Subject: HELP! TROUBLE UPLOADING WEBSITE

I'm ready to upload my performer's website but am well and truly stuck. I've downloaded an FTP programme (WS_FTP LE for Windows 95/98/NT (X86 Version) from Ipswitch, Inc. http://www.ipswitch.com) but have to admit I'm none the wiser and feeling dazed. If there are any non-techno-user-friendly notes I haven't found them. I've spent the last few days trying to connect my 4 page (MS Publisher) website to the net but now my head is spinning and I'm no further forward. I'm considering paying someone to come and connect it for me. But before the Yellow Pages beckons, does anyone have any advice (in non-technobabble please) that can help me connect, eg. another freeware FTP site with understandable instructions? Yours flummoxed Ian HP

Hi, Ian. I've only done it once, and it was ages ago, and I had phone help from my ISP. I had the same program you are using and found it very confusing. The main thing I didn't know is the first/main file, which is your homepage, must be named "index" and have html as the extension name. At least that is what I remember kept haning me up.

Here are a few places where you might find help. I've only scanned them quickly os don't know how good there are or are not. Good Luck!

I use Terrapin FTP - it's very friendly to use... click and it's cheap, too.

Make sure your filenames are entirely in lowercase, including the extensions, as this can cause problems. Use the _ underscore character instead of a space - file_name.html rather than file name.html - and be sure your links inside your pages have no syntax errors.

HTML isn't forgiving - get it wrong, and you may get no display at all!

Watch out if you are using Microsoft products to create your pages - they save as .HTM by default, which often results in links that don't work. I prefer to edit my HTML in Notepad, using save as *.* all files, so I can add .html to the filename.

You do have your server's notice that you have a website don't you? On mine the basic is index.html (all lower case) which my FTP locks onto, and I have to load my homepage into it, then the click-ons take one to other files loaded on later.

Let' expand that. Start with (www.)yourserver(.com)/yourid. Go to that with your FTP and load in your homepage as file index.html.

I've not used WS_FTP (I use Cute FTP) but looking at the instructions kat gave a link to, it looks to be straight forward.

If the problem with you are having is with getting a connection, you proabably need to check your settings with your ISP. Many ISPs provide instructions on how to set up FTP on thier web sites.

Another one, with connections: one of my ISPs required a "Request for WebSpace" form to be completed before I was able to use FTP - again, your ISP will have these details.

The index.html page may or may not be a requirement. I think that all my ISPs use this as a default page but do not insist on its presence. Yet again, this is information your ISP will have.

Jon

I use WS_FTP LE to maintain two sites. My ISP gave me all the necessary info. They have it set up so that when I log on (have to know user name and password) I have to change the remote directory (the one at my ISP) to the public directory, then ~username. Bernard's advice would have saved me many hours if I had known it earlier.

I do one thing that one very knowledgeable person told me is unnecessary....When I modify a page, I have to open it on my computer...if I try to open it from the FTP program it just sends it (or something.)

oops...in the initial setup box, as best I remember, I had to put my ISP in the Host box. Then when the program opened, the remote dirctory had myISPname.com/home/myusername....then I had to click on the public directory so it would read home/myusername/public_html

I think I had to talk to them first so they would set it up for me.

The other site I maintain couldn't remember their password, and I wasted a lot of time trying to guess it. Finally a secretary came up with the correct one!
