I use a different "voice" for almost every one of them. I'd sound pretty damned goofy doing an operatic version of "Blue Ridge Mountains," and also pretty dumb doing "How Long Has This Been Going On" with a down-home twang. It'd be boring as hell to be sentenced to singing one kind of music all the time. Some of them work better than others, but I sing different types of music just because I love a great song. And if I find one I love, I sing it in the way that seems most appropriate to that song. Sometimes I probably fall flat on my face, and no doubt Sinead does as well. But that's part of the process of being an actual artist, as opposed to, say, a parrot. ww |

However, on the first track of the Afro-Celt Music System's second CD she is guest vocalist, and the track, I think, is superb. But then some might not consider this "folk" - "world-fusion" or "roots" maybe. They are, however, listed in the new BBC web though (so it must be :-)). Rana |

Sinead O'Connor has a particular style of delivery which doesn't suit all songs in very much the same way that many traditional singers make poor attempts at broadening their repetoire by singing ill chosen songs. I have heard her sing meltingly moving renditions of traditional material as well as an occasional unaccompanied renditions of her her own self penned material. She recorded her song "In This Heart" on her Universal Mother album a few years ago and I was so enchanted by the song that it is the title track off my recent album. The second point that I would like to make concerns the issue of "classical sings traditional". There are a number of performers both musicians and singers who were initially trained in classical techniqiues but who have moved on into the tradition. Most of these performers, myself included, would say that some knowledge of style and discipline can actually enhance a "traditional" performance. Certainly in the case of singers, it does help to have an insight into projection, posture, breating techniques and pronounciation as it helps with the songs interpretation and the ability for an audience to actually understand the words. many of us were in fact attracted to traditional song because of our earlier experiences with classical folk song arrangements and people like Britten, V-Williams and Elgar ought be congratulated for their contribution.

What I really don't like is when classically trained people do traditional - I find that usually they are focusing much more on technique than the emotion and the story. It's just a different style of singing, I guess. For me, traditional singing is about the song, and not the performer. You aren't showing off your voice, you aren't showing off your technique - you are the vehicle for the melody and the story. Having said that, I haven't heard it but I was told that Sinead did a very lovely version of "The Foggy Dew". |

Subject: Sinead singing folk songs From: beachcomber Date: 24 May 01 - 03:33 PM I've just been listening to a "live" recording of Sinead O'Connor singing "The Spinning Wheel" on John Kelly's Radio RTE 1 show "Mystery Train". I thought it was not good, she seemed to divest the lyric of all real emotion and no sense whatsoever of story telling. She seemed too, to render the beautiful melody featureless, I really think she is not as versatile a performer as she imagines herself to be. Monotony , was the principal mood that came across. Am I blaming her for a bad day or what does anyone else think.? Beach.
