Subject: Cross-border gigs--petition From: CamiSu Date: 20 Mar 01 - 10:05 PM Please don't flame me for this, and you don't even need to post, but Kim & Reggie Harris sent this to me, and I kind of let the ball drop, as I didn't have time then to clean it up and send it on. But as you can see by many of the names hereon, this seems to be a problem on the US-Canadian border. Comments? (Joe&Co You may yell at me if this is a downloading problem, and tell me another way to handle this) CamiSu
Please COPY and PASTE this petition to a separate page, add your name and place of residence, and then forward it to EVERYONE you know, even if you don't sign it. Thank you for caring about music. The following supporters of the Canadian and American Music Industry demand that bands who wish to play across the border be allowed to do so. Crossing the border to play a concert is almost impossible for both American and Canadian acts. We are tired of paying for concerts with an out-of-country headliner only to find out that they couldn't get across the border. We are tired of booking tours for our bands, only to be turned away. We believe it is imperative to assert a new law that will make it easier for touring bands to get into Canada and the United States without applying for a work permit that costs more than most local bands make playing across the border. If you receive this list and it has 100 people on it, please return it to

Subject: RE: Cross-border gigs--petition From: CamiSu Date: 20 Mar 01 - 10:16 PM Thanks Jon. I must have missed it then, and I felt bad that I'd not done something with it when K&R sent it to me. |

Subject: RE: Cross-border gigs--petition From: Jeri Date: 20 Mar 01 - 10:54 PM OK - I'm in grump mode. It's very vague - there is nothing specific in it - what are the laws they want changed? What do they want them changed to? Just "we're mad as hell, and we're not gonna take it anymore?" Back in Dec, I e-mailed the person at the return address to politely ask for more information and was soundly ignored. It's a chain letter. Anything that says "send to everyone you know" is a chain letter. CamiSu, I'm not flaming you. It's a rant - not a flame. :-) An awful lot of smart people, including Kim & Reggie Harris and others who's names appear on it, bought it. I strongly dislike chain letters - possibly because I've been taken in by them myself. After 101 days since we first got it with Gordon Bok's signature, this has 32 more names on it. Of course, there are millions of these floating around that have around the same number of names. Still, better to post one message here than send it to 10 people, who will collectively send it (with one more name) to 100 people, who will collectively send it (with one more name) to 1,000 people, who will collectively send it to 10,000 people... Here's an idea - if we add the folks who said they'd sign it from the other thread, I'm sure it will have over 100 signatures. Maybe you could complete it and send it back and see what happens, if anything. |

Subject: RE: Cross-border gigs--petition From: Bill D Date: 20 Mar 01 - 11:17 PM Does someone know EXACTLY who, or what agency, in each country controls this and makes these rules? Has anyone ever read the purported justification? Who actually wants musicians to stay at home? I need a real target when I complain! |

Subject: RE: Cross-border gigs--petition From: ddw Date: 21 Mar 01 - 12:44 AM I live in Windsor, Ont., the busiest border crossing between the U.S. and Canada, and my personal belief is that th is a load of crap. I know lots of Canadian artists who tour the states all the time (our own Rick F. has been known to go south occasionally) and there are Detroit bands in Windsor all the time. I also personally escorted a Detroit-area bluegrass band across the border a few years ago and there was minimal hassle. If there's somebody out there having a hard time crossing the border, I'd suggest it's because they arrive at the border with a lot of ATTITUDE toward the customs and immigration agents. That's a sure way to get major headaches.... cheers, david |

Subject: RE: Cross-border gigs--petition From: CamiSu Date: 21 Mar 01 - 10:14 AM Jeri Actually I figured I'd do that, as there is no way to get it back otherwise. And remember, my copy languished for a month. (I generally ignore chain letters, it was just who signed this one made me sit up and take a bit more notice. There're a lot more people I know here than usually show up on these things. (And I must admit I responded to everyone who sent me a copy of the NPR Funding letter, telling them that it was old and out of date and to let the thing die... that many fewer takers the next time around.) Oh, and I'm not at all offended. Sometimes I take it hook, line, AND sinker... CamiSu |
