What a fine song. apparantly he started the first folk club in stoke in 1960 and was later a member of the critics group Phil Colclough (11 January 1940 - 23 September 2019[1]) was an English contemporary folk singer and songwriter.
His best known works, co-written with his wife, June Colclough (1941 – 12 October 2004), are "Song for Ireland" and "The Call and the Answer".

June and Phil Colclough both came from North Staffordshire, England, and both had careers in education. Phil had been a navigator in the Merchant Navy,[2] which provided source material for some of his songs. The Colcloughs founded the first folk music club in Stoke-on-Trent in 1960.

In 1966, they moved to London, where they were members of the Critics Group led by Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger; they eventually left the group due to bitter disputes stemming from MacColl's "authoritarian tendencies".[3]

In the 1970s, the Colcloughs returned to North Staffordshire, where they produced a folk music radio program for BBC Radio Stoke.

"Song for Ireland"[4] was inspired by a trip the Colcloughs took to the Dingle Peninsula. Described as a "modern classic",[5] it has been recorded by numerous artists, including Enya, Dick Gaughan, Luke Kelly, Mary Black, Ralph McTell, Celtic Spirit, The Dubliners, Brendan Hayes and Damien Leith.

The tune is vaguely reminiscent of Khachaturian's "Sabre Dance", which just about nobody living in the developed world in the middle of the20th century could have avoided hearing.

Phil Colclough is part of DeDannan - and there are several recordings -- I believe most on Green Linnet records (ok, so i'm not certain of that- but the ones I have are!!) The Call and the Answer is on the CD "Jacket of Batteries. And yes, there are more by Phil.

I have been playing in the "Irish Folk Pub" since it started in 1977. You could almost say I´m part of the furniture.

It´s situated in Giesela/Kaulbachstr. They only have live music on Thursdays and I usually play on the last Thursday of the month. My next gig there is on Thursday 26th. April.

Great to receive the text. I shall endeavor to deliver this song soon in some smelly, smoky Irish Pub around Münich and southern Bavaria.

I would still love to get some more info. on the songwriter himself. If he has written such classics, surely he must have another few songs up his sleeve? How about recordings?

No offence, Nutty!  I guessed that you were typing it up "live", so to speak, and didn't know that I'd already dealt with it.  I usually reload a thread before sending if I've done the same, so as to avoid duplicating information.  Seriously, a search is usually quicker than typing lyrics, so it's never a wasted effort trying one first, and it does make subsequent searching simpler if songs are only posted once each.

The writer of Call and Answer is Phil Colclough - yes the gent who wrote Song For Ireland. I know very little about him so perhaps someone else can provide that info.

This would be a job for the very useful "Digitrad and Forum Search", which is on the main Forum page and which searches the Digital Tradition database and the enormous archive of discussion threads we have here.  If you were to type into it call and the answer, you would get a lot of references which would take a while to sift through, but Colclough would quickly find you two past discussions where the song has been posted:

Hi all folk freaks out there!

Great stuff going on in this space.

Played a gig recently and was asked for the text to the song "The call and the answer".

A Dubliners CD informs me it was written by someone called "Colclough". Would I be correct in assuming that this is the songwriter "Phil Colclough" the same man who wrote that gem "Song for Ireland"? If so, how can I acquire the text and how can I get more information on this artist?

Has he also made recordings?

Will appreciate any help on this.
