I can't stand the song myself, but for you I'll make a stab at translating it. Explication will have to come from another source.

My father (Paddy Malone) wrote and sang this song many years ago. It is what in English is called a double entendre sounding like fun to young kids with a crude but funny message for those old enough to understand it.

I only came across the thread now so it is probably far to late for the original submitter.

A song not to taken seriously and to be enjoyed for its ribald nature.

BTW, the ? in his name above is a replacement for an Irish "a" which has a "/" (called a fada) over it, similar some to French letters

Apologies for starting a new thread on this. I missed Philippa's response to the previous thread. Thanks Philippa for the words especially as you don't like the song. I suspected from the manner in which it was sung that it was of a ribald nature. Any information about Patrick Mullen?

Thanks Fluter. What you say is interesting. The version I have is sung to A Hundred Pipers and as Crazy Eddie says has an eye dee diddle ee eye dee dum chorus.

"The hair fell off my coconut, and how do you like it baldy" is sung as a chorus to an Irish polka at my local session. I don't know the name of the polka but it's a version of A Hundred Pipers. The tune is in the Johnny O'Leary tunebook under the title of The Hair fell off my Coconut. I've never heard any other words though!

Thanks Eddie thats the one. TCP was the only other word in the song that I understood. I wonder if anyone else knows the full words or where the song comes from.

I think I have heard this sing once or twice. Does it have an "Eye-de-diddle-de-eye-dee-dum" refrain?
If so, it is a very lighthearted (almost nonsene) song.
I don't remember all the words, but it tells of a man who wins a coconut at a fair, & puts it in a drawer. The hair begins to fall from the coconut. His friend suggests a remedy for this: "Put TCP on your coconut". I dont remember much more about it I'm afraid. The parallel between the coconut & a man going bald is fairly clear, if I remember correctly.

BTW TCP is an antiseptic, the sort of thing you'd put on a cut to prevent infection. Sorry I can't help further;

Third time lucky I hope ! Does anyone know this song. It is sung by Patrick Mullen with Na Shandies on a tape I have. The song is sung in Irish apart from the last line which is "How do you like it baldy?" I would welcome a translation of the words.
