I'm wondering if anyone knows of a website or a book where I can research Native American music of the Great Lakes region. My great grandmother was from the Cree or Obejiwa { sp? ] tribe and I'd like to learn something about their musical traditions and other customs. Thanks - Wesley

Ojibwa or Ojibway is how I've seen it spelled.

I have some links, Wesley, as this is the music I love so much, but these will get you started along with the excellent link Sorcha included:

Ojibway Music Recordings if you scroll down you will see a book and CD of trad stuff recorded in the early part of the last century. I ahve one of Keith Secola's CD and , while he blends old with new and sounds pretty new, I LOVE his music! They call it Alter-Native music!

An excellent book you would enjoy is "THE INDIANS BOOK: Songs and Legends of the American Indians" by Natalie Curtis...she collected many songs in the field and wrote them down by hand. The book has those as well as the actual words in the native language of the singer and her translation, as well as pictures and verbatim stories of those she met. There are several copies available at www.bibliofind.com.
