Hi all folk freaks out there!

Great stuff going on in this space.

Played a gig recently and was asked for the text to the song "The call and the answer".

A Dubliners CD informs me it was written by someone called "Colclough". Would I be correct in assuming that this is the songwriter "Phil Colclough" the same man who wrote that gem "Song for Ireland"? If so, how can I acquire the text and how can I get more information on this artist?

Has he also made recordings?

Will appreciate any help on this.

Check out my new CD on my website:

This would be a job for the very useful "Digitrad and Forum Search", which is on the main Forum page and which searches the Digital Tradition database and the enormous archive of discussion threads we have here.  If you were to type into it call and the answer, you would get a lot of references which would take a while to sift through, but Colclough would quickly find you two past discussions where the song has been posted:

The Call and the Answer

'you the music, i the dancer'

For more information about the Mudcat and how to use it to best effect, see the FAQ thread at the top of the Threads list on the main page.

The writer of Call and Answer is Phil Colclough - yes the gent who wrote Song For Ireland. I know very little about him so perhaps someone else can provide that info.

The words are ( --this is from memory so hopefully it will be accurate )

THE CALL AND THE ANSWER
by Phil Colclough

You call and I run
Like the wind that blows across the moor
All we need is each other
And like the eagles we will soar

Chorus
You are the call and I am the answer
You are the wish and I am the way
You the music - I the dancer
You are the night and I am the day
You are the night and I am the day

You and I are like two rivers
Run and fall down to the sea
When we meet we're lost forever
Lost forever, you and me

Lay your head upon my pillow
Let your heart beat close to mine
With no past and no tomorrow
Two hearts lost in space and time

HB

ok, but some corrections -- in the first verse

You called and I ran wild as the wind that blows across the moor All we needed is each other...

I do love this song! Thanks for reminding me -- I haven't sung it in a long time.

when I first learned it years ago I predicted it would be the hot folkie wedding tune -- good thing I'm not a betting person.

just a couple more corrections if you please (I have sung this at two weddings BTW; a lovely song).

CALL AND ANSWER by Phil Colclough

(You called and I ran)
Wild as the wind that blows across the moor
All we *need*? (needed sounds better) is each other
*With* the eagles we will soar

You and I are like two rivers
(that) Run and fall down to the sea

malcolm - as you may have gathered - our posts crossed.
Had I known that you (with your far superior knowledge of Mudcat)were dealing with the request , I would have saved myself the trouble.

No offence, Nutty!  I guessed that you were typing it up "live", so to speak, and didn't know that I'd already dealt with it.  I usually reload a thread before sending if I've done the same, so as to avoid duplicating information.  Seriously, a search is usually quicker than typing lyrics, so it's never a wasted effort trying one first, and it does make subsequent searching simpler if songs are only posted once each.

All the best

Malcolm

Reg: Call and the answer.

Excellent, and thanks alot for your entries concerning the song " Call and the answer".

Great to receive the text. I shall endeavor to deliver this song soon in some smelly, smoky Irish Pub around Münich and southern Bavaria.

I would still love to get some more info. on the songwriter himself. If he has written such classics, surely he must have another few songs up his sleeve? How about recordings?

By the way, it seems I confused my e-mail and website addresses some:

The e-mail address is:

I have been playing in the "Irish Folk Pub" since it started in 1977. You could almost say I´m part of the furniture.

It´s situated in Giesela/Kaulbachstr. They only have live music on Thursdays and I usually play on the last Thursday of the month. My next gig there is on Thursday 26th. April.

Looking forward to meeting you. Please introduce yourself and we´ll have a bit of a chat!

John

Phil Colclough is part of DeDannan - and there are several recordings -- I believe most on Green Linnet records (ok, so i'm not certain of that- but the ones I have are!!) The Call and the Answer is on the CD "Jacket of Batteries. And yes, there are more by Phil.

Hi John,

great to read you here :o)

I got two beautiful tapes of your singing from Stephan (he told me that he informed you about the possible gig at Solingen).

Anyone want to help me be lazy and post the tabs? I have the PDF of the melody line and can pull it off, but I am wondering if anyone has the chord structure. Save a busy man some time.

All the best,

Mick

The tune is vaguely reminiscent of Khachaturian's "Sabre Dance", which just about nobody living in the developed world in the middle of the20th century could have avoided hearing.
