Hey, I've been lookin' for this thread for over a month now, but think I got it figured out now.

I'm a definite for Saturday, May 26 3pm (I'll be one of the early birds to help with the rearrangin'. I'd flood the ground beneath me with tears if I couldn't be there! Wish I could come durin' the summer too, but have my doubts about makin' the trip from Cleveland with gas price predictions as they are ($2.50 a gallon!).

As far as privateers go, one of my ancestors relatives, Isreal Thorndike from Maine, was a privateer, but I believe that was the Revolution, not in The War of 1812.

I was readin' in the Cleveland newpaper today that the 2001 Great Lakes Tall Ships Challenge includes a dozen or so sailing vessels that will dock in Cleveland (July 11-16) as well as in 6 other ports. Thus Cleveland will hold the first annual Cleveland Harborfest. Among the family entertainment we've got chantey singers, a steel drum band, jugglers and the like. Know anyone who's comin' to fill the spot of (Crankey Yankee, please don't cringe) "chantey singers"? If the accounts are right, we're expecting Canada's brigs Fair Jeanne & St. Lawrence II, schooners True North & Bluenose II, Playfair and Pathfinder, Ukraine's Bat Kivschyna, and the US's schooners Grand Nellie, Pride of Baltimore II, Red Witch & Highlander, plus the HMS Tecumseh (a modern replica of the 19th century British war schooner) and the US Brig Niagara, a reconstruction of Perry's ship measuring 198'.

If anyone's interested, let me know and I'll help find places to put you up!

Is there a local bus line that connects the Greyhounds terminal on Congress Street to the China Sea (but doesn't involve "rounding the Horn")?

And Edmund, I'm sure that some of the singers will still want to do some singing later that evening after we adjourn (if we adjourn) from the China Sea Marine Trading Co.

Now I spoke again to Capt. Bunker at the store and the time and date seem fine; he and Sharon are looking forward to some more robust singing. Again, this is not a concert but more a swap of nautical songs with some "facilitation" to break up brawls. ;-)

We'd like to know who is definitely coming!

From Roll & Go we have:

Brett Burnham, Norris Dale, Eli Dale, Dick Dufresne, and Charlie Ipcar and maybe two others

Others expressing interest above were:

Kendall Morse, Uncle Jaque, Cranky Yankee, Brian Hoye, Dahlin, Julia & Fred, Jeri, Joy, Great Lakes Tim and I may have missed a few.

Edmund Thomas, you have the time, date, and place correct. On Friday afternoon and evening at the Press Room in Portsmouth is a weekly music session. And, apparently, on Sunday is another somewhere in New Hampshire. Bat Goddess and Curmudgeon are running it so I can't do any more than point you to the above posts.

This sounds fabulous. My wife and I would like to come down from Ottawa. I haven't done any chantey singing since I visited the Victoria Nautical Song Circle in Victoria, British Columbia a couple of years ago. I got a bit confused with all the postings, so I would like to confirm the location and timing: China Sea Marine Trading Co. at 10 Dana St. in the Old Port on Saturday, 26 May 01, starting at approximately 4 p.m.

Any chance of further musical happenings that evening or on Saturday?

The Cruizer class of brig sloops, the largest class of warships ever built in the age of sail carried 16 32pdr carronades. And they were only 100 foot long. The carronade, although of large calibre was very short and recoiled on a slide (some were fitted with non-recoiling mountings). Nearly all RN sloops buit at this time were similar, as indeed were American sloops, such as Hornet and Argus.

Schooners were built with even lighter scantings but could manage 12 or 18 pdr carronades. I only have details of American privateers captured and taken into RN service were smaller than LYNX (between 80 and 100 feet) and carried mostly 12s, usually about of them.

The idea of a privateer schooner is to captured unarmed or lightly armed merchant ships, and avoid warships. Any fighting was done as closely as possible, usually by boarding - privateers had much larger crews than merchant vessels. And they didn't want to pound their opponent as it reduced the value of their capture.

I suppose we'll know for sure if the schooner gets built.

Les

I think I would have to disagree with you, Les. The carronade was a large caliber gun used for close fighting. The sloops of war, having light scantlings, were not intended for that work. I would guess a more historically accurate reproduction would have four pounders and a couple of long nines.

The status of John Paul Jones is a favourite subject of many. Americans see him as the 'Father the US Navy', and the first Captain of an US Naval Vessel. Of course, the British did not recognise Congress and its Continental Navy, and so could not have afforded him this status (except retrospectively). As he was born in our islands, he was regarded as traitor, a privateer at best, and a 'Scotch Pirate' at worst. A similar state of affairs arose in your Civil War when crews of Confederate Navy vessels and privateers were threatened with being hung as pirates, if taken by US Naval vessels.

JPJ was a bit mercenary, you know, and later actually held a higher rank in the Russian Navy than the one he held in the Continental Navy!

But the American Revolution isn't really my specialist subject. And anyway stuff about the American Revolution is too early for the 1812 War. I thought that the State of Maine reached a reasonable arrangement with the Royal Navy in that war. I'm not sure that you need a privateer!

About Lynx's armament. Many sloops in the Royal Navy were of similar length and were armed with carronades, with possibly a couple of long nines as bow-chasers. So my guess would be 8 18pdr carronades a side.

Well, there are some great songs about John Paul Jones who while a regular commissioned U.S. Navy captain was refered to as a "privateer" by some and "pirate" by others. I'd like to hear more from Les. ;-)

Privateering songs, not quite but there's 'Constitution and Guerriere'. I only sing the 'Shannon and Chesapeake' which was written sort of in answer to the original, but then I'm just an English bigot! I hope that your privateer makes it through our blockade.**BG**

Uncle Jaque, the Antelope's guns were not "crack" 4 pounders but "cracked" 4 pounders, i.e., weak and prone to exploding when fired.

Good question on the privateering songs. I'll have to do some research. Especially about the privateer from the coast of Maine (Dart(?) or Dash(?)).

Re the LYNX:
There were no flyers, just a poster tacked to an upright, and I think they would have taken umberage had I ripped it down and made off with it. But I did write down the following:
Inquire of:
Captain Alastair Doyne-Ditmas
Rockport Marina
PO Box 203
Rockport ME 04856
And don't quote me on the number of guns. I didn't write that down, but the # 18 seems about right. I guess 18 guns on a 122' ship would have to be fairly small, eh? Like "Crack 4-pounders" or something. They were looking for Gunners, as well as Seamen and Musicians, by the way.
I think these feet are pretty well nailed to the land... The LYNX needs people with the experience and skill fellow Crew Members can rely on to save their hides when the chips are down and seas are high - which alas I do not possess... but GAWD I'd love to go!

Anyone know any 1812 Privateering songs? (Besides "Barretts'")

"Crew to man a 122' 18 gun Sq.Topsail Schooner the LYNX to be launched in ME this Summer."
What! Who's doing this? Is this reality or some more wistful thinking? Come on, Uncle Jaque, bring back at least a copy of the flier. I have this vision of all these folk singers and aspiring shantysingers all lined up, donkey's breakfast over their shoulders, striped jerseys, sea chests full of Nutri-grain, concertinas, trying to convince the mate and captain that they should be signed on. Reminds me of the old riddle: how many shantymen does it take to change a sail?

Ahoy, all!
I'm using the computer in the lobby of the Best Western Camden riverhouse Hotel here in scenic Camden, Maine where my RAFG (Responsible Adult Female Guardian), Daughter, her Friend Kyle an I are spending the night after a family outing. After explaining to the Manager what we were about, as they get a few musicians through here with more than a passing interest in the lore of the Sea, she extended an invitation to use the conference room here should we ever want to do this in Camden some time. It's big enough for around 25 comfortably i'd say, but a little "sterile" compared to China Seas. I'm thinking rain backup for an outside thing perhaps. She also suggested the Opera house & gave me a local contact well connected with Camden area resources. It gets kind of crazy up here in the Summer, but will file this info away for future refference.

Sorry about the confusion on date - don't have a calender right here but the 26th sounds about right - the Sat. of Memorial Day Weekend. And 1600 it is; hopefully I can get down there early enough to help clear decks - but my being anywhere on time, much less early, is usualy a miracle in itself!

Kendall: if you can get Gordon in tow...

We're not worthy;

We're not worthy;

We're not worthy;
(My sentiments anyway, if not of all)

But haul 'im in anyway!! He'll be most welcome and appreciated!
As to what we might bring, etc., let's keep one another posted. I'm open to suggestion. Do we have anything like a head-count yet?
Kendall: Could you please bring more of your "Beginner's Luck" CDs? Cpt. Steve is interested in some and I think a few others may be as well.
OK Lads, here's a teaser (details to follow):
While dining in a Camden eatery today, saw poster advertising for Crew to man a 122' 18 gun Sq.Topsail Schooner the LYNX to be launched in ME this Summer, sailing South down East coast to Carrabian then 'round the Horn (I assume) to Pacific.. all in authentic 1812 garb & gear in carachter as working Living Historians - U.S. Privateers. I WANNA GO!!!! (Mamma won't let me!:>{( ) Hell, I hardly know my dolphin striker from a poop-deck anyway... "Kranky"; according to all yer credentials, you could start as the first Mate & work yer way up! Tell the Capt. what 'e's full of & which way to steer, & how to do it right. I can't fathom how they would know which sail to put up first without your sage counsel on deck. But first come t' Portland & show us all how a real Sea Chanty is properly to be sung, won't ye?
I for one will be lookin' forward tae it!

Brian,

Clarification! On 5/26/01 "we" will be gathering again at China Sea Marine Trading Co. at 10 Dana St. in the Old Port for more songs of the sea.

In June Roll & Go begins hosting the 4th Sunday "Shanty Sings" at the Portland Observatory on Munjoy Hill.

Roll & Go's next appearance at our informal "sing" at Ri-Ra's, a new smoke-free pub and restaurant on the waterfront next to the Casco Bay Lines, will probably take place on Tuesday, May 8th, 7 to 8:30 pm.

Have we settled on the place date and time? Uncle Jaque asked for people to sign on for the 28th after which silence reigned supreme.

I received a message from Kendall saying the Portland Harbor Museum is now open on weekends if we haven't settled on a venue yet.

The "9" looks all right if you stand on your head, or do a back flip.

Sorry, Joy, but maybe you can join us sometime this summer at one of the 4th Sunday Evening Shanty Sings at the Portland Observatory, beginning in June.

Hey! You're right, Kendall. My calendar has the same problem. Maybe their calendar shows the 26th as being a Saturday. Maybe the "6" got printed upside down.

I am planning to be there on the afternoon and evening of the 26th. That is the date I penned onto my calendar.
