Subject: no mudcat for a bit From: GUEST Date: 29 Jan 01 - 04:00 PM hi all; my new iMac is in the shop so my access will be limited for a while. feel free to turn this into a thread on the suckiness of iMacs. if anyone needs to reach me or has tried to in the last week, try me on email at amberapple@aol.com. talk to you soon, gods willing peg |
Subject: RE: no mudcat for a bit From: MMario Date: 29 Jan 01 - 04:02 PM yup - we are running about a 45 % failure rate on the ones purchased this year... |
Subject: RE: no mudcat for a bit From: Joe Offer Date: 29 Jan 01 - 04:55 PM Hmmmm. They made the first iMacs here in Sacramento, back when they had a good reputation. In the last year or so, the work has been farmed out to Southeast Asia or Korea. The person who assembled your iMac was probably paid about $1.35. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: no mudcat for a bit From: Bert Date: 29 Jan 01 - 04:57 PM I'm gonna have to disagree with Uncle Joe on this one. Apple haven't had a good reputation since they scrapped the IIE. |
Subject: RE: no mudcat for a bit From: Jeri Date: 29 Jan 01 - 05:48 PM If they made 'em in South Korea, they paid a heck of a lot more than $1.35, which is probably a good reason they were made somewhere else. If they were Korean, they'd also probably work. |
Subject: RE: no mudcat for a bit From: Peter T. Date: 29 Jan 01 - 06:09 PM I have a friend who just bought one and had trouble as well -- and I am a Mac freak -- they seem to have loose wires in the shipping and handling -- the earlier ones were more robust. I use a Powerbook 165c on the road!!!! yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: no mudcat for a bit From: Bernard Date: 29 Jan 01 - 06:15 PM Flamin' 'eck! The IIE!! I've got one upstairs somewhere in my 'Computer Museum'! AND a Tandy 1000... in fact, practically every obsolete machine with the exception of Univac... |
Subject: RE: no mudcat for a bit From: Jon Freeman Date: 29 Jan 01 - 06:24 PM Obsolete Bernard... I still have a working Vic20 and I guess the PC1512 isobsolete now. Jon |
Subject: RE: no mudcat for a bit From: Dave Wynn Date: 29 Jan 01 - 06:41 PM I have a Cray 400 but it's not half heavy on batteries. |
Subject: RE: no mudcat for a bit From: hesperis Date: 29 Jan 01 - 06:57 PM *sigh* you guys are making me feel modern! (My "old" computer is a 486 with scsi.) Have a good time in real life, peg! |
Subject: RE: no mudcat for a bit From: Lyrical Lady Date: 29 Jan 01 - 07:15 PM Suckiness is putting it very mildly....I hate my imac ... no paltalk .... no hearme...no nothin' .... it's really only good for e-mail. LL |
Subject: RE: no mudcat for a bit From: Lanfranc Date: 29 Jan 01 - 07:28 PM Sinclair ZX80, Vic20, Dragon, BBC B, IBM XT, IBM 80286 Industrial Rackmount, Compaq 8086 Luggable, Compaq 80286 Luggable, Atari 1040ST, Dell 80386, Dell 80386sx Laptop, Toshiba 80386DX laptop, Dell 80486, DEC DECMate, DEC 80486 laptop, and that's just the garage! Never owned an Apple, tho'. Why do I collect junk this way - will they ever have historical value - I doubt it. Sad, sad nerd, Lanfranc! |
Subject: RE: no mudcat for a bit From: Jon Freeman Date: 29 Jan 01 - 07:51 PM Wow that is quite a collection! I used to want a BBC B and the Dragon did attract interest me....just thinking, those days - I'm sure there was something called an Acorn Atom that I wanted to play with. Here's one... the first machine Hotpoint gave me was something called an Avitar - it used the terminal connected to the main frame and I could switch between that and this thing and load CP/M and then Wordstar (3 I think) on it... Never touched a mac though... Jon |
Subject: RE: no mudcat for a bit From: Amergin Date: 30 Jan 01 - 03:53 AM Oh, Peg....you should have gotten a PC.....yes PCs are a pain in the ass...but still fairly easy to get fix....does this mean I can spam you now?*BG* |
Subject: RE: no mudcat for a bit From: Lady McMoo Date: 30 Jan 01 - 04:01 AM Don't have any trouble with my Apple, but admittedly it's not an iMac. I have an Apple Performa 5400 (at home), a Dell Latitude laptop (work and home) and a fully working 1989/1990ish vintage Acorn Archimedes. Of these the Acorn is by far the most innovative and interesting computer and I still use it for DTP. It's a pity the power of M*******t put paid to any real success to manufacturers like Acorn who first introduced RISC chips and where software was beautifully and compactly written in machine code. mcmoo |
Subject: RE: no mudcat for a bit From: Callie Date: 30 Jan 01 - 06:52 AM My iMac is triffic (touch wood). no trouble at all and it's a joy to use. I am sad about not having PalTalk - I really miss the sessions. however, I'm extremely pleased that Bill Gates did not become wealthier as a result of my needing a computer! |
Subject: RE: no mudcat for a bit From: Jon Freeman Date: 30 Jan 01 - 07:00 AM sorry Peg to have crept so far off topic and I hope you get your mac sorted soon but I can't resist a bit of chat about computers. Mcmoo, I would have liked to had an Archimedes - I am glad you still use yours. Funny really, we all talk about Macs and PCs but maybe that machine had more potential than both. What happened to Acorn? Jon |
Subject: RE: no mudcat for a bit From: AndyG Date: 30 Jan 01 - 07:14 AM Jon, Acorn is now E14: There was indeed an Acorn Atom (1Kb memory upgradable to a stunning 4Kb), which was followed by the Acorn Electron IIRC.

Subject: RE: no mudcat for a bit From: Marymac90 Date: 31 Jan 01 - 12:08 AM I'm pretty satisfied with my iMac, too, though I do wish I'd gotten one with a Firewire port. My old Mac LC520--now THAT was only good for email and Mudcat! The iMac will go most places on the web, and when I do run into trouble, I think it's cause I'm using aol instaed of a standard browser. I can do icq with my iMac, if there's ever any chatting going on there besides the Radio Show chat. I'd like to hear from people who have a positive attitude about Apples--you can email me at Marymac90@aol.com |
