Subject: RE: Sinead singing folk songs From: GeorgeH Date: 25 May 01 - 12:51 PM Clinton, thanks for that short blast of common sense . . . To add my 2 cents - whatever you sing, in whatever style - sing it as though you mean it, or don't bother! Have a great holiday, one and all! G. |
Subject: RE: Sinead singing folk songs From: GUEST,D_hand Date: 25 May 01 - 11:12 AM Personally I think she could sing the telephone directory and make it sound sweet |
Subject: RE: Sinead singing folk songs From: WyoWoman Date: 25 May 01 - 09:05 AM Welp, I'm classically trained and have done lots o' classical choral music, musical theater, jazz, etc. and have also sung in a rock band, done country and love to do unaccompanied tunes from Appalachia, as well as whatever folk and traditional songs suit my fancy -- and my voice. I use a different "voice" for almost every one of them. I'd sound pretty damned goofy doing an operatic version of "Blue Ridge Mountains," and also pretty dumb doing "How Long Has This Been Going On" with a down-home twang. It'd be boring as hell to be sentenced to singing one kind of music all the time. Some of them work better than others, but I sing different types of music just because I love a great song. And if I find one I love, I sing it in the way that seems most appropriate to that song. Sometimes I probably fall flat on my face, and no doubt Sinead does as well. But that's part of the process of being an actual artist, as opposed to, say, a parrot. ww |
Subject: RE: Sinead singing folk songs From: GUEST,Rana Date: 25 May 01 - 08:10 AM Also depends on what the definition of folk is - that can of worms, maybe her style doesn't do well with "traditional folk" (whatever is meant by that). However, on the first track of the Afro-Celt Music System's second CD she is guest vocalist, and the track, I think, is superb. But then some might not consider this "folk" - "world-fusion" or "roots" maybe. They are, however, listed in the new BBC web though (so it must be :-)). Rana |
Subject: RE: Sinead singing folk songs From: Clinton Hammond Date: 25 May 01 - 07:18 AM Remember though folks... There's nothing more subjective than taste... And there is no good or bad in art... only like or dislike... ;-) |
Subject: RE: Sinead singing folk songs From: Brigie Date: 25 May 01 - 07:00 AM A Lot of good points........but coming from Dublin, she will have the "soul" of Irish folk songs in her blood.I thinnk she is an amazing artist and it is a great compliment to her that she is so versatile. As you have all brought up examples to show how good / bad you all thought of her renditions, have you heard her singing Raglan Road? Wipe me out! |
Subject: RE: Sinead singing folk songs From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 25 May 01 - 06:12 AM i havent heard her sing folk, but a few years ago i heard her sing silent night in gaelic which was very good |
Subject: RE: Sinead singing folk songs From: GUEST,Adolfo Date: 25 May 01 - 04:50 AM I quite agree with those who don't like Sinead doing folk. I think she overacts in Foggy Dew or Skibbereen, perhaps under the instructions of Paddy Moloney. Perhaps too much Dubliners in my (t)ears... |
Subject: RE: Sinead singing folk songs From: Mad Tom Date: 24 May 01 - 06:48 PM I've always wondered about "Jackie-O" (one of my faves by her) - It gives me the impression that you want to step aside and don't cross her. |

Subject: RE: Sinead singing folk songs From: GUEST,Graham O'Callaghan Date: 24 May 01 - 04:04 PM In response to a couple of points raised by this question and attached threads. Sinead O'Connor has a particular style of delivery which doesn't suit all songs in very much the same way that many traditional singers make poor attempts at broadening their repetoire by singing ill chosen songs. I have heard her sing meltingly moving renditions of traditional material as well as an occasional unaccompanied renditions of her her own self penned material. She recorded her song "In This Heart" on her Universal Mother album a few years ago and I was so enchanted by the song that it is the title track off my recent album. The second point that I would like to make concerns the issue of "classical sings traditional". There are a number of performers both musicians and singers who were initially trained in classical techniqiues but who have moved on into the tradition. Most of these performers, myself included, would say that some knowledge of style and discipline can actually enhance a "traditional" performance. Certainly in the case of singers, it does help to have an insight into projection, posture, breating techniques and pronounciation as it helps with the songs interpretation and the ability for an audience to actually understand the words. many of us were in fact attracted to traditional song because of our earlier experiences with classical folk song arrangements and people like Britten, V-Williams and Elgar ought be congratulated for their contribution.

Subject: RE: Sinead singing folk songs From: Clinton Hammond Date: 24 May 01 - 04:02 PM I have to say this... of all the versions I've heard of "Stretched On Your Grave", hers is my least favorite... but I certainly don't hate it... Or a little 'genre hopping' from time to time... |
Subject: RE: Sinead singing folk songs From: Maryrrf Date: 24 May 01 - 03:47 PM In general I don't like it when pop performers do traditional or folk. What I really don't like is when classically trained people do traditional - I find that usually they are focusing much more on technique than the emotion and the story. It's just a different style of singing, I guess. For me, traditional singing is about the song, and not the performer. You aren't showing off your voice, you aren't showing off your technique - you are the vehicle for the melody and the story. Having said that, I haven't heard it but I was told that Sinead did a very lovely version of "The Foggy Dew". |
Subject: RE: Sinead singing folk songs From: Kim C Date: 24 May 01 - 03:43 PM I dunno... she does a great version of Skibbereen and also Foggy Dew (the Irish uprising one, not the Burl Ives one). I think she has a haunting quality about her that fits these particular songs. |
Subject: RE: Sinead singing folk songs From: SINSULL Date: 24 May 01 - 03:38 PM Heard/saw her sing "Danny Boy" and had pretty much the same reaction. |
Subject: Sinead singing folk songs From: beachcomber Date: 24 May 01 - 03:33 PM I've just been listening to a "live" recording of Sinead O'Connor singing "The Spinning Wheel" on John Kelly's Radio RTE 1 show "Mystery Train". I thought it was not good, she seemed to divest the lyric of all real emotion and no sense whatsoever of story telling. She seemed too, to render the beautiful melody featureless, I really think she is not as versatile a performer as she imagines herself to be. Monotony , was the principal mood that came across. Am I blaming her for a bad day or what does anyone else think.? Beach.
