So, the Nepalese Royal Family were killed by "accident." Yeah, in much the same way the Tsar Nicholas II and his family were "accidentally" killed in 1917. "I Didn't Know the Gun was Loaded" seems an appropriate song about now.

I don't know about anyone else but loaded automatic weapons don't normally feature in my place settings...

I'm reminded of...

Passerby:(to the Duke of Wellington) "I believe that you are Mr Smith" The Duke of Wellington: "If you will believe that sir, you will believe anything!"

It's not an excuse they could have used in the past

"I'm sorry guv, I was holding this kukri and it went off in my hands"
I think not.

Regards

Walrus

Kendall, that reminds me of a classic bit from National Lampoon, reporting on the "suicide" of an unpopular political tyrant (it may even have been Allende) to this effect:

"An autopsy revealed that President X had committed suicide by shooting himself with an automatic weapon from 60 feet away, pausing only once to reload..."

Yeah, by shooting himself in the head - twice! No, but seriously, folks. I have a friend who says This is what comes of arranged marriages. I think This is what comes of bad manners plus guns. Yikes.

Luckily, not even the Nepalese apparently believe the cover story being put out. And it's not, as said above, as if our own gubmint isn't prone to telling stories their way...

they have now gone through three rulers in the last five days...

the crown prince simply lost his temper, blew them all away, and ratherthan face a public execution, killed himself.

Not all that different from the headlines in our own country, if you think about it.

Always remember and don't ever forget:

Guns Don't Kill People; Emotionally Unstable Monarchs with Guns Kill People.

What was that line from That's My Bush, when "Charlton Heston" said Guns don't kill people! Bullets kill people! Guns just help the bullets go really, really fast!

A tragedy has happened, and your jokes are not in good taste. Laugh if you must, but spare a thought for the dead too.. People kill people, guns are merely an implement to achieve it. One cant help but grieve for more sensless violence; courtesy of the world media circus who would rather shove violence down your throat than something positive. Yours, Aye. Dave (my condolences to the people of Nepal)

Dave What occurred was certainly not a joke. It certainly was not senseless violence, but served the purpose of getting "uncle" the top job in Nepal. The black humor lies in the explanation...."the dog ate my homework" category. Larry

Oh, Ancient, if I grieved properly at every loss on this poor tortured planet, I would never have time to do anything else. I don't think anybody was making light of the situation; we were rebutting the idea that the media/govt. would expect us to accept their horsedivot interpretation of a sad situation. Different, I submit.

That story ranks right up there with the one from several years ago in one of our northern states. A fellow was found with multiple hammer blows to the head and the local coroner ruled it a suicide!

Unfortunately, most of the news outlets that reported the bizarre "accident" explanation are not reporting the clarification released by the uncle after Dipendra died. Apparently, since Dipendra was technically king while in the coma, the uncle was legally constrained from making any criticism of the sovereign, such as, oh, say, calling him a murderer.

Now, given those constraints, should he probably have simply kept his mouth shut until after Dipendra was dead? In retrospect, it seems pretty obvious that he should have. But before we shake our heads and go *cluck* *cluck* at those silly, naive third-worlders, we'd do well to remember that we aren't the ones living under a freshly-minted constitutional monarchy that was absolute until what--11 years ago? They've still got some pretty goofy vestigial laws and customs where the monarchy's concerned. But hell, so does the UK, and they've been constitutional for a lot longer.

For me, all that really matters in this, though, is that I have a friend from Nepal who's a student at USD, and he's sick with worry 'cause he still can't get in contact with his brother or his wife and children.

Chris

This morning's paper gives a "fuller" story that implies that the young man simply went nuts. I tend to believe it, as a real Palace coup would have been handled a lot neater, and most certainly would have involved the Military. Since there's precident for that kind of thing, the explanations would have been a lot clearer right from the beginning.

Hi "Your's Aye Dave. I hear ya guy. You're right. I saw the various pictures of the Royal family, and being a bit of a smug North American, couldn't help but notice that some of them looked like Peter Sellers playing Indian characters. Sometimes it's easy to see foreign folk with their uniforms and "gingerbread" as "quaint", and sometimes we make silly jokes (Gawd knows I do). If it had happened in Toronto, I probably would have taken it more seriously...'but a life is a life, ain't it? Anyway, you quickly made me think of the terror those folks went through...no matter WHAT the eventual results of any enquiry might show. Guess I'll probably still make inappropriate jokes at times....but you made me think.

Rick

Rick. Guess I just like the people of Nepal, and saw it differently than most. I remember two ships sinking in the same storm in the Gulf Of St. Lawrence; 54 sailors died. Had they been North Americans or Europeans they would have received media attention for months. As it was they were mostly third world sailors; and accordingly it is a little known, or remembered event. I appreciate seeing the humour in things (even bad things) we use it (dark humour) a lot to help reduce stress in my job. When Prince Charles divorce was announced. I said "how very sad for them both, and their children" Which was a surprise for the jokers around me at the time too! Chris. I hope your friends family are ok; but I'm sure the people of Nepal will react appropriately in these circumstances. Yours, Aye. Dave
