . .

Heavens, Guildford (area) used to be the centre of the UK Folk Universe (to mix geographical scales slightly . . )

Dear Ben,

uk.music.folk is a newsgroup and you'll need to use newsgroup reading software and connect to a new server (almost all service providers have them and can give you the server details).

All the best

mcmoo

Hi. I'm from Farnham. I think this qualifies as being just west of Guildford! There's quite a lot of music around.I see Fleet folk club has been mentioned. On Wednesday nights there is Bracknell -This is a singaround at South Hill Arts centre on the way into Bracknell from Gulidford. (I should be there tonight but I'm too tired - not used to working after the Christmas break!) This gets going around 8:30 - 9:00pm in the cellar. I'm running it next week. Anything goes but the songs tend to be traditional or sung in that manner.

Tomorrow night there is a session quite a lot of local musicians attend at the Grey Horse in Kingston on Thames. The music is mainly fiddle - English, Scandanavian and Old time, but singers are welcome. There's quite a heavy bias towards traditional songs. Most of us sing as well as play instruments and there's generally dancing as well It's all very informal. This is a once a month session on the first Thusday of the month.

Also on Thursday there's a small folk club that meets in the Windmill at Ewshot, near Farnham. (I think I've got the name of the pub correct - but there is only one pub in Ewshot) This gets going about about 9pm. Garry, who runs it is a very good all-round Bluegrass musician. The material is largely contemporary music.

Again on Thursday there is a "folk Choir" that meets between 8 and 9pm in the Quaker meeting house in Alton. This is run by Carolyn Robson and sets local traditional material arranged by Roger Watson and herself to parts for unaccompanied singing. About 20 people turn up, sing for an hour before adjourning to the 8 bells pub just down from the meeting house for a session. This starts next Thursday following the Christmas break.

In case there isn't enough to do on Thursdays, on the 3rd Thursday of each month there is a folk club that meets at the Leathern bottle near Cranleigh on the Guildford - Horsham road. The next meetings are on 18th Jan and 15th Feb - when I'm playing for guest Appalacian dancers.

I hope this is enough to be going on with!

Peiple have already mentioned South Hill Park: Martin Carthy due there on 31st Jan according to our local paper. Seems less folk on there than usual, this year, but there has ben some rebuilding work going on. Bob Shatwell is a more reliable source than I am.

Found this at www, mystical..."Late January;Guildford, Surrey;Dicing for Maids' Dole" what?? any further info?

re Burn's Night, still interested. Remeber it doesn't have to be a folk club - might be some sort of Scottish society, literary, university, etc
