Our local cub scout pack celebrated it's 6oth anniversary with a blue and gold dinner. The 12 dens(smaller groups of boys split by age groups) were each given a decade to theme their centerpiece(s) around. Den 2 Weblos(4th grade) had the 1950's as their decade and decided on making Catspaw 2 string dulcimers with cookie tin sound boxes for the banjo look. They had a great time making them with their dads, but hearing them tell the grown-ups who asked what a tableful of instruments had to do with the 1950's was great. They all responded as only a 10 year old can, that the 1950's were folk music. They must have been very believable because in the opinion of all the den leaders present they won the centerpice competition. Now a few words from the boys...

Dear Catspaw,
Thank you for providing instructions for our winning centerpices. Thanks a trillion.

Sincerely,
M.P.

Thank you Catspaw for showing us the secret of the dulcimer. Our den won the centerpiece contest thanks to you.

sincerely,

From
M.S.

Sorry it's long but I wanted you to see what the boys actually said.( I only transcribed, all above as hand written) And yes, the other weblos had Nifty fifties displays with 45's and sock hop themes, but this time folk rules. Next week we work on showman and I get to help them make music with them... :)

Thanks

Tinker

Careful Pat, your decency is showing. Your curmudgeon status is now revoked for an indefinate period of time.

When people ask us where the future of interest in traditional music is we have a place to show.

Good on you Pat, glad to call you a friend.

Tinker.......I'm a bit overwhelmed. This is really wonderful and I do appreciate the thnk you notes from the Den. We used to have to write that as WeBeLoS and I assume it still stands fo "We'll Be Loyal Scouts." Let me send my thanks back to you, to the Dad's, and this to the Scouts:

To Den 2 of the Pack

I am very happy that you all enjoyed the Dulcimer project and I'm even happier you were so successful at your Blue and Gold Dinner. I hope you enjoy them too because they are an authentic American instrument. The Appalachian Dulcimer, from which the Stick Dulcimer comes, is an integral instrument in American Folk Music. By the way, the person responsible for bringing the Appalachian Dulcimer to prominence in the Folk world is also a member here at the Mudcat Cafe. Her name is Jean Ritchie and was born and grew up in Viper, Kentucky. She has many books and recordings and I'm sure some are available at your local library should you want to learn more of the Dulcimer and its history.

I congratulate you also on your achievement in becoming Webelos. Its been over forty years ago when I attained my 'Arrow of Light' badge, but I'm sure you are as proud of yourselves, and your parents proud of you, NOW as I was then. I appreciate all of you taking the time to send a "Thank You" to me and I assure you it has been my pleasure to provide the information for you.

My Best Wishes In All You Do,

Catspaw...........Pat Patterson, Bremen, Ohio

Spaw, I was just talking to my sister, bet, tonight and told her about this. She was in need of an idea for a special spring thing they do every year, so I've just hunted up your instructions and sent them to her. Thanks a bunch; they sound like a lot of fun. One question, do you have any pictures of them?

This is a really neat thread.

Catspaw:

Great to see you join the ranks of Webelos leaders! It is with some sadness that I'm going to see my Den bridge to Boy Scouts at the end of March. They are all just finishing up their Arrow of Light requirements right now.

Tinker, Great Job bringing folk music to your Den! You have planted the seeds and I'm sure that they will now grow.

My WeBeLoS den never got beyond making "gee-haw whimmydiddles," Spaw! But we had a lot of fun with them thirty-five years ago, when my kids were cubs. Now, if only I'd had the stick dulcimer instructions...

Way to go, lad!! Or, as we used to say: Jolly Good Show!

Kat, I'll get some pictures on line in a couple of days. I had a bunch of cookie tins that the grand lady we bought the house from assured me were too good to throw away. She was right! They solve the sharp edge problem perfectly and they are shallow enough for the kids to still screw them on to the stick. If you use other cans with kids, a folded piece of duct tape around the cut edge can save alot of grief.

Ben came on earlier to read responses with me. He wanted to know why so many threads were about scouting. I didn't understand, til he explained that BS stands for Boy Scouts....Okay mom get your foot out of your mouth and explain this one.

Spaw, he loved you note, he wants to bring copies to all the guys at school tomorrow....Thanks again

For the record, we who were Cub Scouts in the 1950's and earlier know that WeBeLoS used to stand for Wolf. Bear, Lion, Scout - but then they dropped the rank of Lion and instituted the Arrow of Light, and had to come up with a new meaning for the acronym.

It was a bit disconcerting - in the ten years I worked as a Cub Scout leader, I never met anybody who was in Cub Scouts before I was. Sure made me feel old. Compared to me, even Catspaw is young (but Sandy Paton ain't).

Oh I dunno' Joe, as I recall, we must have been in about the same time. My Mom was a Den Mother at least two years before we moved to Columbus in 1959. The ranks are as you say (Bobcat,Wolf,Bear,Lion, WeBeLoS) and you could get a gold arrow and 3 silver arrows for Wolf, Bear, and Lion.

We had a great time in Cub Scouts. We made lots of projects including the Plaster of Paris casts of the wolf, bear, and lion heads, and painted them. Asn old friend still has his as well as a pine bough candle holder which his Mom still gets out every Christmas. So Joe, I remember to and you aren't old.......just aging.

I was sent to the principal in the 1950s, cause my father, who was black listed, had primed me to say, when the teacher asked, who wants to join the cub scouts... that my dad would not let me join facist organisations. I had to explain to Mrs. Sullivan, the principal, what a facist organisation was. However, my dad did a much better job when they called him in. Being my dear old street fighting - ex coal miner - novelest/poet da, in stead of yelling at me, as they expected he would, he gave them hell.
Godd bless him, rest in peace, da... (he is probably organising above, and arguing with Baden Powell).

BTW Joe, I too remember the WeBeLoS meaning of the ranks, but I remember the other as well, or something very similar to it because I thought even then that the rank thing made no sense, if it did it would be WoBeLiS. I may be wrong in the words I remember it meaning, but it DID have another, even back then. I would never have bought off on the Wolf-Bear-Lion-Scout thing even as a kid!

Yes, good show Spaw and Tinker! Keep these young'uns in the good music. I'm running my second den of cubs up through the ranks. I conducted the Arrow of Light ceremony for the pack a couple weeks ago. My first den crossed over into boyscouts a year ago into a troop where the boys are quite the songsters. They sing all the time at camps. Unusual for kids these days. Its been a musical troop long before I got involved. Happy me!

Hey what's with the WeBeLos?
What did you guys do to the Cub Packs !BG!
Over here in the UK they were Packs and the girl (in this case guy)in charge was known as Akela (she wolf?)helped out by Shere Khan Baloo and can't remember the others.

Spaw, those young 'uns will remember you and your dulcimer for ever and I wouldn't mind betting they spread it to their kids. You'll get your reward someday but I suspect it will be the looks on thse kids faces when you see the pics!

Thanks all, but the credit here goes to Tinker and the boys and parents.

Tinker, I'm so glad you used this project. THAT gives me plenty of "Warm-Fuzzies" by itself. When I sild them at Street Fairs, I always enjoyed the kids finding out how simple it was and in this world of the complex, a little simple, with a bit of history, goes a long way.

Thanks Tink! I appreciate you.

Also Tinker........Something else to tell your scouts that they might enjoy. In case you miss it, I know you'll find it here. In a thread started by kytrad (Jean Ritchie), here is the latest dulcimer achievement.

Subject: Dulcimer to be Kentucky State Instrument From: kytrad Date: 15-Feb-01 - 07:11 PM

Yesterday, the Kentucky State Senate voted unanimously to make the Appalachian (lap)dulcimer the KY State Instrument. Next week's House session should confirm it. I'm to get a copy of the Senate session in a day or two. Kat/Katlaughing, isn't that great news? They must have heard all those good things you've been saying about it!

Hear! Hear! From the Dulcimer Mama, Jean

How about that???

I just went to the coal mining thread and then to jeanritchie.com The boys can actually see her and the dulcimer there as well as hear Black Waters. It's not their usual muder and mayham (more subtle than boys at that age) but I bet we'll get a listen out of them.

I've got to give huge amounts of credit to a dad named Mike who when I emailed directions and said I thought it would be a great project ... figured it out and ran with it. This one is truely a community project Spaw, I think that's what made it so grand.

Well, Pat, I don't know about you but in Philadelphia in the early 60s there wasn't any limit on the number of silver arrow points you could get. My dad was Cubmaster (which is a drag, cause you can't get anything good or people will say it's favoritism) and one day he was looking through my Bear book and said, "Hey, you've done this!....and this...and this...and this..." And before I knew it I had FIVE silver arrow points below my gold arrow point under my Bear badge. Since I was even shorter then than I am now, they went down inside my pants! I remember that my dad was awarded "Akela of the Year", so that Jungle Book name was certainly used, but I don't remember any of the others. And I guess I was ahead of my time, because I never got my Lion badge. Never made Webelos, either, nor did I graduate to BS. Ah, well... Oh, and, for the record, you're all right: the W,B,L, and S in WeBeLoS did stand for Wolf, Bear, Lion, Scout, AND the name was a contraction of We'll Be Loyal Scouts. The Bobcat rank was kind of a gimme: you got a little brass Bobcat pin when you joined the Cubs, and you were supposed to put it on upside down, and turn it over when you did a good deed.

I promise to do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
To be square
And to obey the Law of the Pack.

Aloha,
Mark

Amazing how much we remember sometimes isn't it? I recall the Bobcat thing quite well and like you Mark, I was at a "disadvantage" because my Mom was the Den Mother. I gotta' say though that she really never made me feel that way and I got to practice some of the project things. My Dad was always stuck with the grunt stuff but he always enjoyed it. He spent hours cutting those pine log candle holders as I recall. What a thread.
