I love this tune too: there does seem to be a tendency in Scotland to play an E instead of a D towards the end of the final phrase of the tune: a wee bit of a clash if the 2 versions are played together! I learned it from Tommy's own website where it is, as in this video, definitely a D!

Many years ago this tune was played regularly at the Brocklesby Hunt session in Goxhill Lincs. The adjacent disused airfield was home to the
US army airforce During the Second World War. It was known as USAAF Station 345. In 2010 a memorial was erected in the NW corner of the airfield to commemorate those who served there. It incorporates a propeller from a P38

several years ago - the last really hot summer we had - we spent the summer travelling in Ireland. I heard Inisheer in several sessions and it was the one tune I had a go at writing down from memory. I think I got it a bit right. What a lovely tune.

I think of it with margarets waltz and ashokans farewell as one of the best waltzes around. Well done that man who wrote it.

I know tommy walsh, who is definitely the composer of inisheer. I was on holidays with him in inisheer when he composed the tune. That must be over 33 years ago.   We all learned it at the time. I have since heard so many different versions, which is great. The first time it was played on t.v. was good Friday, many , many years ago on rte. Tommy is still alive and kicking in Dublin.

Me & chums played this at a party last night - great tune - didn't know its name, even though I'd played it in sessions with others loads've times.

Thanks Desert Dancer. I had tried that route but got to second guessing myself. As it turns out, Frday I asked permission thru crashed music and just got a response already today - Tues.! Like you thought, they were fine with it for the reason I gave as long as we credit the composer and publisher. I thought it would probably take forever to hear back from them. I'm pretty impressed!!

In this case your best bet is probably to contact Tommy Walsh directly and ask permission. There's contact information towards the end of this discussion on "The Session" (here).

AFIK Most folks don't mind non-profit use if permission is asked and credit is given.

Another fan of Inisheer, a couple of local amateur musicians, including myself, would like to record our own arrangement of the song as part of the background music for a slide show. The slide show is a local tribute to our firefighters that have made heroic efforts fighting horrendous wildfires this past week, in which our small town lost only a few homes, but a lot of forest and ranch lands. Anyway, it is not going to be sold or done for profit, unless maybe donations will be asked for after the slide show to go towards the fire station and rehab efforts. Is it still necessary for us to get permission to record it for such use? And how would I go about it?

Of course you can play it; I do from time to time, though until you started this thread and I looked up the tune, I had no idea what it was called (somebody taught it to me down at the pub one night -I thought it was Scottish!) or who had written it.  The fact that it's in copyright only matters if you decide to record it commercially, in which case you'd need to pay royalties, or if you're playing it professionally in a commercial venue, in which case you might need to specify so that the proper PRS payment (might) go to the writer.  If you're amateur players you don't need to worry about it at all.

Inis Óirr (Inisheer, formerly Inis Oithir) is the smallest of the Aran Islands.  There's some info about the place  here.   The Fiddler's Companion  describes the tune as attributed to Thomas Walsh, so there seems to be a degree of uncertainty as to authorship, which suggests that he may not be contemporary.  Now we just need somebody who knows who this particular Thomas Walsh was, or is... I do seem to remember the name in a musical context, but can't put my finger on it just now.

Does anyone know if the tune "Inisheer" (performed by "Cherish the Ladies" is in the public domain? I have found the name "Thomas Walsh" listed as the composer on a CD. Is he a modern composer or from another time period?
