Fellow Fred Fans: Accordingg to my Chicago Aural Tradition newsletter, Fred's two albums, "plus additional material," will be coming out on a double CD this summer. The newsletter said something like, late June?

Hopefully your local folk radio show will get a review copy and someone will carry it. I think Fred is in the Chicago phone book, but he might not thank me for swamping him with calls.

anybody else know more about this? Art?

Ah, Fred!!!

Will he distribute through a vendor that gives Mudcat a cut? (See the current thread on Bookmarks to Support Mudcat.)

MaryAnn, thanks for mentioning this !!!

I wish I knew more but all I know is what I read in that same newsletter. I'm glad to see that it's happening for sure. Fred Holstein was the king of Wells Street and Lincoln Avenue's folk scenes in Chicago during the 70s and '80s. A great sing-along song leader with a wonderful songbag to choose from. Fred and Ed Holstein and Jim Craig and yours truly (and many others over the years--Fleming Brown & Giini Clemmens among 'em) did our annual Woody Guthrie birthday concert every July at Hol;stein's---the boys great folk club in that city. (I hope the jewel box has a scratch-'n-sniff capability so when you pick at it you'll be able to smell the Earl Of Old Town's back room at 5:00 A.M. Sunday morning after Utah Phillips and Fred have finished four sets each. ;-) All the singers in town would be hanging out there after our gigs at clubs that closed earlier (3:00 A.M.)

It was an incandescent time (as Gamble Rogers used to say). The only place to be back then.

Nobody deserves to have his fine early musical endeavors issued on CD more than my old friend Fred Holstein. I hope he sells a million of 'em; and I know that he will!!! We who were there have missed hearing Fred on a regular basis in these latter years. But now whole new generations will be able to hear him too.

Freddy, if you're around lurking, we love ya ! And give my best to Ed and Allan.

Art Thieme

I copied this in from a newer thread, and marked that thread as duplicate. Thanks, WYSIWYG, for digging this one up.

I don't know what happened to the previous thread on this; I started it myself, and it's just not there now, but anyway here's the info some of you did want:

I ordered the double CD rerelease of Fred' 2 albums, "plus additional material," by finding a link on the Midnite Special playlist archives (WFMT Chicago). The link took me to "CD Baby," which apparently handles indies. I'm looking forward to hearing even tho' (or maybe because of) I've pretty much worn out my LPs.

Hey Chicagoans, as long as we are talking ChiTown, Hardi and I will be there for a couple of weeks, soon. Last time we were not able to visit much, but this time we can-- so please e-mail (NOT PM) if you care to hook up.

Erg, I forgot to mention that the link was in the June 16 Midnite Special playlist.

Also, If you are in or near Chicago, Jim Craig carries it at Hogeye Music in Evanston, Val's Halls in Oak Park, and one other place I wasn't familiar with.

Thanks for digging out the earrleir thread; why couldn't I find it?

I think I found it with:

... in the filter. After Forum Search found lotsa Holsteins in thread bodies but not in the titles.

OK, I've got my *Fred Holstein, a Collection* in my hot little hands. It contains all of his two albums, plus an interview excerpt used as intros, and -- this is the great part -- lots of songs from the last performance at Holstein's Folk Club. Some I heard very often and am glad to have a recording of; some I never heard Fred sing -- Don Lange's song about his grandfather (Here's to you Rounders), Dona Dona, The Silver Run -- it's just too great.

Oh, and the other place you can get it in Chicago is the Old Town School, of course.

Oh, and August 4, there will be another live concert before the Midnight Special on WFMT radio Chicago; this time of Lee Murdock. (Advance notice for those of you who were sad to miss the Mike Cross concert. I couldn't find anything about it being archived on the MS site.)

Wish I could say I gotta go practice, but the truth is, I gotta go to bed 'cause tomorrow's a work day.

I got my Fred Holstein CD from Dick Greenhaus at CAMSCO a couple of days ago, and I really enjoy it. Fred has a website, http://www.fredholstein.com, but I think it's nice to order from Dick so a cut goes to Mudcat.
