Subject: Lyr Add: FILTHY McNASTY (from Eddie Jefferson)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 12 Mar 11 - 03:48 PM

Thanks, D-Rock, for giving us a good start. I listened to the same video, and I hear a few words differently:

FILTHY McNASTY
By Horace Silver
As sung by Eddie Jefferson

He hangs out in bars.
He's got a few scars.
He's higher than Mars,
And makes love in cars.
His wig isn't neat.
Of course he's a cheat.
He drinks sneaky pete,
And don't eat no meat,
And all the time you hear the women really callin' his name:
Filthy McNasty.

He don't own a suit,
A nero or zoot.
He never have loot
Except in his boot.
His body is lean.
His feet aren't clean.
His mouth is real mean
When he's on the scene,
But all the time you hear the women really yellin' his name:
Filthy McNasty.

[Instrumental break]

Why all the crazy chicks love McNasty
I never ever could understand,
But he's the center of every party.
He never gives another guy a chance.
Before you know it he done copped your chick and took her clean away from you, boy.

I don't call him hip.
He's sort of a flip.
One leg is a crip.
His mind's on a trip.
He don't have a pad.
He didn't know his dad.
His temper is bad,
So don't get him mad,
But all the time you hear the women really hollerin' his name:
Filthy McNasty.

He once got his kicks
By puttin' on hicks
A square kinda chicks
Was wise to his licks.
But those days are gone.
He carries right on
With his line of con.
He's still a Don Juan,
And all the time you hear the women really screamin' his name:
Filthy McNasty.

He's gained lots of fame.
McNasty's his name.

Filthy Mcnasty
by Horace Silver
Lyrics by Eddie Jefferson

He hangs out in bars.
He's got a few scars.
He's higher than Mars,
And mixed up in cars.
His wig isn't neat
Of course he's a cheat.
He drinks sneaky pete,
And don't eat no meat,
And all the time you hear the women really callin' his name:
Filthy McNasty.

He don't own a suit,
A nero or zoot.
He never have loot
Except in his boot.
His body is lean.
His feet aren't clean.
His mouth is real mean
When he's on the scene,
But all the time you hear the women really yellin' his name:
   Filthy McNasty.

----

Well the crazy chicks love McNasty
I never ever could understand
But he's the center of every party
He never gives another guy a chance
Before you know it he dun got to shift and take the pain away from people

I don't call him hip
He's sort of a flip
My leg is a crip
His mind's on a trip
He don't have a pad
He didn't know his dad
His comfort is bad
So don't make him mad
But all the time you hear the women really hollerin' his name:
Filthy McNasty

He first got his kicks
By putting on hicks
To square kinda chicks
Was wise to his licks
But those days are gone
He carries that on
But his line of con
You steal a Don Juan
But all the time you hear the women really screamin' his name:
Filthy McNasty

He's gained lots of fame

McNasty's his name

YouTube has:

The Horace Silver Quintet performing the original jazz instrumental version of FILTHY McNASTY.

Dee Dee Bridgewater performing a vocal version.

Several more versions by lesser-known performers. Several are quite good musically, but I never found a vocal version that was clear enough to transcribe without great difficulty.

I know this doesn't respond to the question, but FWIW, Filthy McNasty was the name of a character in the W.C. Fields movie, The Bank Dick. According to the Wikipedia article on Fields:

" 'Filthy McNasty,' the villainous bank robber from The Bank Dick, inspired jazz pianist Horace Silver's composition of the same name, introduced on his 1961 Blue Note LP Doin' the Thing: The Horace Silver Quintet at the Village Gate. According to Silver (quoted by Herb Wong in the liner notes for The Best of Horace Silver) the classic Fields film was playing on television while Silver was inspired to compose the tune."

Google gives "about 2,440" hits on "Filthy McNasty." Whatever its origin, it is a term that has entered our folklore in many quarters.

The jazz tune "Filthy McNasty" was written by Horace Silver and recorded as an instrumental by The Horace Silver Quintet in 1961 on the album "Doin' the Thing (At the Village Gate)." That album is still available as Blue Note CD #84076, 1990. Lyrics were written by Ira (?) Gitler, and vocal versions were recorded by Eddie Jefferson, Bobbi Sherron, and Dee Dee Bridgewater.

I was able to transcribe the following lyrics from a sound sample of Eddie Jefferson's version at CDNOW.

He hangs out in bars.
He's got a few scars.
He's higher than Mars,
And mixed up in cars.
[Couldn't understand this line]
Of course he's a cheat.
He drinks sneaky pete,
And don't eat no meat,
And all the time you hear the women really callin' his name: Filthy McNasty.

He don't own a suit,
A nero or zoot.
He never have loot
Except in his boot.
His body is lean.
His feet aren't clean.
His mouth is real mean
When he's on the scene,
But all the time you hear the women really yellin' his name: Filthy McNasty.
