Subject: My Friend Tracie Needs Session in NYC From: JedMarum Date: 09 Mar 01 - 11:44 AM I have a friend name Tracie who will be trekking to NYC from Dallas for the first two weeks of April. She is a talented young singer-songwriter who would love to hook up with a few good sessions while she's there. I know she may have a gig or two, and don't know the details of her schedule, but I told her that the NYC area Mudcatters would be able to offer her advice about where to go for some good music sessions. I would describe Tracie's style as modern acoustic, folk influenced. She's a talented writer/performer - with style and humor. Please help her with some thoughts on sessions. Thanks! |

Subject: RE: My Friend Tracie Needs Session in NYC From: catspaw49 Date: 09 Mar 01 - 12:37 PM Have to be nice huh? Well nuts....................... And here I was gonna' ask what kind of sessions she was looking for. Seeing as how she's young and all, I thought maybe I could fly to NYC and give her a few "sessions" myself. But since you are saying we have to be nice, I won't say anything. Spaw |

Subject: RE: My Friend Tracie Needs Session in NYC From: catspaw49 Date: 09 Mar 01 - 02:44 PM Jed, I don't know where Larry "The Plug-O-Matic" Otway is at the moment, maybe Sinsull does, but if Tracie is there during a performance by Sorcha Dorcha, she needs to try and make it. I got the CD and I tell you it is fantastic! As a songwriter, she should be interested just on the basis of the "Ballad of Amadou Diallo" alone! I need to start a thread praising the bejesus out of this CD and Sinsull really enjoyed the live performance. Maybe Larry will see this, but if not either Sinsull or a PM might help. Spaw |

Subject: RE: My Friend Tracie Needs Session in NYC From: SINSULL Date: 09 Mar 01 - 04:26 PM Spaw - I was thinking the same thing. But you know how shy Larry is about advertising his own performances... |
|
Subject: RE: My Friend Tracie Needs Session in NYC From: JedMarum Date: 09 Mar 01 - 04:54 PM I hope we can get Larry responding to this thread. She won't be goin up to NYC before April, so hopefully there's time. It may be that she'd enjoy catching Sorcha Dorcha, and saying hello to Larry! Thanks for the tip. |

Subject: RE: My Friend Tracie Needs Session in NYC From: JedMarum Date: 09 Mar 01 - 04:55 PM ... and where do we get the Sorcha Dorcha CD? I'd love to get one myself. Larry? |

Subject: RE: My Friend Tracie Needs Session in NYC From: JedMarum Date: 13 Mar 01 - 11:20 AM Yeah, Tracie! Welcome to Mudcat. If you look at the message from SINSULL above, the site www.folkmusicny.org seems to be a good place to look. I'lll send a PM to our NYC favorite Mudcatter, Larry and see if he can look in to this therad and make a suggestion or two. I'm a bit surprised we haven't seen more, to tell you the truth. You'll find lottsa great music here, in the DigiTrad Lyrics Search, and lottsa good help from the folks among the threads. Careful, though - the political discussions get a bit steamy, at times, especially since our Gov landed in the White House! ;-) |

Subject: RE: My Friend Tracie Needs Session in NYC From: Sorcha Date: 13 Mar 01 - 01:29 PM OK, Jed, now I understand the confusion. InObu/Larry/Lorcan is Sorcha Dorcha, a NYC based band. I am just Sorcha, not a band and I am in Wyoming, so I don't have a lot of suggestions for sessions in NY....sorry, bud. Kinda funny, tho. |
|
Subject: RE: My Friend Tracie Needs Session in NYC From: JedMarum Date: 13 Mar 01 - 05:27 PM LOL - Sorcha, yes, it is obvious how I made the error, and PM'd the wrong name! Sorry about that. I found InOBU and sent him a PM after I got your message and realized my mistake. So, Sorcha, ya know any good sessions in Wyoming? ;-) |

In September for 3rd Sunday we play the Annual Nursing Home Family Picnic, and in the summer we don't have regular sessions because we gig so much. We do have all day pickin'with dinner on the ground a lot in the summer, tho. |

Subject: RE: My Friend Tracie Needs Session in NYC From: GUEST,songfaerie Date: 26 Mar 01 - 01:53 AM Hi. I'm new to the Mudcat, but I might be able to offer a little help. There are great Irish sesiuins in NYC--populated by nice people who *might* let you join in. Try Swifts on 4th & Lafayette Tuesday nights at 9:30 or Paddy Reilly's on Thursdays at around 10 There are also sesiuins at Mona's, Kate Kearney's, the 11th street bar (11th & B) Good luck & enjoy your trip to the city! |

Subject: RE: My Friend Tracie Needs Session in NYC From: Suffet Date: 26 Mar 01 - 05:02 PM Jed & Tracie. Some suggestions: 1. Get a copy of the New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club monthly newsletter. In addition to listing club events, it lists almost everything else that's happening in and around New York City (including Long Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, etc.). You can get a free copy by contacting the membership chairperson: Anne Price 80 Knolls Crescent #2M Bronx, NY 10463 Phone: (718) 543-4971 E-mail: Aeprice@aol.com 2. Check out the Pinewoods website: http://www.folkmusicny.org 3. Call Folk-Fone: (212)563-4099 All three sources will give you leads on clubs, pubs, jam sessions, open mikes, song circles, etc. There is really so much happening in the New York metro area that the problem is usually deciding what not to do! One important thing to keep in mind: New York City is not Manhattan alone. Maybe that's how the ultra hip trendoids see it, but there's plenty going on in the outer boroughs of the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. And don't pooh-pooh the burbs, either. Best of luck. --- Steve |

Subject: RE: My Friend Tracie Needs Session in NYC From: KAS Date: 27 Mar 01 - 12:49 AM Hi Tracie, I recommend particularly the Traditional Music Open Mike & Folk Music Jam on Wednesday, 25 April, 7:00pm. I haven't been in a while, but the venue has just changed, and it's now nicely centrally located, and I'm going to try to make April's session. It is a super-friendly, welcoming, mellow yet enthusiastic crowd. Always a few nice surprises. It's got both open mic and jam session components in one evening, and the new venue hosts a lot of singer-songwriter performances, so it's a good place to connect with a mix of those folks and trad artists, and pick their brains. From the Pinewoods FMSNY site: "Third Wednesday of each month (except this month!) is an open mike and jam circle night for traditional music. The Lounge / TRIAD Theater, 158 W 72nd Street (between Broadway and Columbus). Sessions run from 7:00 to 10:00 pm and will begin promptly. Admission is $5 at the door and they serve drinks but there is no minimum. The new space includes a real stage, a sound system, wait-staff, and a real bartender. info: 212-721-9382." And then of course, there's the TNT concert in Brooklyn, April 6! Cheers, Ken Schatz
