Subject: Lyrics Req: Squaws Along The Yukon From: John in Brisbane Date: 27 Oct 97 - 10:11 PM Probably not a politically correct song, but in true folk tradition this was sung by a late friend in Oz who learned it from the Berringer family in Billings Montana. I believe that Ted is an accomplished guitar/mandolin maker I know the tune but not the words, and would appreciate some history. Suspect it was current in WWII. Chorus goes something like..."Uma luma looshka, which means that I love you, If you'll be my baby I'll uma luma looshka you..." As you can see this is a song of rare artistic merit, and deserving of wider circulation. Regards John |

Subject: RE: Lyrics Req: Squaws Along The Yukon From: Art Thieme Date: 16 Nov 98 - 09:28 PM Say John, Are you familiar with Bruce Cameron in New South Wales? He does a radio show called COME ALL YE that I'm wishing I could hear. This week he played a bunch of songs from me new CD & I'm certainly appreciative of that. All the best, Art |

Subject: RE: Lyrics Req: Squaws Along The Yukon From: John in Brisbane Date: 16 Nov 98 - 11:43 PM Art, We Northerners try not to associate too much with those people in New South Wales, and refer to them as cock-roaches. More seriously - I am not familiar with the name or the show. If we don't hear from Alan, Bob, Helen, Alison, Gordon ... from Sydney(ish) I'll make some more enquiries. Basically though Art I guess the idea is for Aussie Mudcatters to ring/write/email the radio station involved and to DEMAND frequent repeats of your CD. Regards John PS If Gordon reads this, are you associated with the Great Band Competition at the Woodford Festival? |

Subject: RE: Lyrics Req: Squaws Along The Yukon From: Jon Bartlett Date: 17 Nov 98 - 04:39 AM I've got the sheet music in front of me. (I say "the" sheet music, there was probably more than one). The song is claimed by cam Smith, 1936. The words are a mite different. The ones above in this thread are a bit closer to the set collected in northern BC by Phil Thomas about 20 years back. This sheet music is as recorded by Hank Thompson. Jon the offsider |

Subject: RE: Lyrics Req: Squaws Along The Yukon From: Art Thieme Date: 17 Nov 98 - 11:15 AM Jon, Are you the fellow that did such a fine job on Wade Hemsworth's song "The Wild Goose" (...high over the North shore and I'm goin' home...)?? It's my favorite version of that song for certain! Art Thieme |
