Subject: What's The Use of Wings? From: Genie Date: 17 Oct 01 - 01:11 AM Can someone post the tune to Brian Bedford's "What's The Use of Wings?" A MIDI would be great, but the chord pattern would help if no one can do a MIDI of it. Thanks, Genie

Subject: RE: Tune Req: What's The Use of Wings? From: Genie Date: 17 Oct 01 - 01:24 AM Now I think I'm losing it! Three minutes ago I saw two threads at the top of the list with the same title, apparently my two duplicate threads. Then I posted the note above. Then I went back to the forum home and saw only the one thread--the second one I posted, and the one I just asked everybody to ignore and Joe to delete! So this time, I'm asking Joe or a clone to delete this entry and the one above and leave the thread in its virginal state, since the other one isn't there. (Honestly, I am stone cold sober!) Genie

Subject: RE: Tune Req: What's The Use of Wings? From: Genie Date: 31 Oct 01 - 09:52 PM Sorcha, The MP3 I was able to get from the link you posted was only of the bridge of the song. Is there a place to get an MP3 of the whole song? Genie |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: What's The Use of Wings? From: harvey andrews Date: 03 Mar 02 - 09:24 AM well done Nutty..just what I was about to suggest. Then Brian can eat and write more of his wonderful songs! |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: What's The Use of Wings? From: Tig Date: 03 Mar 02 - 12:12 PM Didn't realise you were a Mudcat Harvey. Maybe we should persuade Brian to do more songbooks - with the tunes in them! Tig (aka Chris Ingram, Mrs Rincewynd) |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: What's The Use of Wings? From: Charley Noble Date: 03 Mar 02 - 01:29 PM Artisans are on tour in the states, and were well received at the Chocolate Church in Bath, Maine, last Thursday. We came away ladened with 4 more of their CD's. Check their website for current schedule. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: What's The Use of Wings? From: Genie Date: 03 Mar 02 - 03:26 PM Good idea, Nutty. I understand there are several folks who have recorded the song, but my preference would be to support the songwriter. Genie |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: What's The Use of Wings? From: Sooz Date: 04 Mar 02 - 02:00 PM I didn't like the way this thread was going until I got to Nutty's post. I reckon the least we can do if we want to appropriate a song is to buy the CD. Rocking at the end of time is a really good album and deserves buying. I've tried to persuade Brian to do a song book but I don't think he plans to. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: What's The Use of Wings? From: Genie Date: 05 Mar 02 - 12:11 AM Sooz, I agree that it's good to buy the CD's of folks whose songs you're interested in, but if I had to buy a whole CD every time I wanted to sing a copyrighted song--even if I'm not being paid for singing it--, I'd pretty soon have to stop singing copyrighted songs. If I am going to make a buck or two by singing a particular song, I'd prefer to pay the royalties or buy the sheet music than to shell out $20 up front for a CD just to get the tune without waiting for the song to be played on the radio again. I understand from comments at Mudcat that Brian Bedford's work is worth the investment in the CD--for its own sake, not just for that one song, but I don't always assume things like that. Several times I have bought an album because of a song I liked and found it was the only one on it I liked. BR>Also, sometimes I like a song but not the performer. In a case like that, I really don't want to have to buy a CD. I find it a little ironic to 'hear' the tone of comments like yours and Nutty's at a website that has a whole DT of lyrics and sometimes chords and MIDIS to hundreds (at least) of songs that are still under copyright--not to mention all the ones posted in threads. Are you really suggesting that we shouldn't "appropriate" a copyrighted song --e.g., sing it at a song circle, jam session, or open mike--unless we go out and buy a CD which contains it? Just wondering. §:-) |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: What's The Use of Wings? From: Murray MacLeod Date: 05 Mar 02 - 12:26 AM I can vouch for at least three instances of people I know who have bought CDs of Dougie McLean, purely on the strength of hearing me singing "Caledonia". At no point have I ever bought any of Dougie McLean's CDs. So what is the moral to be drawn? Murray |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: What's The Use of Wings? From: nutty Date: 09 Mar 02 - 02:36 AM Genie ....I please don't think I was having a go at you .....I suggested that you might buy the CD as we seemed to have covered all other lines of enquiry. People often ask for words, tunes etc. without having any idea who wrote a particular song or that it was available on Tape or CD. I was just trying to be helpful. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: What's The Use of Wings? From: Tig Date: 09 Mar 02 - 06:07 PM Brian DID release a song book - but it sold out very quickly. If enough people ask maybe it will be reprinted. Go to the Artisan site for details. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: What's The Use of Wings? From: Murrey Date: 09 Mar 02 - 11:41 PM Or you could just sing it unaccompanied and therefore would have no need for chords--Brian ' s songs stand well with only a voice to sing them .... Just my opinion ! Murrey |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: What's The Use of Wings? From: Genie Date: 10 Mar 02 - 03:47 AM Thanks for explaining that, Nutty. Murray, the chords aren't the problem for me. I don't remember the tune exactly, and when a song is not traditional, I don't like to let the folk process contaminate the tune prematurely. I think that's how phrases from one song end up sounding just like riffs from another song. BTW, I just found my long lost Band In A Box software package, so once I learn how to use it, I should be able to make MIDIs of any songs for which I know the tune. It will be glad to be able to post MIDIs when someone asks for a tune I know. Until now, I couldn't do that. Genie |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: What's The Use of Wings? From: JudeL Date: 10 Mar 02 - 04:20 PM I don't mean to be picky but it's hardly surprising that Brian writes songs that "stand well with only a voice to sing them" since Artisan the only instruments used in their performances are their voices |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: What's The Use of Wings? From: Genie Date: 10 Mar 02 - 08:38 PM Murrey and Jude, To me, that's a mark of a really good song, as opposed to a good "musical performance or composition--the tune can stand on its own, as opposed to needing complex instrumental background or even, for that matter, a superlative voice to sing it. Too many "songs" today don't sound good if you take away the 7-piece band and back up singers behind them or if sung by the average singer. If Brian's songs can be done a capella and sound great, that's a real tribute to his skill as a songwriter. Genie |
