I am looking to the words to a folk song: This is what I remember!

Close unto Fulbeck in Lincolnshire

Close unto Fulbeck in Lincolnshire
There lived a woman as I do here
Who being one of the devils wicked band
Laid a curse on houses, cattle and land

Shall see in ruins around them lie
The people vowed that the witch must die
And every night on their knees to loudly call
"May the Lord-jesus deliver us all"

Til there came riding a soldier bold
And he the story was quickly told
Black Jim his name and a man of noble deed
And the bayard was the name of his steed

Come out he cried oh you hell born dame
Come out he cried in the good Lords name
The cruel curse shall be taken from this land
By the broad sword that do shine in me hand

Then like a demon she did appear
Crying who dare come so boldly here
____________________
And at Bayard like a tiger she sprang

CAN ANYONE HELP ME FINISH IT?

Bayard the Steed (horse) figures greatly in the tales of Charlemange.......he was Rinaldo's horse, and of normal sized, except that his back could elongate to accomodate several riders. I sugggest that you search Charlemange, or the Chanson de Roland (Song of Roland)particularly the siege of Albracca, start here. I did not find these exact lyrics anywhere, but they could be SCA (medieval re enactors) lyrics......don't know for sure.

I used to live in Leadenham, which is next to Fulbeck.

I know the song, but not all the words (in fact, about the same as what was posted).

Just thought I'd share that.

a devils curse in the fields and meadows rang
and at byard like a tiger she sprang

the cruel claws from her fingers flashed
and byards blood on the ground was splashed

but like a winged horse he gave a mighty bound
and the old hag she was dashed to the ground

close unto fulbeck the news had spread
rejoice rejoice for the witch is dead

but gallant byard upon the green grass lay
with his life blood quickly flowing away

Close unto fulbeck in Lincolnshire
the marks of horse shoes are printed clear

and fulbeck men to this day the memory keep
- gallant byard and the tale of his leap

Isn't the title of the song 'Byard's Leap'?

Byard's Leap, Lincolnshire.

It is "Byard's Leap". Written by Bill Meek and John Conolly. Recorded on The Broadside "To Drive the Dark Away" 1975.

Thought so, Steve. There have been several songs written on the subject by fellow-Yellowbellies, but John and Bill's is by far the best-known.

"BAYARD'S LEAP" is still available on CD, as part of the double-album set *BY HUMBER'S BROWN WATER", featuring the collected songs of John Conolly and Bill Meek.

That's "BYARD'S LEAP" Decameron. (Not the song requested I don't think.)

THIS IS GREAT!
I just logged on trying to find the two lines I've been missing and found some answers.
Here's my best knowledge of the songs, including my two missing lines:

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Close unto Fulbeck in Lincolnshire
There lived a woman who, as I did hear,
Who being one of the Devil’s wicked band
Laid a curse on houses, cattle and land

And seeing ruins around them lie
The people vowed that the witch must die
And every night on their knees did loudly call
"May the Good Lord soon deliver us all"

Til there came riding a soldier bold
And soon the story was quickly told
Black Jim his name and a man of noble deed
And now Bayard was the name of his steed

“.….. .….. .….. .….. .….. .….. .….. .….. .…..?
I pray you where does this demon dwell?”
He clapped his spurs into Bayard’s gallant side,
And the great way to the witch he did ride.

“Come out, come out, oh you hell born dame
Come out!”, he cried, “in the good Lords name
The Devil’s curse shall be taken from this land
By the broad sword that do shine in me hand”

Then like a demon she did appear
Crying “Who dare come so boldly here?”
With Satan’s curses the fields and meadows rang
And at Bayard like a tiger she sprang

Her cruel claws from her fingers flashed,
And Bayard’s blood on the ground was splashed
But like a winged horse he gave a mighty bound
And the old hag she was dashed to the ground.

And so the news through all England sped,
“Rejoice, rejoice for the witch is dead!
But gallant Bayard upon the green grass lay
With his life blood quickly flashing away.

Close unto Fulbeck in Lincolnshire,
.….. .….. .….. .….. .….. .….. .….. .….. .…..?
But Christian men to this day the memory keep,
Gallant Bayard and the tale of his leap.

CAN ANYONE FINISH IT FOR US / ME?
(I heard it on a CD by a Brit names Connolly, who might have written Fiddler's Green, but was definitely from that part of the UK).

Thank you!!

”I heard it on a CD by a Brit names Connolly, who might have written Fiddler's Green, but was definitely from that part of the UK”

John Connolly, of the old fishing-town of Grimsby, North Lincolnshire, is indeed the writer of ‘Fiddler’s Green’ and co-writer of ‘Byard’s Leap’ with Bill Meek (who sadly passed away recently - RIP). John is very much a local legend, a great writer and performer, a very funny guy, and an all-round nice fella.

I seem to remember you could see the horse shoes, where the horse jumped. sort of Heckington way, wasn't it. You could buy a cup of tea there as well.
