Hey all,

Heard a tape a really catchy little song set to the tune of Dueling Banjos.

The song is in the filk genre, I believe, and is a debate between two bards as to who is better. They go back and forth following the melodies and counter melodies of Dueling Banjos.

Any one know the song/ where to find the lyrics?

Rob

It's probably an SCA song, I vaguely think it might be out of the Kingdom of Trimaris........there are a LOT of SCA songs/sites on the web.......

I spent hours yesterday in the SCA/filk song sites, and couldn't find it. Doesn't mean it isn't there.....LOTS of filk sites. Nothing in the Trimaris Kingdom stuff, tho. I even hit a few of the Parody Sites, like Bob Kanefsy's Songworm. Oh well.

I found a reference to it on a mailing list archive, but the actual lyrics weren't available.

How's this. filk is a collection of science fiction/fantasy/SCA parody songs. From the sound of it, this "Dueling Bards" might fit right in. Take a popular tune and re-write its lyrics (or in this case, write a complete set of them) to tell some usually humorous, often bawdy song about your science fiction/fantasy/SCA hero.

I *believe* that they started out at science fiction conventions. (Since SCA started out at a sci fi con, that would certainly make sense of where THEY got 'em.) But they're merely a specific genre of parody.

That said, there are actually a handful of songs that're generally considered filk that might well be ALSO considered good music.

BB,
NightWing

Night Wing and Sorcha,

Thanks for the help. The further I get into this the more confused I get. What's SCA? (Us thick Brits don't know nuffink!)

Mario gave you the quick answer. It is a Medieval History Living History re-enactment society that is Global in scope. How much actual educational/vs recreational content is very much due to the local group. SCA "period" is tehcnically 0-1650 AD, but we have both slightly earlier and much later personas. Very much later than 1750 doesn't fly, though. Most of the Late Personas are Italian/French Rennasciannce (hell, I can't spell that!) or Cavaliers. What else do you want to know?

Thanks again, both. I think I've got it now.

So these SCA guys go round singing pseudo-17th century songs while they troll around in doublet & hose? We've got re-enactors in Britain, but I think they try to keep everything as authentic as possible, including using real songs from the period.

Actually, Snuffy, the SCA does a little more than stroll around in period dress. At least they did back in the '80's when I was involved. They research the time, reproducing the food, weapons, clothes and armor, beverages, manners and morals (!) of the time. They like to reproduce the good bits (gentility and fun) and leave out the bad bits (senseless violence and dirt).

Filk, which is largely parody, also includes some very nice original songs based on science fiction themes. At least it did back in the old days when I was involved.

Come along Harry and Mary and Joe,
Pack up some lunches and everyone go,
Fill up the camper drive down to White Sands,
And pop the champaigne while the space shuttle lands.

There seems to be a consistency in the first two paragraphs of my post. The phrase "used to be involved" crops up with distressing regularity in my life. Maybe it's time to re-evaluate my lifestyle. But that will have to wait for later. I have a contra dance to prepare for.
