Help: Can anyone recommend Inn/hotel in Whitb

I'm planning to go to the traditional music festival in Whitby this August. It will be my first time in England, and I'm wondering if any of you UK Mudcatters can recommend an inn or reasonably priced hotel that's within easy reach of the festival site. Hope to meet up with any Mudcatters going there, as well. Any particular pub where Whitby-going Mudcatters meet? I'll be sure to badger Badger for a badge. Thanks very much for any suggestions! Can't wait for this trip. I hear great things about this festival.

Being a seaside holday resort there are loads and loads and loads of hotels/guest houses. Depends what you want. If you are on your own you can get a good B&B for around 20UKP per person per night. Some hotels go up to 70UKP or more but you won't get much more for your money!

If you are with family or in a group I can recommend the Bagdale Lodge. Around 40 quid per room but you can get rooms that sleep up to 4. Don't book in at the Hall itself though by mistake - very nice and all that but one of the expensive ones!

Generaly speaking East/Old side, very pretty, rambling, ancient sort of place. West cliff/new side bigger, newer (but still old!), more accomodation, nearer to the main hall (The Spa). It's all near the festival venues but I hope you are fit and used to climbing hills!

There are any number of on-line guides BTW. I use the Whitby On-Line one (can't remember the URL). Use a sercher to get details.

Meet in the Elsinore, Plough, Little Angel or Tap and Spile if I remember rightly. I'm sure you will get loads more details from the Yorkshire 'catters as well - they are a reasonably friendly lot even if from the wrong side of the pennines...;-)

If you are here for a while after the festival try the other coast - Fylde festival at Fleetwood is on during the First weekend in September. Only 4 days but has the advantage of being in Lancashire.... Enjoy yourself anyway.

There is a problem with Whitby this year, There are two main events which take place in Whitby every year which take up most of the accomodation and pubs. The Folk Festival and the Whitby Regatta. The Folk week always ends on the weekend before Bank Holiday Monday which is the last Monday in July. This year , because of the state of the tides, the regatta is on the same week. Accomodation will therefore be very hard to find and I would suggest you book early. The festival does have camp sites organised where you can usually find space.
As to staying near the festival site, the festival does not have a site in the way you have a site at Old Songs in the US, there are venues for concerts and workshops but dancing is in the town streets and there ia a very large fringe in almost all of the pubs.

I think that Bill means last weekend in August.

Many regulars at Whitby book holiday cottages. These are in serious short supply - you can only take over someone else's regular booking if it's left to you in their will!Don't let me put you off, though. Whitby Folk Week (or Wetby Soak Week - the weather isn't always brilliant) is one of the premier festivals in the country, hundreds and hundreds of events and the best fringe in the country (world?).

For inn-type accommodation you could try the White Horse and Griffen or The Endeavour (run by our friends John and Rosie - more folkies from Hull).

Might I also mention Sea Fever - Hull's International Shanty Festival (17-19 August). Although this is in my home town (and paid for by my employer) it is probably the best shanty festival in the country. Let me know if you want more details. And if you tell us what you want out of Whitby, you can rest assured that the Yorkshire 'Catters (from recent evidence the highest concentration of 'Catters in the known universe) will rally round with recommendations.

Tourist Information are usually a good source. I will find the number and let you have it. It is our intention this year to set up a mudcat tavern in one of the pubs where anyone can drop in to sing play or just meet with other mudcatters. We may also be having another mudcat barbeque at our cottage this year which went well last year.

The Bramblewick Guesthouse Havelock Place Whitby is a great place to stay and found on the whitby website -but be warned if you haven't booked by March then you've no hope!!! I think we will be camping this year because we have not been able to secure accomodation.

There's a youth hostel up the top of the stairs up the cliff, and you don't need to be young to use Youth Hostels. You just need to be reasonably fit to get up those stairs.

We'll be there as usual - I think this will be our 26th Whitby festival. We used to camp, but now we stay in the holiday cottages at Captain Cooks Haven, by the old viaduct. My daughters, aged 16 and nearly 15, say i've got to add that they've never missed a Whitby!

Any one traveling on the Friday before Whitby can drop off at the JUG, Chapel Haddlesey where we will have a pre Whitby Music Session. Last year there were no less than 26 catters attended. Camping available at the JUG
