I believe you are referring to "Wings" by Brian Bedford of the acapella group Artisan. Others have covered the song though

If it is Brian's song you are looking for - try Artisan's webpage - it may have lyrics or at least you can e-mail a request for the words. http://www.artifact.demon.co.uk/index.htm

For those of you who might not quite have got Tim's reference to the Coyotes (an a capella folk group now based in Phoenix, having moved there from Winnepeg where its either too cold or too hot or too mosquitoed to sing without accompaniment), he means the following site

I've looked and I don't have that track. You might try contacting Artisan Direct they are really nice people. You can contact them at :-

ARTISAN@ARTIFACT.DEMON.CO.UK

or go to their web page at :-

A lot depends on why you want the words, for personal reasons (in which case they will tell you which CD it's on, and offer to sell it to you mail order). Or for performance in which case they will discuss a fee.

I hoe this is of some use to you.

WHAT'S THE USE OF WINGS
(Brian Bedford)

I could have been a giant, said the bonsai tree
But someone bound my roots and held me down
I could have reached the heavens, said the snowy owl
But they clipped my wings and kept me on the ground
I think I heard them tell me they loved me
They'd care for me, without them I would die
What's the use of roots if you can`t spread them
What's the use of wings if you can't fly

I could have been a singer, said the minor bird mynah bird
But they caged me and they told me what to say
I could have run forever, said the pony
But they bridled me and made me go their way
I think I heard them tell me they loved me
They'd care for me forever, so it seemed
What's the use of voices without freedom
What's the use of living others' dreams

Why do people cage those things they love the most
Is it simply that they fear to be alone
If you give your love its freedom it will stay awhile
If it leaves you it was never yours to own

I could have found adventure, said the angel fish
Now my world's so small there's nowhere I can go
I could have ruled a kingdom, said the lion
But the world inside my head is all I know
I think I heard them tell me they loved me
They'd care for me and it would be all right
What's the use of life without adventure
What's the use of strength if you can't fight

Why do people cage those things they love the most
Is it simply that they fear to be alone
If you give your love its freedom it will stay awhile
If it leaves you it was never yours to own

As sung by Iain MacKintosh

Pleasure! I've been collecting song lyrics and backgrounds to songs for ages, particularly Scottish and English ones, mainly by soloists, so if there's anything else you're looking for maybe I can help. As I've got them in the database all I have to do is to add a little HTML. (However, I managed to crash my computer last night ...) - Susanne

What's The Use of Wings?

"I could have been a giant" said the bonsai tree
"But someone bound my roots and held me down."
"I could have reached the Heavens" said the snowy owl
"But they clipped my wings and kept me on the ground."

"I think I heard them tell me that they loved me

But what's the use of roots if you can't spread them?
What's the use of wings if you can't fly?"

"I could have been a singer" said the Myna bird

"I could have run forever" said the pony
"But they bridled me and made me go their way."

"I think I heard them tell me that they loved me

"I could have found adventure" said the angelfish
"Now my world's so small there's nowhere left to go."
"I could have ruled a kingdom" said the lion
"Now this land inside my head is all I know."

"I think I heard them tell me that they loved me
That they'd care for me, and tell me it's alright
But what's the use of life without adventure?
What's the use of strength if you can't fight?"

Why do people cage the things they love the most?
Is it simply that they fear to be alone?
If you give your love its freedom, it will stay awhile

I wasn't even aware of the other recordings. I only know it as an Artisan song (Hilary Spencer singing lead and Jacey and Brian Bedford adding their superb harmonies). Brian sure do write some fine songs.

Vin Garbutt, you say? Gotta track that one down.

This is a wonderful song, which had swept through the British folk scene like wildfire before I came to the States. Funnily enough I haven't heard it sung over here. Do any Mudcatters do it as part of their set?
Also nice to see the John Wright Band getting a mention there, Mbo. Their CD is great but live they are phenomenal.

Matt, the tune as I have heard it requires a Em in the second line rather than a Bm Also in the chorus, I would throw in a Bm after the D at the end of the first line before going up to G.

Great song, deserves to be better known. The author's name is "Brian" Bedford incidentally, although for all I know he may be known as "Bob" to his friends.

The Em works, but you can get a neat sound by replacing the Bm's with D/B's. I tried the Bm in the chorus, but it doesn't seem to work. You must remember that I figured these chords out for myself, 3 years ago, after hearing the version by The John Wright Band.

I've tried the Bm too and on second thoughts I agree it doesn't work. Better to do an ascending bass run (E, F#,G) on the bass E string.

There! I like that much better. John Wright, at the end of the song, does the last line G A G, then uses the G-F#-E bass run and ends on D.

Jeez, not a mention of the group. Brian Bedford (no relation to the actor so far as I know) is the prime songwriter as well as being 1/3 of the English a capella group "Artisan".

I've not been familiar with the other recordings mentioned, so it's nice to see; I'll keep an eye out for them.

Artisan often tours on this side of the pond, and I know they'll be in southern Ontario next winter (the White Oak Folk Club in Oakville, Ontario on Feb 9 for sure). A long wait, to be sure, but well worth it!

John Wright Band are still playing together but they are also doing some solo stuff. They have said that they will split after booking committments in Feb 2002. John has just returned from his first short visit to the east coast of U.S.A. which went very well. He toured with a very good Irish singer/song writer, Maurice Dickson. I am sure John will be planning another tour in the States in the future. I will let you know if and when he does.

Thanks for all this. I will give it a try tonight on the new ax.

I stand corrected re "Brian", my once perfect memory is now blown away by too much beer and chorus-singing :)

only query left is what is the sequence for the "bridge" section?

Why do people cage the things they love the most?
Is it simply that they fear to be alone?
If you give your love its freedom, it will stay awhile
If it leaves you, it was never yours to own

Actually my transpose down to G/Em/Am/D was pretty close

Sorry, I don't have the chords - I do it a capella. But here be the words:

What's The Use of Wings?
Brian Bedford

verse:

"I could have been a giant" said the bonsai tree, "But someone bound my roots and held me down."
"I could have reached the Heavens" said the snowy owl, "But they clipped my wings & kept me on the ground."
"I think I heard them tell me that they loved me, that they'd care for me--without them I would die
But what's the use of roots if you can't spread them? And what's the use of wings if you can't fly?"

"I could have been a singer" said the myna bird, "But they caged me and told me what to say."
"I could have run forever" said the pony, "But they bridled me and made me go their way."
"I think I heard them tell me that they loved me; that they'd care for me forever so it seems
But what's the use of voices without freedom? And what's the use of living other's dreams?"

bridge:

Why do people cage the things they love the most? Is it simply that they fear to be alone?
If you give you're love it's freedom, it will stay awhile. If it leaves you, it was never yours to own

"I could have found adventure" said the angel fish, "Now my world's so small there's nowhere left to go."
"I could have ruled a kingdom" said the lion, "Now this land inside my head is all I know."
"I think I heard them tell me that they loved me; that they'd care for me, and tell me it's alright
But what's the use of life without adventure? What's the use of strength if you can't fight?"

repeat bridge:

and end with:
"I think I heard them tell me that they loved me, that they'd care for me--without them I would die
But what's the use of roots if you can't spread them? And what's the use of wings if you can't fly?"

Genie, I kind of like the idea of a link to the thread you're posting to, has a kind of existentialist logic about it, but I think you meant to post a different link ??? *G* Murray

Right, Murray -- I posted the right link but posted it to the wrong thread (i.e., to itself!). Thanks for telling me.

Just been introduced to this wonderful rendition of a beautiful song. I am not much of a player but little of the above seems to make sense. I am clearly missing something albeit many years on. Thats not b minor is it ? on vins playing? And certainly some sort of dropped D or is it d model dadgad.
Be so lovely to be able to play the chords he actually played but so far no one seems to know. Maybe that's for the best I dont know.

Just a minor correction to the lyrics above. It's 'Mynah bird'. If you haven't heard of that bird look it up and the lyrics make even more sense

I also prefer to spell the word "mynah," but reference sources say that "myna" is also correct and appears to be the preferred spelling.

Wikipedia says Artisan was an English vocal harmony trio from Yorkshire, England, who sang a cappella from 1985 to 2005. They consisted of songwriter Brian Bedford, his wife Jacey Bedford, and Hilary Spencer.

The Digital Tradition lyrics are from the recording by the John Wright Band, but it would seem that Artisan would be the most accurate interpreter of a Brian Bedford song. The uncorrected Digital Tradition lyrics are on the left, and the lyrics from Artisan on the right, with differences highlighted in italics.

WHAT'S THE USE OF WINGS? (DT Lyrics)
(Brian Bedford)

"I could have been a giant" said the bonsai tree
"But someone bound my roots and held me down."
"I could have reached the Heavens" said the snowy owl
"But they clipped my wings and kept me on the ground."

"I think I heard them tell me that they loved me
That they'd care for me--without them I would die
But what's the use of roots if you can't spread them?
What's the use of wings if you can't fly?"

"I could have been a singer" said the Myna bird
"But they caged me and told me what to say."
"I could have run forever" said the pony
"But they bridled me and made me go their way."

"I think I heard them tell me that they loved me
That they'd care for me forever so it seems
What's the use of voices without freedom?
What's the use of living other's dreams?"

Why do people cage the things they love the most?
Is it simply that they fear to be alone?
If you give you're love it's freedom, it will stay awhile
If it leaves you, it was never yours to own

"I could have found adventure" said the angelfish
"Now my world's so small there's nowhere left to go."
"I could have ruled a kingdom" said the lion
"Now this land inside my head is all I know."

"I think I heard them tell me that they loved me
That they'd care for me, and tell me it's alright
But what's the use of life without adventure?
What's the use of strength if you can't fight?"

Why do people cage the things they love the most?
Is it simply that they fear to be alone?
If you give you're love it's freedom, it will stay awhile
If it leaves you, it was never yours to own

"I know I heard them tell me that they loved me
That they'd care for me, without them I would die
But what's the use of roots if you can't spread them?
What's the use of wings if you can't fly?"

This is from the album "Other Roads" by the John Wright Band.

The one really cringeworthy line in the Digital Tradition is "If you give you're love it's freedom, it will stay awhile." The ghost of my late mother the English teacher wouldn't let me allow that to pass by. And the one word I can't understand is - If it leaves you, it was never yours to own (could it be loan?)

Here's an interesting music video from another generation, by Jackie Oates and Megan Henwood: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s03uFdnwMi4

Hi, Dick - I don't think Brian Bedford recorded the song alone. He recorded it as part of Artisan, and they did it wonderfully.

Mudcatter threelegsoman did a very nice performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfeRzLyUdyk

I'm hoping to hear somebody sing this at the Mudcat Worldwide Singaround. I've been dropping hints. I love this song, but I don't think I can master it quickly.

Hi, Dick - I don't know of any other version that Brian Bedford recorded. He and his wife are two-thirds of Artisan, so I think that the Artisan recording IS Brian Bedford's recording.
