Hi, Goldfinger - a Google Search (click) turns up a number of versions. Mostly, it's the verses you have (the only ones I knew), plus:

I'll take Jesus for my savior, you take him too (3x)
Look away beyond the blue. (horizon)

I'll wear the robe, and you wear the crown (3x)
If I reach Heaven before you do, I'll wait there for you. (3x)
When all my sins are washed away, I'll climb the golden stairs (3x)
I love the Master up on high, you love him too. (3x)

Hope that does the trick for you.

-Joe Offer-

Here's the way I learned the song in Wisconsin in the late 1950s:

DO LORD

Do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me, O Lordy
Do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me
Do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me
Look away beyond the blue.

I've got a home in glory land that outshines the sun (3x)
Look away beyond the blue.

I took Jesus as my savior, you take him too (3x)
Look away beyond the blue.

Jimmy got laid by his cousin,
I want her too (3X)
Jimmy got laid by his cousin, I want her too
'Fore my balls turn blue.

In my never ending quest to trash otherwise fine songs, this is one where I have a lot more verses for like the one above.

Well don't forget the union version of the song...

In Union There Is Strength

We've got a boss that slave drives us and we'll remember him (that bastard),
We've got a boss that slave drives us and we'll remember him, (2 times)
Look to solidarity.

Refrain:
In union in union in union there is strength, (3 times)
Look to solidarity.

I've got Jesus on my button, you've got him too, (3 times)
Look to solidarity.

(refrain)

Jesus Christ was a member of the carpenter's local, (3 times)
Local ninety-three oh three.

(refrain)

From: mousethief

To the same melody,

I've got a sister in gloryland (or Beulah Land, wherever that is)
Outshine the sun
I've got a sister in gloryland
Outshine the sun
I've got a sister in gloryland
Outshine the sun
Away beyond the sky

I've got a brother/mother/father/etc.

Come and go to gloryland
Outshine the sun (etc.)

This from Mississippi John Hurt, who RULES.

There's also:

"I got a Lord in heaven above who hears and answers prayers" (3x)

and

"The Lord is my shepherd and I shall not want" (3x)

Also, "Do Lord" makes a cool (if somewhat curious) medley with "Good Ol' Mountain Dew."

Helpful hint (which everyone but me probably already knows, but here goes...):

rich r posted a URL that I suspect came from his list of Traced threads on Mudcat. For fun, I tried that URL. It just took me to a blank page, which is what I expected having had this problem many times. But if you edit the URL and change "threadID" to threadid, it works and you get to the thread.

Bill & I have whined to Max about this problem but ....

actually it wasn't from a list of traced threads, I did a forum search for it and then copy/pasted it into here. I confess to being unaware that that doesn't work and from what you say it wouldn't have helped to use a blue clicky becasue I would have copy/pasted the exact same information. How curiously queer.

Subject: Lyr Add: LIGHTS IN THE VALLEY and DEADHEADS AND...
From: raredance
Date: 20 Mar 01 - 06:59 PM

Of course the other solution is wanton duplication, Here is the info I tried to cite from the other thread.

"A Folksinger's Guide to Grass Roots Harmony" by Ethel Raim and Josh Dunson (Oak Publications 1968) contains the following information about the tune/song:

"Here's a tune that has appeared as a dozen different songs in the string band repertoire. J E Mainer's Mountaineers, one of the great old time commercially recorded bands, sings a religious version of the tune with harmonies that make full use of its depth, Lights in the Valley...Crockett Ward and his Boys use pretty much the same tune for their memorable Deadheads and Suckers."

I will put both sets of lyrics below. "Lights in the Valley" has elements in common with the lyrics of the camp song "Do Lord."

LIGHTS IN THE VALLEY

I'm waitin' for my Jesus; He's comin' after me.
I'm waitin' for my Jesus; He's comin' after me.
I'm waitin' for my Jesus; He's comin' after me.
Look away behind the moon.

CHORUS:
Lights in the valley outshine the sun
Lights in the valley outshine the sun
Lights in the valley outshine the sun
Look away behind the moon.

Get ready mother, He's comin' after you. (3X)
Look away behind the moon.

CH

Get ready father, He's comin' after you. (3X)
Look away behind the moon.

CH

Get ready sinner, He's comin' after you (3X)
Look away behind the moon.

CH

DEADHEADS AND SUCKERS

Deadheads and suckers, how can you live?
How can you live, darlin', how can you live?
Oh it's deadheads and suckers, how can you live
When good men are dyin' every day?

I'm goin' around the mountain, bound to leave you now.
Bound to leave you now, darlin', bound to leave you now.
Goin' around the mountain, bound to leave you now,
And darlin' I don't know what to do.

Light in the graveyard, it outshines the sun.
Outshines the sun, darlin', outshines the sun.
Light in the graveyard, it outshines the sun.
And darlin' I don't know what to do.

High sheriff and police am runnin' after me.
Runnin' after me, darlin', runnin' after me.
High sheriff and police am runnin' after me.
And Lordy I don't know what to do.

Mighty happy meeting, don't you want to go?
Don't you want to go, darlin' don't you want to go?
Mighty happy meeting, don't you want to go?
Yes, we'll all go.

Another song that uses the tune is "Lost all my money but a two-dollar bill" which has been recorded by Doc Watson.

Thanks, Alison. Your 1st verse appears in My Blood Runs Chiller and Cold. In the same song, I've got a home in Beulah Land outshines the sun cf. with your 3rd verse. I think all three are going to show up in several more.

[(oh Lordy) 1st time only]
Do, Lord... (twice more)
Look away-yay beyon-ond the blue ho-riz-on

We used to sing a version as kids:

Do, Lord, oh do Lord, oh do you remember me [3 times]
Look away beyond the blue horizon

There were a lot of other verses which have faded now -- something like, "I've got a home in Jordan, way beyond the sea." Sorry, the gray matter, what there is left, isn't responding.

There's an echo of this in Be Gone Forever by Anna McGarrigle and Keith Sykes.

Sometimes we're ugly
Not really worth it
This is a lonely planet's story
We're the third one from the sun

Do Lord oh do remember us
Yes, yes, remember us

There will be a singer
Whenever our time has come to die
Be gone forever

Also memorably recorded by Guy Clark.
