I could have sworn I once heard this sung in German. Sure enough:
Here.

Lyrics copy-pasted by me from link. -Joe Offer, Mudcat Music Editor-

    1. Tell me the tales that to me were so dear,
Long long ago, long, long ago!
Sing me the songs I delighted to hear,
    Long, long ago, long ago.
Now you have come, all my grief is removed.
Let me forget that so long you have roved!
Let me believe that you love, as you loved
    Long, long ago, long ago!

    2. Do you remember the path, where we met,
Long, long ago, long, long ago?
Ah yes! you told me, you ne'er would forget,
    Long, long ago, long ago.
Then, to all others' my smile you preferred.
Love, when you spoke, gave such charm to each word.
Still my heart treasures the praises I heard,
    Long, long ago, long ago.

    3. Though by your kindness my fond hopes were raised,
Long, long ago, long, long ago,
You by more eloquent lips have been praised,
    Long, long ago, long ago.
But, by long absence, your truth has been tried,
Still to your accents I listen with pride,
Blessed, as I was when I sat by your side,
    Long, long ago, long ago.

Sag’ mir das Wort, das dereinst mich hatt’ betört!
Lang’, lang’ ist’s her; lang’, lang’ ist’s her!
Sing’ mir das Lied, das ich einst so gern’ gehört!
Lang’, lang’ ist’s her; lang’ ist’s her!
    Dich und mein Glück, all du wieder mir gibst;
Weiß ja nicht mehr, wie so lang’ du ausbliebst.
Weiß ja nur noch, wie du einst mich geliebt.
Lang’, lang’ ist’s her; lang’ ist’s her!

Denk’ an dein Leid, das du scheidend mir geklagt!
Lang’, lang’ ist’s her; lang’, lang’ ist’s her!
Weißt du das Wort, das ich weinend dir gesagt?
Lang’, lang’ ist’s her; lang’ ist’s her!
Kehre, o kehre zu mir bald zurück!
Bei dir allein, nur bei dir ist mein Glück.
Weißt du nicht noch, wie du einst mich geliebt?
Lang’, lang’ ist’s her; lang’ ist’s her!

I used to hear my mother sing this song or parts of it around the house. I always thought it had to do with old stories of Jesus, etc.
Instead it's a love song or a song of family memories, but still touching. I must not have paid that much attention to mom's words-- or else at my young age they didn't register.

But I have to add putting my prior mail into further context--
Mom was always singing lyric snippets around the house of a wide variety of song genres, and often in response to some funny household situation-- for example-- one night Dad wasn't home yet as expected-- I asked, then Mom explained it- -but as she left the room she sang that old song "father dear father, come home with me now.. the clock in the tower strikes 12..."
She didn't recall or say all the lyrics... years later I looked them up on the internet and I was shocked at the story... it's about a kid trying to drag his dad home from a tavern...with each verse the clock strikes later... and by the time they finally get home too late, a sick younger sibling has expired.
Mom must have just wanted to sing the funny parts-- another of her examples was "Ring ring the bell, Nelly, ring ring the bell--your father's asleep in the old county jail..."      Does anyone remember these old songs ??
