Thank you to everyone responsible for this site.

I searched for this song in the data base and was very surprised not to find it. My high school sweetheart and her brother were avid folk preformers at a local coffee house (1967). This song her and I sang at school in a talent contest. She would have won had it not been for my lack of ability in vocals.

The words as I remember

Valdy, the Canadian singer, did this in a different version. I remember one of the lines was "or like ale without foam", a depressing image if ever there was one.

Another one was "Johnny, O dear Johnny, I do fear for your life'

One of the first folk records I ever bought was Peggy Seeger singing it. That would have been in about '67.
