Subject: Instrument Geek Thread Topic Needed
From: Bedubya
Date: 18 Apr 01 - 05:27 PM

As I scrolled down the thread topic page today, I noticed an acute shortage of hard-core musical intrument related threads. What gives here? Are all the instrument nerds on vacation? Solving society's problems, making moral statements and waxing philosophically are cool, but some of us can only be stimulated by those things we truly hold dear to our hearts - INSTRUMENTS! STRINGS! ACCESSORIES! We don't even have opinions on important shit! Tht's why we play guitar!

Problem is, I've been trying to think of a real topic and only coming up with stupid shit like:

Why are banjos round?

Somebody help me out here! Gotta be a picker or two with a little curiosity and a few brain cells left ou there! It's only Wednesday for God's sake!

HELP!

Bruce

Bruce there are a lot of them. (There might not be too many currently) but if you do a search on the word "Pickers" or "Guitar" or "G.A.S." or "strings", "chords", "alternate tunings", etc....you'll find lots of threads with far ranging discussions on everything from techniques, favorite instruments, tips, advice --you name it.

There is also a very large listing within the LINKS section of Mudcat (top of this page, 3rd item to the left at the far right of the menu) called INSTRUMENT RELATED. The links alone within that section should keep you busy.

We've covered lots of stuff, so perhaps there's a bit of a drought at the moment, but there are a number of hard core guitar nerds on this forum, and I am happy to be included as a member. No doubt someone will start a new thread soon, on some idiosyncracy concerning the guitar, or a new way to play a chord, or something do with alternate tunings, but we're in the minority around here.

Nevertheless welcome to the instrument nerd club!

Yes sir Bruce! I am a serious folk musician at your service.
Promise to post on my thread? You promise?
Okay, I'll get my crayons and construction paper out and draw up a serious music thread. Do you mind if it is in my style? I tend to navel gaze as I grow into becoming a musician so my topics may not be as technical as you would like but I'll do my best Sir Bruce!

Bonnie on an important mission

Okay Bruce.
Jumping on this "Bonnie bandwagon" I just posted a tip to another currently active thread about diminished chords. You can jump to it here. There is also other good stuff in that thread as well.

Anyone got a better idea?

So what's this 'gurney' business Spaw? You own medical problems seem to have been overshadowed of late by some scrawny yellow skinned (Although perhaps he's not yellow any more) shanty singer.

I guess you're doing reasonably fine or you woudln't be posting.

So how do you tune these gurney things? Do you string 'em like a hammered dulcimer?

Bert.

Ya' know Bert, we got way too many folks with medical problems don't we? I am so looking forward to having Barry back amongst us full time again. Like yourself, he has some great qualities but is often overlooked for hsi songwriting and I'll be damned but the lad didn't crank one out while waiting for a liver!!!! Barry was too near a thing, but we have a few others that are doing chemo and other treatments...........

Now back to the topic, which was about a shortage of threads on this TODAY, not a lack of them EVER, sheesh!!!

BW indicated a desire for MORE THREAD TITLES that would result in INSTRUMENT DISCUSSIONS. (Remember Hardi's "Going Limp" thread about bows?!?!?!?)

So lessee... OK! Shall we try some of the following?

  • Proper Pump Organ Maintenance

  • How Do YOU Use Gorilla Snot?

  • Help: Long Hair in Stringwinders

  • Time to Get Hairy Again

  • Deep Throat for Mike

  • So Are You Well Hung?

  • See me for details if you are unsure of these topics' content.

Can you get any geekier? If I own more than one does that make me a serious ocarina geekazoid? I wont mention that the first songs I learned to play on them were The beverly hillbillies and my three sons...

Thank you Susan! Thank you Susan.! Thank you Susan!

Shit gang! I know how to call up old threads and read them. It's the immediacy of addressing the issue at hand in a current thread that's fun. If I have a serious question, I'll hit the old threads. They're great for education, but not for entertainment!

Now, repeat after me, "Do not take anything Bedubya ever posts on the Mudcat at face value. He has a warped since of humor. He is full of shit. He is no relation to that other Dubya guy, who is also full of shit."

It reminds me of my old college professor who once told our class that if he ever came to class wearing a spin-around bow-tie with blinking red lights we could take everything that he said on that day dead seriously.

Maybe I should have titled this thread "Stupid Musical Instrument Questions and Their Improbable Answers!"

    Now, to answer Susan's questions:

    1) I quit pumping my organ when I got married again. 2) I always forget I bought Gorilla Snot until I find the jar under the sofa and it's too dried up to be used for anything. 3) Hair in tuners? Do like I did. Go bald! 4) Would you please repeat the question? 5) The little foam wind-baffles keep coming off and choking me. 6) Nunyadambidness! But all my guitars are "well-strung"!

    Happy Days

Maybe I should have titled this thread "Stupid Musical Instrument Questions and Their Improbable Answers!" Why are banjos round? Is Susan the only one out there who recognizes this as too stupid a question to deserve a serious answer? They're round because if they were triangular they'd be banjo-likas!

    Now, to answer Susan's questions:

OK. In response to your post:

Time to Get Hairy Again? Yes, have to rehair because Hardi's gone limp again. (I should have titled that one "When Sally Got Hairy" but it was too late by the time I thought of it.)

Deep Throat for Mike. Although some acoustic situations call for eating the mike, as you have experienced, there are certain risks involved.

So Are You Well Hung? I am sure you are a strappingly-endowed one at all times.

I'm glad Bert answered Chip with the picture of Cleigh! Yes Chip. Ocarina is spoken here although your search didn't show it. You should have been looking under "Joys of Blowing Up A Possum's Ass."

We have discussed the idea of practicing in the bathroom and I just saw a commercial for the "Potty Putter".....a little practice club and green mat with cup and twoo golf balls for practicing your putting game while dropping a load and I wondered if this worked out would you have to carry a john around the course with you and drop trou every time you putted?

This of course made me wonder if practice in the bathroom would make you want to crap every time you played in public.........I think it may be worth investigating.

Accordion players: What to do when your neighbors try to have you evicted for causing a public nuisance. (A perennial, that one.)

Has your family disowned you now that you've come out about your accordion playing? Accordions and the law: Know your rights.

Accordion players: Tips for traveling through Ohio. A. Never take requests for Polkas. (No matter how much they plead and beg.)
    B. People from Ohio know of only two songs. One is 'Lady of Spain' and the other isn't. Again, no matter how much they plead and beg...

Is it really true Larrivees explode in Australia?

If I string up with Elixirs will they still be in perfect condition in 100 years time?

If my cat performed "inappropriate evacuation" in my bodhran will this improve the tone?

Can I catch nvCJD from the neck joint in my guitar?

Can I mount an Aussie-Amish Moustache Pitchfork tuner directly under the bridge of my tiple?

When a plectrum falls on the floor why does it disappear forever? Or has it somehow fallen into hyperspace? (Perhaps BruceO can answer this one?)

Why is it always D strings that break first on a guitar (OK on MY guitar!)

How can you prevent the flute player sitting next to you dripping spit from the end of his flute into your pint of beer during a session?

Assuming all the Seagulls in the world have just been sold, what cheap but good guitar should I buy?

If five banjo players all eventually managed to get their instruments in tune in a session what would they do next?

What key should I tune my tuneable bodhran to?

What brand works best for a lagerphone ...Fosters or Castlemain 4X?

Come to think of it, I think all of the questions have already been answered in some of the threads 'Spaw listed! Sorry about that!
