Slightly more accurate transcriptions of I Will Go have been posted here in the past; you can find them through the "Digitrad and Forum Search", which you will find on the main Forum page.  No chords, though.

Info on Clearence song 'Land Of MacLeod' Lyric posted one-and-a-half times, also original Gaelic text, Tha mo dhùil, Tha mo dhùil.

Lyr Req: The Land of MacLeod includes lyric.

They wore red coats rather than plaids because they were fighting in the army, not in any of the Jacobite revolts.  There is no reference to Clearances in the original song; Roddy MacMillan added the last verse himself to give it a new slant.

Hi, thought it was "our goods lay in the snow"as in the Corries Songbook, but I always wondered why they sang "red coat"on my shoulder rather than "plaid"(verse2) I am looking for lyrics to "The Crooked Bawbee"--desperate too, please help. Our own Willi-O does a beautiful rendition of it, which is stuck in my head, at the moment! It is on his CD at mp3, "Always Time for Anachronism." There is a Willie-O thread from late Dec. I don't know if he has the lyrics, etc. in that one or not, but they may be at his mp3 site.

If not and he doesn't come in here, I'll see about transcribing them. Also, you might send him a PM.

There doesn't seem to be a definitive answer to that, but you might like to have a look at this thread from last year:  Land Of MacLeod  where there was some useful discussion, and Philippa posted Gaelic lyrics which appear to have been the source of the (recent) English version.

I know that not all computer users can do this but I have found that downloading the database onto my own PC has actually made searching a lot easier for me and has probably already saved me time overall.

I have also found the Donkeywork search engine very effective. I just typed "I will go" in to find this song and within a few seconds (It reports 7) it came up with 55 possibilities but as you just work down a list of songs and all the words are displayed as you go through, finding the right one is still easy even with that number to go through. My only complaint with Donkeywork so far is that it doesn't provide a means of copying the text to paste in another application.

Hi- If you're looking for a phrase, surround ot with square brackets: [I will go]. Otherwise, the searcxh engine looks for any songs containing those three words, in any order, and becomes overwhelmed. This is more of a problem with common words--McLeod works just fine.

thanks big j - but theres something im not too sure about here. when you try to find something on the database, does it only recognise certain phrases for each song or any phrase from a song? for instance in this case i couldnt remember the name 'Mcleod' to put in but could remember other things like 'i will go' but still couldnt find this song. am i missing something vital here and being really stupid.... ???

anyone know the lyrics to the song whos ch. is something along the lines of

"i will go, i will go, when the fighting is over, to the land of ...... where i left to be a soldier, i will go i will go."

as far as i remember its not very long and im sure it was on the database but i can't seem to find it. its about a man who leaves his home to fight for someone elses war and when he returns his own home has been burnt to the ground and his family killed. its very sad but when sung well is amazing. id love to have the words as it has some special memories attached to it for me.

It's in the database - search on FARTING CONTEST - in this version it has a Mrs McDowd, but the version I know is set in Shitton-on-Pease and she is Mrs McLoud, a name which, somehow, seems more appropriate for this type of contest. I sing it to the tune of "Cushie Butterfield" although it has a tune on the database. I'll have a look through my stuff for MacLeod songs (real ones).

Yes, the tune is basically the same in verse and chorus. It is a clearance song. The bit about taking the King's shilling " ... a red coat on my back and a shilling in my pocket" - the "British" (i.e. English) army wore red coats and the shilling was the sign-on fee. So the guy in the song went off to fight foreign wars on behalf of the government only to return to find that same government was turning his family off the land and burning his house. Ironic, ain't it?
