Another blue Saturday Night. In my younger days I would be out playing music with friends, or visiting a local coffee house, but now all that has changed. What has changed? I'm lost and cannot find my way back. Last Saturday night I found myself wondering around Wal*Mart, walking the isles not buying a thing, just looking for someone to talk too. Why Mal*Mart? It's safe, open all night, and it is the only place that I could go and not be criticized. Lest I get you totally depressed, I am in the company of two wonderful artists, Gillian Welch and David Rawling. I love those kids, their CD's have brought me many hours of joy. So I'll dim the light and let Gillian Welch sing me to sleep.

I hope your Saturday night was full of joy with friends and good music.

I'm home alone too Lloyd but I'm enjoying the solitude. No messy, noisy, hungry, young men rumbling around. Where do you live? Maybe we can find you a playmate or two. Or you can take in my nephew and his friends for a week or two. Sleep well, Mary

Look around for stuff to do - I host gohst tours in Orlando, FL on Saturdays and have a lot of fun doing it!

There's stuff to do if you look - call up a friend and go play mini golf at the very least.

take care

Hi Lloyd. Whew, sounds a bit grim, but there's not a soul here who hasn't been there. I could tell you about the Christmas I spent at a movie and a restaurant but that would REALLY be depressing! Happens during those times when you're disconnected, and it hurts like hell...but we get connected again eventually and times like this just become a memory.

Now, as to Walmart... I think that's a great place to hang when you're feeling crappy. Don't know if you're the type to get a conversation going with a stranger or not...I can now, quite easily actually, but I was pretty shy for a long while. Used to do the same thing occasionally with the Airport substituting for Walmart. Toughest for me was travelling through countries where NO English was spoken..you can feel pretty alone.

Anyway Gillian and David are pretty good company of the recorded kind, and THIS WILL PASS. Glad you shared it though. Mudcat is good for a lot of things, and letting your musical friends know how things are going is ONE of them.(in my opinion anyway)

Cheers guy

Rick

Out in the sticks where I am now living, they roll up the sidewalks at sundown. They close the fast-food places at eleven. By midnight, there is little left besides an all-night gas station and WalMart. Some nights I have actually hung out in both of them. Oh, but on one adventuresome night I went to the carwash!!! WOWIE-E-E-E-E!

Thanks for all the "pick me ups". We moved to Western North Carolina, my wifes home town. This was to be my retirment, but it turns out that I am an "Outsider", and a folk singer in Bluegrass country. I found that folks down here do not get together to play music, they are all in "Bands". So I joind a band. I play the double bass for the "Pisgah Pilgrams". We play in churchs and Nursing Homes, that leaves Saturday nights for Wal*Mart, and of course because I play twice a week I should be home working around the house on Saturday Nights, after all "enouph is enouph". Which leads me to the question, who much is enouph? I can't seam to get enouph music in my life. I am driven. Does anyone else share this feeling.

Lloyd, doesn't Opal sing with you anymore? We all loved hearing the two of you in oour cyber sing circles. we do those in PalTalk now. Let me know if you want the skinny on that and I'll help you out with getting it set up.

When I was growing up, it was traditional for my mom and dad to be gone out on Saturday nights playing for dances and stuff like that.

Thanks Kat, I got my Cookie back, I feel healed. No Opal dose not sing anymore, she says she dose not have time and I should not have time either. Last month I took her to a Gig and the folks loved her. I thought that would get her interested back but it had a negitive effect, she felt as it took her away from her work at home. The band I'm in would like her to sing, but she has no interest, and thats ok if I was alloed to continue, but thats not the case. Some times I feel like giving my insturments to my kids and giving up. but I won't. I will follow my dream to my grave, I will never give up. My health? I'm on cancer watch, so far so good, but it has slowed me down and changed a few things in my life that I'm not happy about, but music can and does fill many voids in our life.

It's now 1:00 Am, time to turn in, will check the thread in the morning.

Love to all, Keep playing and singing.

Good to see ya got yer cookie back, Lloyd. I am sorry to hear that Opal doesn't want to sing anymore. Good for you for keeping on with anyway. My dad is still playing at nursing homes and he just turned 84. I think the day he has to quit doing that will be the day he gives up and dies.

For those of you who may not know our Lloyd or need a refresher, please read the newspaper article I posted about him in THIS THREAD.

Tomorrow, when I have more time, I will link some of Lloyd's stories to this thread. They are priceless, heartfelt descriptions of how music has touched his life, and through him, the lives of others.

G'night, Lloyd. See ya tomorrow, darlin'

Good Morning, Lloyd. Thought about you all night. Maybe you can sing and play for Mudcatters on Paltalk Saturday nights. Are you anywhere near MattR? If you are willing to learn a few Oasis tunes (or am I out of date?, you two can jam...or not. Smile Love. You are here for a reason. Find your reason for being and all will be well.

Good words, Sins, some our Lloyd may have said himself if one of us was in need.

I went looking for some of his old stories and remembered that I had to search on "Lloyd61," his original "handle."*bg* Anyway, I would urge anyone who is just meeting Lloyd for the first time, to do a Forum Search, in the Quick Links, by putting in Lloyd61 and/or LLoyd62 and just read what he's offered here in wonderful stories.

Just to whet your whistle, check these ones out:

Hi Lloyd. Re: getting enough music in your life...and being driven.

Yes SIR. I love playing so much, that not a day goes by without at least a couple of hours on one or more of the thirty instruments down the basement. The great dichotomy in my life is that although I've been a professional for over thirty years, I HATE the "biz" part of the music biz. All the crap you have to do with promoting, publicising, yada yada...even recording (which is like going to the dentist for me)

I do as much of that stuff as I have to to earn a living, but I play 'cause it's in my heart...period. Glad to hear your doin' some band things.

keep on pickin'

Rick

Kat: I'm getting a "Content-length: 0" error on that "THIS THREAD" link above...

Hi Lloyd,

Pleased to Meetcha! I'm fairly new around here, but I can sympathise with your feelings about Sat Nights and being driven around the music. Add to that a feeling of being incredibly shy/self-conscious about performing for/with others and that's me most of the time.

I think it's wonderful that you could stop in here and let the people who care about you know how you were feeling. That's encouraging. Thankyou!

best regards,

~ Jande (who is now going off to read those stories of yours Kat posted)

Thanks, Jande. The link I'd posted was through the "ragtime" server, which has some problems, so I just switched it to "loki" and it works for me. Please let me know if you have any more problems with it.

Hey, Lloyd. Where are you in WNC? My home is in Arden and although I love Bluegrass, there is plenty of other types and styles here and lots of pickers to jam with. One jam I attend every other Friday night is very good and anyone is welcome for any kind of music.

Send me a PM and maybe we can get together. Jeep Man

Lloyd, I just read some of the threads about you and written by you, which Kat had listed.

You seem to be very well educated and write beautifully. Would I be close in guessing that you live in or around Laurel Park? Jim

Lloyd — great to see you back on the 'Cat. It's been a long time and I gave up trying to stay in touch after several PMs went unanswered.

Sorry to hear Opal isn't singing any more — you two were great together.

Have the song circles at the Coffee Grinder fallen apart. I really enjoyed the one we had and the one I went to while you were in the hospital. That would be a real loss if they've ended.

Also sorry I won't be headed home for a while so we could get together to swap a few tunes. Maybe in the fall.

Keep on keeping on, buddy — the music makes it worthwhile and I know you still have so much to give.

cheers,

david
