Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: Alice Date: 05 Jan 02 - 06:55 PM AliUK, you can sign up as a new artist at mp3.com and get a page for free, and then it is just a matter of following the instructions on the site to upload mp3 sound files and customize the way your page looks. It probably isn't worth paying for the extra service unless you expect to get alot of traffic. Start out with the free page. There are instructions at www.mp3.com. If you run into a specific problem, one of us who has gone through the routine can probably help you. |

Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: Alice Date: 14 May 01 - 08:54 AM Hi, John, good to see you here.
I signed up with John at Celtic Ways to be my mp3.com promoter back around the time I started this thread. He is modest in not telling you more about his extensive music background and involvement with bands in Scotland and Britain, and now in the US (and worldwide, through mp3.com). John works very hard to keep the artists in Celtic Ways updated with information about all the Celtic Ways groups, their performances, new music, reviews, and strategies in getting the music we love listened to. He is a very positive force in forming connections among the Celtic Ways groups in different regions of the country, encouraging bands to get together for performances, keeping everyone informed on new developments on almost a daily basis with his email newsletter.
John has a very positive and hardworking approach to helping the world music artists that he promotes. Two of the most successful in world music at mp3.com are Celtic Ways artists, The Brobdingnadian Bards and Brendan O'Loughlin. Here is just a bit of what John has had to say about their path to being successful at reaching a very wide listening audience at mp3.com:
---
Music touches the soul so you have to find the souls your music touches, heals, excites and is a friend to. When you network these souls together you'll have an extended network of soul mates that will naturally look out for all new music you provide."
In spite of all its flaws, at this time I still find mp3.com to be the best way to reach people with my music. For me, being isolated in Montana, it is even more an important vehicle for sharing the music I love, since there are no large local populations to perform to. I recall a time back in about '97 when I posted a message here at Mudcat wishing that we could actually hear each other's voices singing. The response was that there was no way - audio files being too big (at least at that time).
Now the internet is losing many sites because they cannot be profitable enough to stay online. I'm not sure about the outcome of every tactic that mp3.com has chosen to try to remain solvent, but I have found that of all the places I've listed my music, it is still the best vehicle to get it to people whom it "touches, heals, excites and is a friend to". Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: GUEST,Celtic Ways Date: 14 May 01 - 01:00 AM Mixed feelings about MP3.com in this forum. I've been one of their top NMA promoters since Christmas and joined last September but only handle Celtic and folk music rather than the common electronica that dominates the top MP3.com spots. Like many folks I have been niggled by the recent frequent changes by the company, but I have also placed music on other sites around the net - and still find MP3.com the most responsive. Visitors are still very happy. I hand a lot of business cards out to people I talk to each week which sends new people to MP3.com each week. Several get back to me telling me they are having great fun on the site with all that new quality music. It leads me to believe that if all artists on MP3.com are active in sending new people to MP3.com it will maintain a profitable place for all artists. Regarding covering the new $20 PAS, I have been surprised by a new solution. Some of my new artists have covered their PAS not by downloads but from profits from the new "Back The Band" program. That really works! Its also shooting up the hits on my pages, which leads to more hits for the artists on the Celtic Ways roster. Every success to you all John Celtic Ways Jukebox

Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: Deni Date: 13 May 01 - 04:46 AM Hello all, I've just set up a page on mp3.com amid unrest and unease wiv der management. I hope I've done the right thing, but if not, hopefully not too much harm done. I was going to say, they're only songs, but that's not true. They may be only songs to some people but they're all the world to us!!! The band name is Mad Rush and we've got songs there about Anne Boleyn (not the one with her head underneath her arm - shame)a rousing chorus song, Soldiers of Britain, and a couple of trad tracks, a new spine-tingling arrangement of the Trees They Do Grow High and the beautiful and haunting Peninsular War song, Lisbon. Hope some of you have time for a listen. Cheers Deni |

Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: hesperis Date: 24 Apr 01 - 10:06 AM As long as the other artist is owned by the same admin, there is no problem putting your tracks up on different artist pages. But if you work with someone else to produce a song, and both want to put it up on both artists' pages, then you would have to write to coversongs@mp3.com before even uploading the track, and be prepared to fax written permission to them. Also, be prepared for them to lose the info... so keep it handy to resend it. That's as far as I know. |

Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: GUEST,willie-o Date: 22 Apr 01 - 12:19 PM hespy is dead on. I don't bother to correspond with mp3.com since I have no taste for reading propaganda. That said, I still have my mp3 page up. and have been adding some stuff from my archives. Mostly old 4-track recordings I made with my friend Becca in the late 80's, we're going to make them available as a CD soon. "Do You Love An Apple", "Lovely On THe Water" and some Archie Fisher and instrumentals. That's the latest... W-O |
Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: Alice Date: 22 Apr 01 - 11:33 AM There is an easy to use stats engine created by Allan Handelman that mp3.com artists can go to for checking downloads, complete plays and partial plays. It is easier than logging into the artist admin area at mp3.com. You can check stats using the band ID number on your calendar URL. stats engine page |
Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: hesperis Date: 22 Apr 01 - 10:37 AM I changed the url for my page, it is now www.mp3.com/chagall I am getting increasingly frustrated with mp3.com's lack of good customer service and caring, and I would recommend other bands who are starting out in the digital music world to put their music up at iuma, or musicbuilder. Maybe put up a couple of tracks on mp3.com, so that you can be featured on stations, but don't make it your main focus. They introduced a "Premium Artist Service" or PAS, where if you want to get paid per play by them, you have to first pay them $20 per month. They are still listing the "amount earned" right on the page of non-PAS artists, even though those artists are NOT earning anything from them. It is extremely misleading. I will gradually be moving my stuff elsewhere, after a succesion of responses to my letters that were full of propaganda, and did not even answer my questions or concerns... Good Luck! ~*hesperis*~ |

Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: Willie-O Date: 25 Jan 01 - 09:44 AM Jon, I'm afraid to go there! Harpgirl, my experience with using RealJuke to make MP3's for mp3.com was not successful -- it encodes them at the wrong bitrate for MP3.com which does not accept them. (they need to be set at 128 / 44 mhz / stereo.) They are working mp3's but not usable by mp3.com/ Maybe you can change those settings, I just used another mp3 encoding program that uses the mp3.com requirement settings as the default. (I use bladeenc, elegantly simple it is.) Alice, you are definitely hooked on this aren't you? Good work you're doing too. W-O p.s. now I have a different dog, going to have to train her all over again in home recording protocol. woof. |

Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: Alice Date: 21 Jan 01 - 11:23 AM LOL! Bill, my dog was jingling dog tags and clicking toenails across the hardwood floor yesterday when I started recording. He was sleeping very contentedly until I turned on the mic. I've learned to unplug the phone. Actually, the refrigerator and furnace hum doesn't seem to be detected by my microphone - or else my speakers are so bad I just can't hear the background noise!
By the way, my newest project on mp3 last night was to create a storytelling page. I'm doing children's stories I have written (mostly for toddlers) and re-telling old folk tales, with a little singing included in the stories.
You can have more than one site, just signing up as a new artist each time with a different "band name". For those of you who do comedy, poetry, stories, etc., look under the genre called Spoken Voice. You can create mp3's of your own work and read/recite work that is public domain. Alice |
Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: Willie-O Date: 21 Jan 01 - 11:08 AM Alice, before you start recording, you're supposed to turn off the furnace. Then you sing till you're done or your toes turn blue, then you turn the furnace on again... I went through this very rigorous procedure with the recording of "The long walk home" and a couple of other tunes on my site--We were using fancy digital equipment in the producer's house, in January, and it was just part of the routine to get clean tracks. Course that guy was a fanatic. Because the previous commercial recording he'd made there, in summer, windows had been open, and the recording was released complete with traffic noises. Ditto for the phone, as for the dog, well I've been there. Another time recording at my house, my old dog was being exceedingly mellow and relaxed as we were recording in an upstairs bedroom; in the middle of the song he quietly ambled upstairs, walked into the room and contentedly flopped down; quietly except for the extremely loud clattering of claws on the plywood floor. We too collapsed but in uncontrolled laughter. Wish we'd saved that take. Stay warm, |
Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: Alice Date: 20 Jan 01 - 02:54 PM Just want to say Good Job! to Clansfolk, too. At age 18, you are well on your way to developing a nice traditional band. Let me know when you have more files recorded. Don't be shy about the home-made sound, all I have is a cheap mic connected to the computer in my living room - when I record I have to deal with barking dogs, ringing phones, and the sound of the furnace starting up! |

Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: GUEST,Willie-O Date: 10 Jan 01 - 08:01 AM I'll try the mp3fix thing...my ability to stream anything from mp3.com, even at Lo-Fi, is extremely flaky. For some reason it's often the case that I can play the "artist radio" on an mp3.com artist page, but clicking on play for a particular song usually takes me straight to the mp3.com "help" page--which is no help at all, tells me my computer isn't properly equipped to play mp3's (wrong) and to download MusicMatch (which I don't want). Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: Alice Date: 09 Jan 01 - 12:56 PM Sourdough, this is the response I got from tech support when I asked them about the on/off problem you had when listening to my songs. It doesn't explain why you could hear Willie-O's song while streaming, but the information may be of help to others trying to listen at mp3.com. I also found out that artists get paid a few more pennies if the files are downloaded instead of streamed. I'm still new to the site, figuring it all out (and climbing in the charts) now being promoted by Celtic Ways, like Jenric and Celtic Dragon. Hello,
Please make sure that they are using the play quality recommended for their connection type. If they are using a 56k dial-up Internet connection or slower, it is recommended that they use 'Lo-Fi' playback.
If you are using a connection faster than 56k (ISDN, DSL, cable, etc.) and are still experiencing problems, please try 'Lo-Fi' playback. If 'Lo-Fi' playback works correctly, you may want to try changing the 'buffer' settings in the player you are attempting to use. For instructions on changing buffer settings, please contact the creator of your player.
Here's some info regarding the functionality of the playback links:
Hi Fi: This will stream (play) a 128kbps high-quality stereo MP3 file; high bandwidth (T1, T3, DSL, ISDN, "cable modem" or equivalent) required.
In addition, all Radio Play links on the MP3.com site will now stream (play) 24kbps MP3s.
If your player is not functioning properly, download and install the most recent version of your player. You can also download a file called MP3.fix (for PC users only, NOT FOR MAC USERS). You can find it at:
http://software.mp3.com/software/individual/windows/utility/2794.html
If you are unable to obtain a copy of MP3Fix and you are still unsuccessful after attempting to use MP3Fix, or are a MAC user, please visit the FAQ on setting your MIME types located here:

Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: katlaughing Date: 08 Jan 01 - 06:52 PM Alice, what a wonderful idea! Thanks for making it so! I've been frustrated at not being able to get my brother's classical works and songs on mp3. Each time I'd hear about another Mudcatter doing it, I'd get after Rog that we needed to do something. Yours was the one that did it. :-) We went out over the w/end and bought a keyboard with midi. SO, now I've got all of this classical music and songs to get into the computer, mix, etc.! What fun, though! Thanks!! Paul G. NICE TO SEE you!!! SeanM. I think you shoud have official status as the Link Fairy! You all sound wonderful!! kat |
Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: Alice Date: 08 Jan 01 - 10:01 AM mp3 support said there are some things their engineer staff are working on.
Here is an addition to the Wild Bird's Nest, the Mudcat station I put together - Celtic Dragon. There is another band on mp3 called CelticDragon, so a bit confusing in finding the one that is Mudcat related. |
Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: Alice Date: 06 Jan 01 - 08:59 PM thanks, Sourdough. I'll see if I can get an answer from mp3.com support. |
Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: Sourdough Date: 06 Jan 01 - 08:37 PM I went to listen to The Wild Bird's Nest. I discovered that All for Me Grog played fine but your (Alice's) pieces were garbled as though they were being played back in my machine without a buffer (ff-on-off-on-off-on etc). However, there had been an indication in Win Amp that the program was prebuffering on this end. It may be my problem but in case it isn't, I thought i would let you know. Other Mudcatters cans ee if they have similar problems. Sourdough |
Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: Alice Date: 06 Jan 01 - 06:26 PM Here is the Mudcat member "radio station" I created at mp3.com as a result of this thread. Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: wildlone Date: 06 Jan 01 - 04:36 PM I like browsing mp3.com and just downloading a few songs/tunes to listen to while I surf the net. thanks for the links very good all of you. Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: Alice Date: 06 Jan 01 - 12:45 PM I'm creating an mp3 "radio station" of just Mudcatters from this thread. It is called THE WILD BIRD'S NEST. Frank, when I choose CelticDragon, all it gives me is a song called "Aftershock" to add to the station, not the song titles on your page. Why aren't your songs available?
I'll post a link to the station when I'm done. Maybe we can add this to resources? It would be a way to easily listen to samples of Mudcat member works without having to go to each individual mp3 page. Alice |

Subject: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: Alice Date: 03 Jan 01 - 09:27 PM I started creating a page at mp3.com last weekend, right before the flu hit me. I was just using my little computer mic, they are unaccompanied, so no big "studio" sound from me, no back up band, just singing. It took awhile for the approval process, especially because it was a holiday, and I'm still trying to get some of the jpg art "album covers" to show up...
I know that there are Mudcat members who are on mp3.com and I would like to see them add a link to their pages in this thread. Maybe we can give each other support and also have this chance to hear each other, (especially for those of us who can't get into HearMe).
Here is a link to my page with three songs at this point in time:
Here are two people that I know are on mp3.com, and I am sure there are other Mudcat members.
Please add links to your pages. |
