Subject: RE: lyric requests From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 10 Mar 01 - 10:36 AM A case for reminding people to read the FAQ on the Forum page, if ever I saw one. |

Subject: RE: lyric requests From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 10 Mar 01 - 11:54 AM A bloody great big banner on the main page might do it, but probably not... Malcolm |

Subject: RE: lyric requests From: wysiwyg Date: 10 Mar 01 - 11:57 AM In some forums, when you create a thread there are several steps. In some, you click from screen to screen-- this person may have been following a custom learned elsewhere. Were any of you kind enough to e-mail the person to inquire what they needed and help them get it here at Mudcat? I will. ~Susan |

Subject: RE: lyric requests From: Jon Freeman Date: 10 Mar 01 - 12:09 PM Susan, I didn't and I wasn't really thinking of this specific thread. It is just sometimes disheartening when you know the effort (mostly Joe Offer) that has gone into the FAQ to realise how little it is used. Jon |

Subject: RE: lyric requests From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 10 Mar 01 - 12:15 PM Good for you, Susan. Like Jon, I was talking in general terms. I don't email people about their questions, though I always answer here if I am able, and will happily do anything I can to help if 2x202 returns to this thread. I do understand that not everyone finds it easy to follow some of the procedures here, but the golden rule of every information site or newsgroup I've ever used has been to read the FAQ before posting; it isn't difficult unless the questioner isn't used to English, and in the long run it saves time and effort. Subject: RE: lyric requests From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Mar 01 - 12:16 PM Well, in this case, I just think somebody hit "submit" too soon, or they clicked on the "clear" button and deleted a whole page of typing. I've been known to do that... -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: lyric requests From: wysiwyg Date: 10 Mar 01 - 12:20 PM I'm in full mudgeon mode myself today Jon. But how you get people to read a FAQ is to help them JOIN and then MAKE FRIENDS and then steer them to the parts they need most. It's the same as any new-member-incorpoartion. You can't help unless you get close enough they can hear you. Some people need a little more aggressive welcoming than others. And not everyone with things to share has a lot of ease in getting into new things. Have you never found yourself welcomed graciously into something that might have seemed a bit intimidating? If you had been the one to post this thread, and then saw the boo boo and tried again, and saw this thread getting some action-- what would YOU hope had been said about your mistake? My apologies for speaking plainer than usual-- I know it's a shock when I go mudgenony, but there it is, I'm as much an idiot as everyone else. And I am likelier to get pissy over people roughing up new members than anything else around here. I suppose in the 3D world they'd call it advocacy. In these parts though it's not usually seen as positively, is it Jon. *G* ~S~ |

Subject: RE: lyric requests From: Allan C. Date: 10 Mar 01 - 12:21 PM One helpful thing to do when emailing these folks is to indicate the URL of their thread. A lot of folks post and do not realize that checking back on the posting is an important part of the process. Not only that, but they often forget where they posted or how to get there. |

Subject: RE: lyric requests (aborted attempt) From: Jon Freeman Date: 10 Mar 01 - 12:48 PM Susan, I appreciate that this one is likely to be a mistake which we all are capable of making but maybe I am the curmudgeon with regards to the rest. As Malcolm has indicated, it is standard practice to learn about a forum before joining in. This could involve reading a FAQ and reading posts just to try to get the feel of a place. Although I do try to be friendly and welcoming to new people, I believe an effort should be made by them to fit in, find how a place works and ask for help if needed. My feelings regarding the FAQ extends to longer standing members - OK, I am just miserable but I think it is reasonable to expect people to seek information useing the available resources before asking a question - this is just me but if I see someone has made an effort, I will do all I can to help but my patience can wear very thin where I feel no effort has been made. Subject: RE: lyric requests (aborted attempt) From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 10 Mar 01 - 12:54 PM Actually, I was thinking of the thread title when I originally posted, not the fact that there was no message! |
