Halloo, m'darlin' Mudcateers, Sorry I've been away so long. As some of you know, my mother has been ill and my life has been hectic for other reasons as well. I didn't mean to be unfaithful to y'all, but, well, life has this way of happening ...

I am moving to Oklahoma for a while so I can live with my Mom and be back in the thick of things with my extended family there. I don't know how long I'll be there, but I'm considering it a temporary long-term move.

I don't know anyone back there now except my family and would love to hook up with any Mudcateers in the area. Please let me know by personal message who you are and how we can connect. I know there are a couple of regular gatherings in OKC, and I'd like details, if'n' you know 'em.

I'm writing this on Saturday 2.17.01 and am leaving in just a few minutes to drive back there, so I'll be incommunicado for a couple of days, but will check in when I get to OKC and get my laptop connected.

Meanwhile, thank you for your friendship and for your loving thoughts for me and my family, especially for my spirited, brilliant mommy.

Love and rockets, WyoWoman

Hi, Saddle Pals, Got here safe and sound last night at ten-ish. (Ten-ish anyone?) Very, very tired of looking at the backsides of tractor/trailer rigs (lorries to you UK-Cateers). Mom is napping now and seems to be doing ... ok. She's just so great -- strong, mentally acute, pissy -- that it's a shock to see her even a bit diminished. But ... that's the way it plays out for us human beans. Her blood pressure is sky high and they don't seem to be able to get it down. She takes medication and it lowers a bit, but it's still wa-a-ay up there, which is deeply troublesome. The meds seem to make her pretty droopy, which is better than red-lining on the B.P., but it just generally sucks all the way 'round. It's so awful not to be able to get comfortable, not to be able to feel really well no matter what you do ... And for me, it's frustrating because there's nothing I can do to really help her, except to be here, which I don't underestimate. She is down to about 100 lbs, which is very slight for her, and my sister Donna said she was very much looking forward to having me here because she knows I'm such a good cook. So at least I do have one mission: Fatten Up My Little Mommy. THAT, I can handle.

thanks for your friendship and for the lifeline. Something tells me I'll be spending a lot more time on the 'Cat now, since I'm, um, activity-challenged here in OKC, and can't really go anywhere because we don't want her to be alone at all right now.

Love and rockets, ww

WW,

Have PM'd Joe Offer to check this thread. If anyone can help...t'ain't me, unfortunately.

Glad to have you down this way; wish it were under happier circumstances.

I moved my own mum in with me a year after me da died. I figured that, God willing, it would come to that anyway, so I'd better do it while she was fit enough to stand the move. She's 85 now, and still awfully active, but I do spend a more time every year running her to various doctors for ailments. I'm so sorry your mum is having serious problems, and I hope having you with her will relieve the stress of being sick and elderly and alone in the house.

Suggestion, since you're there: Get a tape recorder and start her talking about her life. Stories of how she coped with the Great Depression, WWII -- who she saw or met 'mongst the famous and infamous of her lifetime. Where she was when the news of Pearl Harbor was announced. Not only is it good for the spirit for her; it's good for you, too -- and some day future generations of your family will be able to know her and her perception of a lifetime of events.

Am in Amarillo -- a mere half day's drive for we Southwestern Plains folk. We must meet and play a few songs while you're down here. PM me when you get into your Personal Files again, and we'll work on it, if you like.

Oklahoma is the Cultural Center of the Universe, and I love coming over there. It even has lumpy scenery!

Sarah

WW, glad to hear you made it okay and to hear more of your mom. Listen, honey, that is what happened to me last June through January...high BP wouldn't come down for anything. They still do not know what caused it (I think I just got too excited about seeing Bill and Allan on their Mudcat Adventure!**BG**) but we did eventually prevail with different drug combos.

Great idea, Sarah, about the taping and if you get a digital one like Allan had, WW, the sound quality is so good and storage so easy.

You've got a healing way about you, WW. I am sure you learned this from both your parents and it will stand you in good stead now.

Try resetting your cookie (in the Quick Link) and see if that doesn't do the trick for your PM's and posting.

Greetigs, fowlkies, My cookie is reset, I am PM-able,and my Mom is doing much better. They have decided that she had a stroke, then a major seizure as a result of the stroke. But she's getting better every day, and I'm fattening her up quite nicely, which is the mission my sisters gave me when I arrived. The trouble is, I'm fattening myself up as well! I can resist anything but temptation.

Sarah, I actually will be driving back through Amarillo the first week in March and maybe could arrange a stop-over or at least a cup of coffee before I head on to Colorado. PM me and we'll see if our schedules might coincide.

Thanks, all, for your good thoughts and messages of encouragement and cheer.

Hi Pansy,

I used to be from OKC. Few years ago moved to OR. (Too wet) Now, am living in Austin, TX.

Interestingly enough, I was born in Casper, WY so that is why the thread caught my eye.

When I was there, pickings were pretty lean---but if you're tenacious, you can always find like minded people. Here are a couple of hints I can offer.

Also, on the NPR station KCSC out of the University of Central OK in Edmond (90.5 or thereabouts FM) there were folk and Celtic programs on Saturday evenings at 7 or so. If I remember correctly they listed calendars of events.

At the time I lived there, there were not a lot of folk venues, save for Borders, B&N, etc.

Oklahoma Traditional Music Association used to meet at the OKC Fairgrounds once or twice a month Saturday nights. You might call the scheduling office to see what they can come up with.

There's also a Scottish group in the OKC area that puts on a Games in Midwest City---I am thinking the 20th or March, usually. Try the MWC chamber of Commerce or the Library.

Good luck, Pansy. Light and love to your Mom.

I still have friends in OKC, so if you need information or assistance with anything, please send me an email and I will be glad to check around for you.

Take care!

KCSC (90.1 FM) has "Different Roads" on Saturdays at 7PM, followed by "Celtic Connections" at 8PM. If you miss Celtic Connections at 8, you can tune in to KROU/KGOU (105.5/106.3 FM) at 11PM on Saturday.

The Stillwater station, KOSU 91.7 FM, formerly had "Thistle and Shamrock", but their current program schedule doesn't seem to list it.

The OCTMA meets on Saturday, March 3, 2001 starting at 6PM.

Hi WyoWoman,
I figure the best medicine your mom is getting right now is your presents. I do hope things go well and that you also find some support around the area for yourself too.
Take care kiddo,

Bonnie

Welcome back to Oklahoma. I hope that whatever troubles you have here will be balanced by joys.
