From: Snuffy

A friend at the folk club tonight asked if anyone could complete a song he learnt from his father, but he only knows the first verse and chorus. I thought I'd seen it in a (fairly) recent thread, but it doesn't appear to be on the forum or database, and a Google search revealed nothing. It goes:

Walking down the aisle
In that sort of way
You can get the wind up
When the organ starts to play

CHORUS
How do you feel
When you marry your ideal
Ever so goosie
Ever so goosie goo
Goosie goo

I can only remember the chorus as already quoted from radio broadcasts post WW2,but I think it was the sort of thing dance bands used to do with the members singing in unison, rather than with a featured singer, sort of Harry Roy, Roy Fox,Ambrose, era . Joe O. probably has it amongst his song books. Not in the skiffler repertoire I'm afraid!

And you haven't even heard the tune - one of those brain-sticky repetitive drivelly ones!

Since this thread appeared, I haven't got it out my head (except today when I passed the chocolate mine grotto in the mall, which has another of them). It isn't folk! It doesn't belong here! Please give me another tune!

I consulted a friend over the weekend who's good at this sort of thing but he couldn't remember any more either, except he thought it was "a little bit goosie" rather than"ever so" (I'm not convinced!).

The way I remember it is...
How do you feel when you marry your ideal?
Ever so goosey, goosey, goosey, goosey
How do you feel when the bells begin to peal?
Ever so goosey, goosey, goosey, goosey

Walking up the aisle, in a kind of daze
Do you get the wind up when the organ plays?

How do you feel when you marry your ideal
Ever so goosey, goosey, goosey, goosey
How do you feel when the parson's done the deal?
Ever so goosey, goosey, goosey, goosey

I heard this tune on one of the Jeeves & Wooster episodes. I've done some searching on the web and found that it's a popular tune from the UK from the 20's. In the J&W episode, there's a verse and chorus, but I was wondering if there are any more verses. I'm hoping that someone from the UK can help me. Thanks.

(by the way, it's the tune that goes "how do you feel when you marry your ideal? Ever so goosey goosey goosey goosey. It's a completely silly, almost stupid song that's stuck in my head. It's the episode where Bertie and Gussy Fink-Nottle pretend to be each other).

The National Library of Australia has the sheet music, but it is not viewable online, presumably because it is still under copyright protection. Their catalogue describes it thus:

EVER SO GOOSEY [music] : comedy fox-trot / Wright Butler & Raymond Wallace ; uke arr. by Harry J. Stafford. Sydney: Chappell & Co., c1929.

I remember this was actually sung by Hugh Laurie (Bertie) in one episode of Jeeves and Wooster. The tune and first bit of the chorus have stuck with me ever since, so it's nice to get a bit more of it here - thanks.

Catalogue information from the National Library of Australia;
Lyrics from the video at YouTube (see Mr Happy's link above).
I suspect there is a missing verse or two. It would be nice to see the sheet music.

EVER SO GOOSEY
Wright Butler & Raymond Wallace
Sydney : Chappell & Co., c1929
As performed by Ray Starita & His Ambassadors Band

How do you feel when you marry your ideal?
Ever so goosey, goosey, goosey, goosey.
How do you feel when the bells begin to peal?
Ever so goosey, goosey, goosey, goosey.
Walking up the aisle, in a kind of daze,

My parents had the old vinyl record of this in England in the 40s
I can remember it being played on their old gramophone that we had to wind up.
I remember the words and those previously written here are correct but I would still like the third verse if there is one.

Several clips on YouTube of Ray Starita and His Ambassadors Band performing this song, recorded in 1929. But like most numbers of this period, they're primarily instrumentals, with no more sung than what has been given above.

"I've read that Butler/Wallace were Australians."

I hope you're not making that inference based on the fact that the sheet music was published in Australia.

A lot of popular music from that era was published in the UK and in Australia, even though it mostly originated in Britain.

It's just that the National Library of Australia does better job than the British Library when it comes to having complete information in its catalogue, and it often makes images of sheet music viewable online, if the material is out of copyright. That's why I always look there first.
