Probably not a politically correct song, but in true folk tradition this was sung by a late friend in Oz who learned it from the Berringer family in Billings Montana. I believe that Ted is an accomplished guitar/mandolin maker

I know the tune but not the words, and would appreciate some history. Suspect it was current in WWII.

Chorus goes something like..."Uma luma looshka, which means that I love you, If you'll be my baby I'll uma luma looshka you..." As you can see this is a song of rare artistic merit, and deserving of wider circulation.

Regards John

I believe the line is ugaluga muska , my dad has the song on record if I get a chance I'll see if I can find it, another line is " her skin I love to touch, but I just can't touch it much, because her fur lined parkas in the way," madnut

I've got this on a tape by Alaskan, Paul Roseland---the Singing Sourdough. I'll have to dig it out--am trying to move & stuff is sort o' packed. It's been years already---what's another day or 3?

Subject: Lyr Add: SQUAWS ALONG THE YUKON (f/Paul Roseland)
From: Art Thieme

Here's the words to "Squaws Along The Yukon" as sung by Paul Roseland

There's a salmon-scented girl who sets my heart awhirl,
She lives up in the Yukon far away,
She looks so mighty neat with the snowshoes on her feet,
As she mush the old trap line and she'd say.

CHORUS:
Ooga, ooga, ooga,--which means dat I love you,
If you'll be my daddy it means I'll love you too,
You can talk about your cheechacko girls so beautiful to see,
But squaws along the Yukon are good enough for me!
Inside her little tent many the hours there we spent,
While the old fishreel made music all day long,
She's got skin you love to touch, but you couldn't touch it much,
Because her fur-lined parka's in the way.

Chorus---

In an igloo warm and dry we sat there side by side,
And I told her of adventures brave and bold,
She's got eyes that really shine and lips o' cherry wine,
And a heart that's as pure as Klondike gold.

Chorus---

Art

Thanks Art, my Australian connection with this song has only recently passed away. This will help to keep his memory alive and kicking.

Say John,

Are you familiar with Bruce Cameron in New South Wales?

He does a radio show called COME ALL YE that I'm wishing I could hear. This week he played a bunch of songs from me new CD & I'm certainly appreciative of that.

All the best,

Art

Art,

We Northerners try not to associate too much with those people in New South Wales, and refer to them as cock-roaches.

More seriously - I am not familiar with the name or the show. If we don't hear from Alan, Bob, Helen, Alison, Gordon ... from Sydney(ish) I'll make some more enquiries.

Basically though Art I guess the idea is for Aussie Mudcatters to ring/write/email the radio station involved and to DEMAND frequent repeats of your CD.

Regards John

PS If Gordon reads this, are you associated with the Great Band Competition at the Woodford Festival?

I've got the sheet music in front of me. (I say "the" sheet music, there was probably more than one). The song is claimed by cam Smith, 1936. The words are a mite different. The ones above in this thread are a bit closer to the set collected in northern BC by Phil Thomas about 20 years back. This sheet music is as recorded by Hank Thompson. Jon the offsider

Jon,

Are you the fellow that did such a fine job on Wade Hemsworth's song "The Wild Goose" (...high over the North shore and I'm goin' home...)??

It's my favorite version of that song for certain!
