Subject: RE: I am a member now! From: Jim the Bart Date: 13 Mar 01 - 09:49 PM Just look around a bit and chime in when you feel you have something to offer. There are a lot of good people here; a lot of collected wisdom and helpful information. There's also a lot of nonsense. The real trick is knowing one from the other. Welcome. Enjoy yourself Bart (who used to play trumpet, before the guitar beckoned) |
Subject: RE: I am a member now! From: SINSULL Date: 13 Mar 01 - 10:52 PM Adam, Check with your parents first. But we would love to hear you perform in Paltalk. You will get an opportunity to speak with other Mudcatters including Deckman. There are concerts too. And look through the old threads. You will find lots of first class information on choosing, caring for, and playing all sorts of instruments including (maybe especially) guitar. Welcome! Mary |

Subject: RE: I am a member now! From: katlaughing Date: 13 Mar 01 - 10:58 PM Welcome to the Mudcat, ARB! You are doing well, already, even starting your own thread. Of course, you're an old hand at that now, aren't you? Be sure to click on the "Kids" link on the top menu bar and see what we have in there, too. Max, the owner of the Mudcta, is always looking for ideas of what to include there, too. I played violin from 8 yrs old through high school and a bit after, plus piano...there are a lot of us who've done such things, so if you have any questions, holler, okay? kat |

Subject: RE: I am a member now! From: gnu Date: 14 Mar 01 - 05:38 AM Adam, you hooked up with a great bunch of people. I've only been a member for a short time and I've learned a lot from them - at four times your age. Roger, I am sure that if Adam's mom said it was ok to join, she will keep an eye on his participation from time to time. I'm sure he has heard language just as bad, if not worse, in the schoolyard and he sounds like he's got a good head on his shoulders, so I'm sure he'll take it all in stride. Welcome Adam !! gnu

Subject: RE: I am a member now! From: Banjer Date: 14 Mar 01 - 05:58 AM WELCOME, ADAM It is always good to see that this forum is drawing new members. It is even GREATER to see that those new members are young folks like yourself. Too often we find a lot of the traditional music being ignored by younger people. It is so good to know that you and your team are using the trad music and that it even helped you get to higher levels of your competition!! Of course, how you guys presented it was the larger part of your success. Keep up the good work! |
Subject: RE: I am a member now! From: Naemanson Date: 14 Mar 01 - 06:55 AM Well, let me chime in too. Welcome Adam, I hope you enjoy your visits to Mudcatville. There is plenty to laugh about, to care about, to see and to hear. And if you think your parents balked at paying for guitar lessons wait till you ask to go to a festival, or even worse, a Mudcat gathering! What state are you in? You might even be close to some of our other young members. (BTW, you should check with your parents before answering any personal questions.) |
Subject: RE: I am a member now! From: Morticia Date: 14 Mar 01 - 11:31 AM Glad to see you here Adam, be sure to check out the FAQ at the top and if you look at the photo page in resouces ( quick links also at the top) you'll get to see what some of us look like......but don't let that put you off or anything... |
Subject: RE: I am a member now! From: Don Firth Date: 14 Mar 01 - 12:37 PM Welcome aboard, Adam! Congratulations on your recent win and good luck on the competition coming up. Wish I could be there, but I live out in Seattle -- about 25 miles south of Bob (Deckman) Nelson, whom I've known for almost 50 years. He got interested in traditional music when he was about your age (maybe two or three years older, so in a way, you have a head start on him) and he's been singing ever since -- one of the best folksingers around this neck of the woods. Violin, French horn, piano, and guitar. Sounds like you're a pretty musical kind of guy. I've spend most of my life singing for people (coffeehouses, concerts, and stuff) and singing with people -- getting together with other folksingers, singing with them, and swapping songs. It's about as much fun as I can imagine, and it's something you can do it for your whole life long. You're doing great! Keep up the good work, and have fun with it! Don Firth

Subject: RE: I am a member now! From: Naemanson Date: 14 Mar 01 - 01:29 PM Where did the competition thing come from? Adam didn't mention it. If you are in a competition Adam, I wish you the best of luck. And I want to echo the rest who say, whatever you do with music, have fun! |
Subject: RE: I am a member now! From: Hollowfox Date: 14 Mar 01 - 01:44 PM Welcome! What you do is, if you have a question, start a thread and ask (you knew that), if you have an answer, post it on the right thread. If you know where you got the answer, that's a good thing, and sometimes people need to know. If it's a guess/opinion, that's ok too, but sometimes you have to say it is. If you disagree with something, post that if you want to (why you disagree is good, even if the answer is just that something doesn't sound right). If there's anything you think should be in the Kid's Link, let Max know. (Here's the dull-but-necessary grownup part; hey, I'm a mom) Naemanson is right, check before you put on anything more personal than what instruments you play, and stuff like that. We're a pretty good bunch here at the 'Cat, but remember, never post anything you wouldn't be willing to tellto the whole universe (or in a school assembly). As you found out, anybody from anywhere in the world can get on the 'Cat and read the threads, including scumbags that might live near you. (That's enough lecturing, hollowfox!) Anyway, have fun here at the Mudcat Cafe, Mary. |
Subject: RE: I am a member now! From: Deckman Date: 14 Mar 01 - 06:57 PM Welcome aboard Adam. You really captivated EVERYONE with your first posting. You should know that you have a lot of people on your side, as well as looking out for your best interests. About instruments; I've always felt that the piano is the basic instrument. Study it well, and you will learn much about music theory, scales, chords, chord progressions, transposing, music history, plus it's a great instrument to goof around with when you feel inventing a melody. What do I do now? ... well, one thing you might do is just hang out for a while. Check mudcat maybe once a day, to see what's new. Just by reading the postings, you'll absorb a great deal of information. Don't be in a hurry to post a message unless you feel inspired. But, if something you read creates a question with you, chase it, through the library, talking with people, asking questions. I was about your age when I discovered folksongs. I almost lived at the library until I was 15 while I was exploring the subject. It took me several years to realize just how much information and knowledge I had absorbed and how many skills I had developed on my own. Have fun. Bob (deckman) Nelson |
Subject: RE: I am a member now! From: catspaw49 Date: 14 Mar 01 - 07:06 PM Hey Hollowfox......If you checked the Region 15 of the Ohio Destination Imagination on ARB's birthday thread I think.....YOU are the one that lives closest to him!!!!! Adam, Hollowfox is right, I'm just kidding her a bit (she's in Youngstown). Be careful what you say on the net. Check with your Mom before you put out any personal info. The Mudcat is a pretty safe place, but we never know who will drop by. Spaw |
Subject: RE: I am a member now! From: tiggerdooley Date: 14 Mar 01 - 07:07 PM Just want to say Hi, Adam. I haven't been here long enough myself to offer an official welcome (about three weeks). You're not the only kid here - I'm 23 years old, but I haven't grown up yet! You'll find that you make more sense than us 'adults' most of the time. See you later, mate! Tigger |
Subject: RE: I am a member now! From: Sorcha Date: 14 Mar 01 - 08:05 PM I swear I posted an Official Welcome to this, but it dissapeared. Maybe I hit clear entries instead. Anyway, Adam, I'm glad you have joined us.
In my personal opinion, you are the politest, most mannered person under 21 that I have ever met. I was so impressed that you bothered to say "Thank You" and then to let us know that you won. It was a WOW moment for me. This site will teach you everything you need to know about very nearly everything--folk music, music in general, how to behave and Not to behave on the Internet, computer "HTML" codes and tags, and no question on Mudcat is too simple or "Non Music" related to answer......Ask away, dear heart. |
Subject: RE: I am a member now! From: aussiebloke Date: 14 Mar 01 - 08:52 PM G'day Adam, and welcome aboard the good ship Mudcat... If is great to meet a young'un with an interest in folk music (whatever that is...) Question for ya: What is the difference between your 'violin' and a 'fiddle'? aussiebloke |
Subject: RE: I am a member now! From: hesperis Date: 14 Mar 01 - 09:51 PM Joe - interesting you should say that. Oboe is the only instrument that I totally, absolutely CAN'T play! :) |
Subject: RE: I am a member now! From: ARB Date: 15 Mar 01 - 07:52 AM To aussiebloke: The difference between a violin and a fiddle is that a fiddle has a lower bridge. That allows a person to play more than two strings at the same time. My grandfather told me this so I'm not sure I'm right. The violin I play is just a half size. I'm short for my age. |
