Help: Tips on Yodling

Can any one lead me to a good source for
learning how to yodle. I do an
OK job going betwen my normal voice
and falsetto but cvannot cary in on long.
Any sugestions on techniques or who to listen to
and mimic would be a great help.

Cathy Fink has a great recording on how to yodel. Otherwise go slow and don't hurt yourself. Not as hard as giving up smoking, harder than mowing the lawn.

Well, all I can say is, Practice practice practice! And I agree with Don, don't hurt yourself! There's a fella named David Bradley who has a video about learning to yodel, which I thought was pretty good. But I had to teach myself and it was a challenge finding stuff I culd sing along with 'cause there ain't many women out there who yodel. But I succeeded, and I know you can too. :-)

Bill Staines used to do a yodeling workshop. If he's coming to your area sometime soon contact the venue and see if they can request that Bill do his workshop as well. He writes out the yodelling syllables phonetically and leads the group through starting slow, then picking up the pace to near full steam.

I have always said that yodelling is God's gift to people with bad voices... (No flames please - it's a joke!) But seriously, I have talked to classically trained vocalists who shun yodelling like the PLAGUE! You are deliberately forcing a "crack" in your voice. The way to find it is to start with a low note and modulate it slowly upwards to the point that you can't go any higher without going into falsetto. Where that occurs, "crack" up into the falsetto, and there is your yodel! Practice going back and forth over that point so that you can do it at will.

Next step is to find those phonetic spellings... Here's an attempt at one, but it won't be much good without a melody...

Umm, Trapper Al, I'm a trained vocalist, got my BA in vocal music performance, and I yodel. Just goes to show you that there's an exception for every rule.

David Bradley's yodeling video is good. He is a fine singer and an exceptional yodeler. Among current lady yodelers are Janet McBride, who taught the Rimes girl, Devon Dawson of the Texas Trail Hands, Liz Masterson, Jill Jones, and Locke Hamilton.

Actually, I just saw a program on the telly with the Riders in The Sky and several famous old singing cowboys. It was all about yodeling. There is a very distinct little thing you do with your throat that creates the yodel. anyone see this show?

Hey thanks for all your suggestions!

Ive got the point were my voice cracks down
I drive a half hour to work each day and
practice in utter privacy(I think). The phonetics
are great Al. The funny thing is I work for a swiss
owned company but I got intersted in yodling for
country songs. I have always joked that all employees
should be required to yodle. The problem is speed but im sure that will come. Al, I think the tag you
are looking for is the line break tag. this is BR
set inside the more than less than signs. < > they
stand on their own with no closing tag.

Janet could have taught the Rimes girl much more, but she apparently was only interested in enough to get through "I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart". I have encountered several young girl singer-yodelers and asked where they learned to yodel. I suspected Ms Rimes before they answered. I suggested a few others they should listen to if they were serious about learning to yodel.

Suzy Boggus is another excellent yodeler. Perhaps as ggod as they get.

I founf that when I learned to yodel I would pick a vowel and sing it in a comfortable key. For me the key is "D". I'd then sing the vowel "A" and try to move it up the register in to instant falsetto where the became an "E" sound while stayinging in the key I was singing in.. Then I'd do the same with "O" to wher "O" becomes. "OOO" Then I'd go back to "A" and try to slide between "A" and "E" sounds as often and as easily as I could in one breath. Obtaining the "E" sound is the easiest to start with and can be done off of any consonant or word that has the "E" sound or "A" sound in it. The fellow who helped me along said get a Slim Whitman record and play it as slow as you can to hear what he is doing. Drag your thumb on the turn table if you don't have a deck that gets down to 16 rpms.
