Subject: HELP - problems with winamp From: nutty Date: 20 Mar 01 - 10:19 AM I'm feeling a total idiot again .... can anyone help The Folk Legacy site has changed a lot of its sound files and they no longer play on RealAudio so I downloaded Winamp Now all I get when I click on a file is the file address and this happens with all the MP3 files on the site Is it me?? And if it is --- What can I do?? PS. I have removed it and reinstalled but am still having the same problems |
Subject: RE: HELP - problems with winamp From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 20 Mar 01 - 10:34 AM Hmm... the same thing happens when I try it, so it's not you. Until Sandy sees this thread, here is a workaround: Click on the song title. From the list of files that appears, copy the URL for the sample you want. Open Winamp, and go to PLAY - LOCATION. Paste the URL into the "Open Location" box. A bit messy, but it works. Malcolm |

Subject: RE: HELP - problems with winamp From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 20 Mar 01 - 11:22 AM More: .m3u is a playlist file, so if you copy-and-paste the URL for that into Winamp, you can hear all the samples on the list in one go. I don't know why Winamp doesn't open the file directly, though, as it's a supported file-type; perhaps the problem lies in our browser settings; presumably you're using Netscape? I've just tried IE (which I believe you use, Kat?) and there Winamp automatically opens the playlist files without messing about. Jon Freeman might have an answer. I should imagine that Real Player would behave similarly if you assign the file associations to it, but personally I find the program rather aggressive in interfering unbidden with my settings, so have forbidden it to touch anything not in its native formats. A little poking around on the site also reveals that the Real Audio files are still there, in the same directory as the mp3s, but are no longer linked to. Malcolm |
Subject: RE: HELP - problems with winamp From: nutty Date: 20 Mar 01 - 12:34 PM Thanks Malcolm ... yes I am using Netscape .... but have no problem with the RealAudio files , they play perfectly I shall try what you suggest .... watch this space As I am no Techno genius it may be beyond me |
Subject: RE: HELP - problems with winamp From: nutty Date: 20 Mar 01 - 03:47 PM Thanks Malcolm .. I managed to do it the messy way Could it be a folk legacy site problem .. do you think I can manage to play MP3 files from other sites |
Subject: RE: HELP - problems with winamp From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 20 Mar 01 - 07:54 PM At the moment, it looks to me as if it's to do with the way Winamp installs to Netscape, combined with the way Sandy has his site set up (intermediate "forwarding" files like .m3u or .ram can sometimes create problems); I had a similar problem with Real Audio files at Musical Traditions a while back (though that got put right somehow, I think by the site manager) -for now, you might find it easier to use IE for mp3s at Folk Legacy. As a rule, Netscape and Winamp seem to behave perfectly well with mp3s at most sites. Alternatively, you could always try uninstalling Winamp and telling Real Audio that it's allowed to play .mp3 and .m3u formats; that might work too. (View -Preferences -Media Types -ReAssociate: check the appropriate boxes) Not everyone checks to make sure that their sites work properly in both of the most commonly-used browsers, but it's equally as likely that it's to do with the way you -and I- have Netscape configured. Subject: RE: HELP - problems with winamp From: Willie-O Date: 20 Mar 01 - 08:08 PM Malcolm, yer a gentleman and a scholar--and a techwiz too! I use Winamp as my default mp3 player, and Netscape 4.7, and have a lot of trouble getting mp3.com to play streaming files. Sometimes they work, usually not. Gives me a glimpse of what to try... Subject: RE: HELP - problems with winamp From: nutty Date: 21 Mar 01 - 02:09 PM Sorry to keep on about this but I'm still trying to get my head round this .... There are other MP3 players Would I be better uninstalling Winamp and downloading Real Jukebox, for instance, or would I have the same problems with that? |
Subject: RE: HELP - problems with winamp From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 21 Mar 01 - 09:47 PM I wouldn't touch "Real Jukebox" even with somebody else's barge pole, but that's just personal prejudice. It tends to install itself all over the place -without asking- when you get RealPlayer, and took me some time to get rid of! As I suggested earlier, you should be able to configure RealPlayer to handle mp3s etc. in Netscape, though I haven't tried it myself, as I consider Winamp to be the lesser of two (necessary) evils. Really, it's just a question of trial-and-error until you arrive at a setup that works for you, and isn't too annoying... Malcolm |
