Murphy and Marckx are dear friends of mine, so I am posting their press release here in hopes that some Seattle/Tacoma area catters might want to come:

At last, the PUYALLUP VALLEY STRING BAND will be giving a concert of great old-time tunes and songs with fiddles, banjo, guitars, mandolin, and tin whistle. The band consists of Jim Ketterman, Jeff Samples, Scott Marckx and Jeanie Murphy. The event is at Borders Books Music & Cafe in Puyallup at 3829 S. Meridian. Their phone # is 253.845.5575.

March 31, 2001 Saturday evening, 8:00-10:00 p.m.

Alex, I'm impressed you can remember how to spell that word. I had to mention that town in a paper of mine last night and couldn't remember how to spell it. It isn't in spell check either.

Concerts have to be before or after late spring, because of the heavy tulip infestation at that time. The Slug fests are on the Olympic Penninsula and Vashon Island. The Indians have festivals, too, but although their Raines Dances (to make it go away), never worked you've got to give them an A for persistance. Kitsap, Satsop, Kittitas, and Klickitat, are some other nice names (with about 1000 otheres on that order). The Humptulips are out on the coast where their infestation does't impact on humanity or humidity so much.

PS: Those Humptulips are clever at disguising them selves as daffodils, but a few have discovered their true identity, although this has not been made public yet.

The worst pronunciation, perhaps, I ever heard was on the 1-800 number for Lowe's hardware. It said, "for directions to the pie-al-up store, press 4". I suppose that's understandable because "guy" is pronounced to rhyme with pie. But you'd think, since they have a store tehre, they might find out how to pronounce it.

Then again I did hear someone call it "poo-ee-yall-up" which is also understandable, albeit wrong.

I can spell it because I drive through it twice a day and it's all over them green-and-white freeway signs.

Those of you who know how to spell it, pronounce it, and FIND it, do come and hear Jeannie and Scott and their friends. They really are very good "old timey" musicians. Jeannie plays a mean banjo in a style sort of her own (part frailing, part three-finger, and part what-the-hell-is-that), and even plays a FRETLESS banjo on some numbers, which is a treat. She also sings like her maiden name was Carter, which I'm assured it wasn't.

Scott plays a damn' good fiddle.

I can't vouch for the other 2 guys except to say that Scott and Jeannie seem to attract quality musicians the way swimsuit models attract zit-faced teenage boys with visible signs of arousal, if you get my drift.

Hey wait a minute -- Warshington is the official pronunciation. If someone says "woshington" you can tell they're Not From Here.
